doesnt it also depend on what chord you play over the melody? sorry im new to this and thats what i heard. Like if i was to play on my guitar -C, D , E, F - but im playing a D minor chord over it, i would be in D dorian??
@maddkat420 w= whole step h=half step, a major scale is 2 whole steps and then a half step, a separating whole step, and then another 2 whole steps and then a half step.
I feel retarded, I have been confused about what modes were for forever, this is really simple i already kknew this just didn't know the explanation behind it......I'm dumb hahaha.
1BIG QUESTION does the scale ever change? cuz all i am doing here is starting from diferent points. like playing mixolydian in C scale do i have to add the Bflat? (Bb)
if im soloing, and i want to play d dorian im not thinking c major (even tho all the notes in d dorian are also in c major) im thinking d dorian, becuz say someone plays a d chord, to get a dorian feel, i DONT play E dorian, i play simply D dorian
and u dont play d dorian over c (to get the dorian sound) cuz then it is just diatonic,
you play d dorian, over a D minor chord, which is not diatonic to that chord, but u get the dorian flavor
Im confused.. I am trying to figure out other modes in different keys but Im not sure if I am doing it right. In the key of E it has 4 sharps,F#,G#,C#,D#. If I wanted to do the Lydian scale for the key of E,would I play the note,A, with the 4 Sharps from the key of E?
Yup. A Lydian is basically the key of E starting on scale degree 4 (A). This is the same for all keys, any of the modes will have the exact same key signature as the ionian mode. I.E in the key of E, E ionian, F# Dorian, G# Phrygian, A Lydian, B Mixolydian, C# Aeolian, and D# Locrian will all have the exact same key. Exact same accidental and natural notes.
It's easy to understand, allthough what about the key of C it has no flats or sharps but still it changes, I kinda know why because of the half steps and whole but I don't rly get it enough to play with..
Guitar, but I understand now. I was learning some theory about this modes and they all started from C so I thought ok these are the modes. But I misunderstood something vital. It was C ionian but also C dorian etc, while i was thinking it was D dorian. So you know I understand :D
thank you so much for these videos. ive always stayed clear of modes because i thought they were too complex, but once you see past the strange names theyre fairly simple. great lesson 5*
Do a search for modes on my website. I have a listing of examples of genre's. An example of A Mixolydian mode is Blues. An example of Aoelian mode is minor scale. An example of Phyrian is spanish i bii iii progression.
for instance, when they say, play Dorian mode in key of C major... so i would then start with the 2nd note which is D since the next note from C is D?
and if they said play, phrygian mode in key of C it would be 3rd note which is E?
ok im having trouble!!! how do you know when you're playing a mode of a scale if the all have the same note in them..what gives them their unique sound?....
This is great man thanks. I'm still a little confused though. I mean when a guitarist solos using modes, does he/she really have to end on the same note they start on? And do you really have to run through the notes one by one? Or can you jump around and like make riffs with the modes as long as you start and end on the first note?
no - they don't :) you don't have to play the notes in order either - mix it up! That's what gives it substance. Just stay within the notes of the mode though and you'll be fine. No solo plays the notes ONLY in order. You learn the modes that way so its easier to remember :)
I like to think of your major scale in the form of numbers, 1-7 repeated. So you have your normal scale 12345671 which is your Ionian. Dorian 23456712, remembering that 1 is the root or key.
Phrygian 34567123. Lydian 45671234. Mixolydian 56712345. Aolian 67123456. Locrian 71234567. And back to Ionian 12345671. I hope you don't mind that I wrote this Walt, love all that you do for us. Thanx man, keep awesome dude.
Omg, I am so glad I watched your videos, I've been struggling to get this concept for a while and I thought it was a lot more complicated. You're a really good teacher!
so what if u want to play an E Ionian how do u change the notes to make it sound liek and E Ionian, i already know the notes to the C Ionian, its pretty much a major scale right? so a major E scale would be an E Ionian mode????
No, C Dorian would be a B flat major scale starting on C. If the key was B major then the Dorian would be C Sharp (because there's a whole step between the first and second scale degrees)
thanx for ur vidz.... i couldn read sheet music at all and any time i tried i got frustrated and gave up but ur vidz helped it makes sense to me now :)
Yes!!! I got it right! I answered it right! I feel so proud of myself for actually getting it! You're the greatest Walt. You make it all make sense. Thank you!
I love these videos. Every nook and cranny was looked at for these ones walt!
I'm starting to understand modes pretty well! :)
Still trying to get some things straightened out, though.
Like for example: I'm in the key of C major. So i have all the freedom in this scale if i go D dorian or E phrygian, as long as the "C to C" rule remains, yeah?
I got the concept of modes, scales and how they work, but there's things i'm still not understanding. Like that example.
I know there was something i said that might have been the wrong thing to say for the question, but i hope somebody got what i was talking about XD...
Ok, so if I can tell that if it's the Key of G and that happens to be the Lydian Mode, (respectfully) "so what?" What does that do for my playing (not trying to be rude here.....just trying to be honest in my question).
hey i cant acces ur website am sick O_O

ansionnachcliste 2 years ago
Simple acronym to remember modes:
I Don't Play Like Miles And Louie
Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian.
benchwarmer969 2 years ago
Ionian (Major)
Dorian
Phyrgian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian (Minor)
Locrian

waltribeiro 2 years ago
so... the formula of major scale is 2-2-1-2-2-2-1
so C MAJOR SCALE is C-D-E-F-G-A-B
and if we're talking about
D MAJOR SCALE it would be D-E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D
and the list goes on...
for instance, when they say, play Dorian mode in key of C major... so i would then start with the 2nd note which is D since the next note from C is D?
and if they said play, phrygian mode in key of C it would be 3rd note which is E?
did i get it right?

this doesn't work in the real world. if the rest of the band is resoluting to C, and you're resoluting to A, it's just gonna drag you back to c.

ahh ok great thanks!
one more question, this one might not even make sense but here ' goes.
how do you know when to use which modes? if a matter of preference of does it have to do with the chord progression being played in the background?
hurley1 3 years ago
both preference and chord progression. Use your ear - every mode has its own sound :)
waltribeiro 3 years ago
alright thanks man. Keep up with the lessons!

ok, Ionian is the same as major scale. just wondering is there a musical name for natural minor?
