I watched this program out of interest tonight, I was amazed to find out that Scientology had been written by a guy who use to write Sci-Fi ... It's an insult to one's own intelligence to argue this 'religion' is anything more that a money making racket set up by Mr Hubbard. How does one get the title 'Religion'?. There's no test or interview. No investigation, you just have to get enough people during a census to fill in 'Scientology' on the 'Religion' section of the form. You get enough people to write 'Jedi' , it can be called 'a religion too.

Does the UNCNR then check the censuses of every country in the world and count how many people have filled in the form with that new religion? And then if that number is over, lets say 1 million people, then they write an official declaration saying that X is now a religion? I'm genuinely interested, whats the process?

However if you are going to be legally recognised as a religious organisation (like Scientology) then yes that's exactly what you have to do. Don't be such a twat if you don't actually know. You would fill in IRS Form 1023 in which you would have to detail the nature and activities of your organisation. Internationally recognised religions are predominantly organised, if you want to be taken seriously as a religion you would likely have to do the same.

In the UK the same aspects of the law apply but in the UK a religion is usually considered official if it achieves independent status on The Office for National Statistics Census. Of course this is not really "official" as that doesn't even mean anything. However a new religion on that list will recieve media attention e.g. Jedis in 2001. You have to reach approx. 800,000 members to be listed independently in the census.

@curzmg What does filling out an application for tax exemption based on being a non-profit organisation have to do with the census forms we're talking about? Does the US IRS then collate the world's census forms and count the number of people declaring that they follow the new religion? Then, if form 1023 is filled in correctly and there is a large enough return in the world's census forms the American IRS declares the new religion valid? I'm genuinely interested in what you are trying to say.

I didn't just pull the figure out of my arse it was just the lowest religion I could find catalogued in The Office of National Statistics' 2001 census. You are seemingly the proof of your own maxim. My point is that Scientology is nothing more than a money making organisation that parades itself as Religion. First, I'm allowed a grammatical error once in a while. The capital M was a typo and I lost a comma. The full line was "the aggression I use in addition to my arguments, but you have no ground" My superior linguistic skills would've allowed me to aniticpate this response before I allowed the comment to be responded to.
