As to the the first question posited: Teaching should be a profession, but it has been relegated to the status of "job" in contemporary America. As a former public school teacher in the inner-city, I can say with untrammeled honesty that public education in the U.S. has more to do with posturing and bureacracy than making the world a better place or serving the needs of kids. If you're thinking of becoming a teacher, please do yourself a big favor and reconsider.
