Actually it is a Hancock, it has the Hancock Inspirator Company insignia on the base. Also, the base itself is a signature Hancock design namely the handle, fulcrum and valve. This is a much older design before the advent of the "archless" bell. The LV may have used them profusely on their passenger locomotives, however it is still a Hancock design.
Actually you are right. I just looked at the whistle and never knew it was a Hancock. I thought a Hancock was one type of whistle. I didn't know Hancock was a maker of whistles. Sorry 'bout that. Fact is, it sounds beautiful.
Awesome, that's what I call a Christmas present. I think the IC steamboat is a little out of place on 98, though....it sounds good, but it's a little "big" for an American.
Well first of all, it is NOT an IC steamboat whistle. Steamboat whistle is what I hate it to be called. It is though a Lehigh Valley passenger whistle, and it kind of fits 98. But when you hear it, you expect a Big boy to come around the corner.
@CSX6000 Not only that. They need to fix the track and they don't have the money, So they go slow not to damage the track. plus the trains are over 100 now. They don't want to take any risks.
they go 10-15 miles per hour and there equipment is very valuable those cars are hard to find and 98 is the only 4-4-0 in service on the east coast...
Well don't forget, the equipment is 100 years old and we want to preserve it. There is no use beating it because it sounds nice working hard. Also, we don't have the facilities to maintain our equipment like Steamtown or Strasburg. Our goal is to make the equipment last for many years to come so young kids in the future can enjoy it like we do now.
First to view, rate, comment, and favorite! This video was awesome and well put together. There's nothing like watching the fireman shovel coal into the firebox. The outside scenes you got were just stunning too.
PLS can anyone tell me where can i ride steam engine near Rochester NY?

I don't know why but that whistle makes me think it should go on strasburg's 475

Wow that is a nice video. The W&W do have some nice equipment and for some reason the railroad reminds me of Strasburg.

Lehigh Valley 3-chime passenger. It is similar to a Hancock though.

From what I was told, #98 wore a whistle like that when she was down south. Those deeper whistles were common in the Southern states.

My thoughts exactly! Wouldn't it be nice if someone restored a Big Boy? Sure UP's challenger is nice, but it is not the Big Boy!

Wow, from my count, that was 13 scoops. No wonder the safties are lifting at the beginning!

I could be wrong, but the whistle in this video sounds to me like a 12 inch Crosby 3-chime. Is it?
If so, the whistle that the #98 normally wears is probably an 8 inch Crosby 3-chime.
ReadingRRT12102 3 years ago
No. It was labeled in the video as a Lehigh Valley 3 Chime, which is what it is.
CSX6000 3 years ago
And her normal whistle is a 3 chime whistle that came off of a factory in Wilmington.
CSX6000 3 years ago
Actually, no one is sure about the name of the factory or what city it was in that the whistle came off of.
