it took bush 8 years to raise the national debt 4 trillion... it only took obama 400 days in office to raise the national debt 2 trillion. Barr 2012!!!
Our American Government will never work as it should until people like Bob are elected and put into power. How can you expect two parties to work smoothly? Obviously 3 or more parties would create a more equal government with equal representation of the people! Love ya Bob! Keep up the good work!!!
What I hate is that very little American citizens even know any of the third. We're left out of debates, the press, and it's all about the dumbass donkeys and oldass elephants. If I were old enough, I would definitely vote for Barr.
To all Libertarians and Bob Barr supporters; I have been a registered Libertarian since I was old enough to vote, and applaud everything the party stands for. But recently I've been gravitating towards a man by the name of Ron Paul. His ideals and determination have gained my trust and I fully believe in him. He has officially endorsed Constitution Party candidate Chuck Baldwin, so I implore you, bring the third parties together and cast your vote for Chuck Baldwin! Support the Revolution! ;)
Chuck baldwin is a fascist. Look up the CP platform, i don't care who gets endorsed, i care about the issues, and the constitution party wants to increase the power of the federal government.
Finally some real change, No more two party dictatorship, this is the year the Republicrat dynasty crashes down and America can enter a far better age of peace and prosperity. America doesn't have to become a police state, or have a military industrial complex economy.
I was already to go to bat for Barr, now I'm hearing he was a CIA prosicutor. I'm sorry I cant trust anyone who has ever had any affiliation with the CIA.
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Bob Barr on the steps of the Target Center in Minneapolis. I have to admit it was refreshing to be able to walk up to a presidential candidate, ask question and express my concerns. Here he was free amongst the people with out a shred of security. Bob is the only real choice the american people have, to have a president of the people and for the people.
Barr may not be a perfect libertarian, but he is head and shoulders above the two establishment parties' candidates. Anyone who flushes their vote down the toilet by choosing between the Demopublicans and Republicrats is a mindless sheep. Those two parties have been eroding our liberties for a century and a half, and brainwashing Americans into believing that they are "alternatives" to one another when they are, in fact, both working towards the same goal, domination through manipulation, of us.
yea chuck balwdin is waaay to religious to have libertarian values... we are supposed to be socially tolerant.. he is so religious and uptight he cant possibly reflect the views of the majority of all libertarians
Baldwin is a good Honest Patriotic Man, please do not thrash him, You can disagree with him on a few views and thats fine, but Main thing is he is NOT your enemy at this time, your true Threats are Mccain and Obama !
they by far are MUCH more threatening to your freedom independence and Liberty than Baldwin ever could be.
Keep the focus where it should be and DONT be distracted !
im not trashing baldwin or any constitutionalist.. but he is not a libertarian he is a const. party member and thats ok.. i think all of us with ron paul like mentality should compromise.. unite because if we did our 3rd party would be so big we could take on the 2 other parties because we are the only kind of government that can bring about real change.. not this broken system
thats true i suppose. I mean we have Baldwin, Barr, Nader, and those others who will write in Alan Keyes and Ron Paul on Ballot
so there will be ALOT of 3rd party votes this election, but it will definitely be spread out wide, but hey thats what America is all aobut, FREEDOM TO CHOOSE and vote how youd like
we cant 'dictate' to others to all get behind Barr anymore than the Nader fans can tell us same thing.
as long as you encourage as many to vote 3rd party as u can
Well it's mainly the Republican controlled Congress that let a Republican president help and I quote "get this nation off it's slippery slope of socialist interventions in the wallets and bedrooms of it's (too trusting) citizens" and gave the Republican party too much power and look at what this great nation of ours has become I'm sick of this so I am ready for change it's time to start a fresh the way Clinton came in and cleaned up the 1st Bush's mess...Obama '08
Well, working 30 years for the Republican party would make me feel the same way too, especially under Reagan and Bush...So I'm voting Democrat Obama '08! How can he be the same old same old with a background story such as his? Obama is not an elitist and never has been, he has had to work his tail off for everything he has had....d:-(D>
... and its yet to be seen if his policies are meant to make EVERYONE work their tail off for what they get (bad for poor folks on social programs) OR if his policies will penalize those that didn't have to work their tail off for it (bad for those capitalizing on our great open economy)...
Bob Barr is a FRAUD. Read any independent profile on him. He has introduced more legislation that is an infringement on liberty, than you would probably believe. WHY, in God's name did Libertarians select this man.
Did you know Barr was against the Patriot Act from the start? Have you ever read about how he knew it would pass even without his vote and he didn't want it to be permanent so he had to vote for it in order to place the sunset clauses in it so it wouldn't be permanent? The man jumped on the grenade knowing that people would criticize him down the road. Have you seen how hard he has fought to reverse the Patriot Act and how much money out of his own pocket he has spent?
I think bob barr should be president... but with that being said to many americans think they have to vote for either a democrat or republican. Its sad to say but not enough people would vote third party to even make a "dent" in the out come in november. I have voted for all parties in the past.I make my choice on the best man or woman for the job.I think for myself and not because a party told me to but to many americans don't. thanks-johndavid_200707@yahoo
Did you know he vows to repeal the Defense Of Marriage Act? Did you know that he wants to end the federal war on drugs and wants to stop policing the world? Do you know he spent thousands of his own dollars over the last half decade working for libertarian principles?
That is a contradiction to itself. The larger government grows the less civil liberties we have and the more control government has! "Consumer protectionism" is growing big government that will someday be abused again by people like Bush and Obama! I want more liberty, not some liberty. Peace!

I will NOT give Bob a chance, hes a liar and a fraud- he goes from Neo Con to Libertarian? Sorry give me a break. I am a Independent/Social Libertarian- I supported Ron paul in 08 and Supported Nader in 04, I am not back to Nader as the Libertarian Party has once again failed to yield a good candidate, Yes bob you work against the patriot act.. the act you help get passed. I Hope you fail.
That was over six years ago, man. A lot can change over that period of time. People change along with the circumstances that surround them. You're 22. What were you doing from 1995 to 2002, the period Barr was in Congress?
I went from being a libertarian before 9/11 to supporting Bush and the "war on terror" so much that I enlisted and volunteered to serve over 18 months for OEF and OIF. After finding out I was lied too and taken advantage of, I've returned to my libertarian roots.
Very important you read! Don't just vote, vote with a cause.....otherwise, stay at home and enjoy the day. It would be better than voting for one of these two war, loss of liberties, high tax candidates! Instead vote for libertarian Bob Barr and make your voice heard! Barr will be on all 50 state ballots and write-in votes are thrown away!
Agreed. I want to give this man a chance, especially after this show of contrition in this video. This sold me on trusting him once again, even though I was among those back in 2002 who worked to knock him out of office.
Barr has worked with the ACLU, the Marijuana Policy Project, worked to expose the deception of the PATRIOT Act and opposed his own "Defense of Marriage" Act (DOMA). This scores MANY points with us who were his sworn enemies back then.
Bob Barr thinks that perverted sickos who make "crush videos" that show pets being tortured to death should be legal. That's one of the reasons why he lost his next election.
SHAME on the Libertarian Party for embracing such a depraved little worm!
Give Bob a chance. A lot of people have been awaken the past few years to liberty, including myself. I voted for Bush in 2004 but as the years have passed have realized that the two-party system is broken. Who is to say Bob didn't realize the same thing.
When he dumped the republican party that's a significant change in the amount of personal gain he may be able to obtain compared to if he was a major party member.
I was torn between Mary Ruwart and Barr once I saw Barr be a bit too happy with Wayne Root, the VP candidate, who I do NOT like.
As for Baldwin, you hit it right on the money. If Baldwin gets it, then ladies, say goodbye to your right to an abortion. Lots of young girls will die in back alley abortions.
Don't think for a second that outlawing all abortion on the federal level will make it so. Learn from economics. That's what it comes down to in the end, just like the war on drugs.
Bob Barr is a distraction, designed to split the revolution.
He voted for the war and the Patriot Act, is pro abortion, changed position on the drug war, and isn't for ending the income tax... among other things.
Why do you think he's getting so much positive press coverage? Don't be fooled!
Chuck Baldwin 2008! (Because he didn't have to CHANGE to get your vote.)
haha I just copy pasted someone that got marked as spam. (rebekahj)..
Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party for President!!!
The Ron Paul rEVOLution continues!
Bob Barr, we don't believe you! You're an ex-CIA agent who voted FOR the Patriot Act and you support the War on Drugs...you're no libertarian! You people should really check out Chuck Baldwin and see what you think!
lol, yea. bob barr even sounds like he's full of shit. i'm definitely voting for Baldwin who not only endorsed Ron Paul but also campaigned for him! Baldwin is like a clone of Ron Paul. however, i guess as long as we vote 3rd Party that's all that matters. a 3rd Party isnt going to win the election but it's important that we send Washington DC a message by voting 3rd Party. everybody should at least check Baldwin out.
i actually just decided im voting Bob Barr of the Libertarian Party instead after reading an article Baldwin wrote entitled "Christian Right Just Doesn't Get It." In the 2nd paragraph he says, "We are pro-life; we stand for marriage as God defined it, we believe children should have the right to pray in school." He's too much of a theocrat for me. Im pro-choice and I support ALL individual rights including gays. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE! I guess I'm more libertarian than conservative.
it's not even that big of a deal since neither Barr nor Baldwin will actually win the election. i'm voting for Barr mostly just to show that i support the Libertarian Party's platform, not so much it's choice of candidate. but yeah, the Constitution Party is way too theocratic for me. and i'm having a hard time understanding how you can feel such a strong need to include Christianity in your platfrom, and honor Freedom of Religion at the same time...and this is coming from a Christian!
An apology doesn't change the fact that his voting record looks nothing like a Libertarian candidate's should. If you're a libertarian, vote Paul in 2012.
Bob Barr is a distraction, designed to split the revolution.

I don't trust him, he's an awful speaker, terrible voting record and can't hold a candle to Mary Ruwart or Ron Paul. Too bad he just sounds like he's spouting rhetoric. "Don't cast me aside because I'm a latecomer." Uh-huh. Whatever.
The IRS only collects money for the banks the government takes loans from. Elimination of the IRS & the Federal reserve will get rid of insane interest rates & put the power of coining Money back in the hands of the government where it belongs. Our debts could be settled for pennies for what it could be now if we continued down this path. A dollar worth a dollar can settle a debt on a dollar worth 4 cents @ 40 to 1. Imagine settling Your debts at 40 to 1.
Well public schools are the responsibility of the states and local communities, and are usually paid through property tax. Social Security should be phased out, and the same goes for other federal government welfare programs. If the federal government operated within the bounds of the constitution then it could be funded by a 5% tariff on imported goods, and through the sale of federal lands. The Sierra Club et al can raise funds to buy Yellowstone if they care so much about the environment.
Dosn't this Bob Barr fellow lead the charge against Marijuana and the war on drugs? as well as other "wasteful" government programs? Thats not part of the LP's platform is it?
He did, but he admits that he was wrong to support the War on Drugs. He's worked with the Marijuana Policy Project and says that the issue should be left to the states; maybe not enough for some Libertarians, but you won't get rid of drug prohibition until you return the issue to the states where it belongs.
Well he has changed positions, but he's evolved over a length of time. So I wouldn't put his flipflopping in the same camp as Romneys or Kerry's. But as a matter of strategy I'm inclined to believe the " I was a Republican, I did believe in the drug war, I did believe in our current foreign policy, I did believe in the Patriot Act but after careful consideration I've realized the error of my ways" might persuade folks to vote Libertarian. Sort of a Saul-Paul move, but it will piss off purists.
Well as a Liberal democrat I say good luck. I hope the LP becomes a legitimate major party and we move past the two party system that has so divided our nation along party lines. That being said, Vote Obama 08
lol, nice try. Maybe if I agreed with him on foreign policy or domestic policy I'd vote for Obama. But I don't, so I won't. But yeah opening up the system a bit would be nice.
I do not trust you Mr. Barr if you were part of the C.I.A. and have a CRAPY voting record then no one should trust you! We needed MARY RUWART or RON PAUL! I hope that you don't run next year and I pray that you are not the next president!
That's exactly my hope. We sent Ron Paul to destroy the neocons who have hijacked the GOP. Then we offer Barr for all the Republicans who woke up when they heard Ron Paul speak in debates.
I do not trust you Mr. Barr if you were part of the C.I.A. and have a CRAPY voting record then no one should trust you! We needed MARY RUWART or RON PAUL! I hope that you don't run next year and I pray that you are not the next president!
Dude, Paul was a way better candidate. Here's whats up I'm gonna vote for Obama, just for the slight chance that something might change to make lives in America better. It sucks, but at least I can say it does without getting killed.
Is change or change for the better more important. Ron Paul supported free markets and liberty. Obama supports socialism and a totalitarian central government. I'm not trying to insult you im hopping you will look into the issues more or not vote at all.
Chuck Baldwin campaigned for Ron Paul in early primary states. We need to build an infrastructure around Chuck Baldwin incase Ron Paul doesn't get the nomination. Bob Barr is out of the question.
The Patriot Act has its pros and cons. When many people voted for the Patriot Act they were lied to by the Republicans. Barr explains how it has failed on the Glenn Beck program.
When I first heard about Barr I honestly thought it was a joke. His votes in congress as a republocrat clearly show his anti-liberty message. Anyone can change though, so I kept listening for two words. I heard the words in this speech, and thus support Barr now. (The words were, "I apologize.")
Er, I have to say that I'm too afraid that Obama will get elected to not vote for McCain. Look, I know that McCain is way to the left, but if Obama gets elected...
Barr will be on the ballot in 50 states in November. Paul will be on zero. We need to continue the libertarian revolution that Ron Paul's campaign started.... bobbarr2008(dot)com. Donate today.
Killing unborn babies is choice?? Saying that America has no right to be in illegal, immoral wars is anti-American? I don't suck up to Paul, but even he is right on some issues.
DONT READ THIS! In 1997 a girl called lauren was walikng in a forest and then a she just dissapeared no one ever found her untill 2000 when a yoing girl called Mary found her body and markings on her chest saying: I wasnt pretty enough" and now you have read this she will appear in your mirror saying your not pretty enough and kill you. by the way the girl called mary died shortly after. To be saved paste this to 5 other videos. THIS TRUE
I like Paul and other's morals and voting record a lot better. But this guy sadly has something Paul didn't. Charisma. A lot of it. The fact that he secured the nomination with all that baggage is proof.
I don't know rather that is a good or a bad thing. I liked Obama at first, until I started looking at his record. They weakened the patriot act sure, but those yes votes HORRIFY me. I am sick of smooth talkers, but at the same time, the people seem to only be wooed by smooth talkers.
According to the Barr08 campaign, they have polled into even 7%!! 7% that would beat the Socialist Party (back in the early 1900s) by 1%. Independents don't count
He's not a libertarian. Why would they nominate these dumbass? He has supported the Iraq War, the Patriot Act and the "war on drugs." How did he change his mind so quickly? Fuck him.
A true libertarian is Ron Paul. It's a damn shame he's not the nominee.
I'm not nearly excited about Barr as I am about Ron Paul, but so many other libertarians are completely over-reacting about him. He's had a change of heart and if he is disingenuous, then chase him out of town again like libertarians did before. The LP has this crazy "treehouse" mentality where every debate degrades to whose more libertarian, when anyone should be encouraged to join the LP that is 1) for political decentralization and 2) against war.
Bob Barr used to hold some regrettable statist positions and has CHANGED over the past few years into a pro-liberty LEADER. Isn't that the goal of libertarian activism, to change people from statists to freedom lovers?
The anti-Barr folks are purposely portraying him as if he still held these positions (MM, Patriot Act).
Seriously, take off the MR. SPOCK EARS and join the rest of us in the real world.
oh so he was "regretably" statist for over 10 years and now in 2 years has totally reversed his entire philosophy and can see so clearly that the patriot act was a mistake.. i dont buy it that quickly. like i said, if he really holds any slightly libertarian ideals he wouldve voted "no" on the patriot act without even thinking about it. you really want me believe he just suddenly saw the light? i think you're the one in fantasy land.
So the Libertarian party now has a presidential candidate who is:
- (ex?) drug warrior
- (ex?) Patriot act supporter
- (ex?) Iraq war supporter
- Was anti-endorsed by the libertarians in 2002.
What can he do to round off this great libertarian record?
Is it just me or does it seem like there is some kind of conspiracy this year to make each party pick the absolute worst (and most likely to lose) candidate they could reasonably find...
He seems like a neocon trying to impersonate a constitutionalist. Apparently he worked in the upper echelon of the DRUG WAR for many years. What kind of libertarian does that?
barr is certainly saying all the right things, but i just don't trust him enough to give him my vote. what do his past decisions say about his future ones? the patriot act was NOT a tough decision for "libertarian" to make, should've been one of the easiest votes of his career if he really believes his rhetoric
Barr is running as a Libertarian, but his campaign platform is more conservative than libertarian. I hope he evolves in a more libertarian direction -- and fast. He doesn't want to end the war on drugs. He won't reject the Fed or talk about the need for sound money, like Ron Paul. He wants to replace the income tax with another tax. He is not as non-interventionist as I would like. He is not a good messenger for the Libertarian message. Barr wil only confuse people about libertarianism.
He does mention the Fed and the damage it's done in a video of his about the economy and his foreign policy, while not as good as Paul's, is still better than Obama's or Clinton's or Root's. Hopefully he'll be pushed to fully reject the federal war on drugs, but yeah; supporting medical marijuana isn't enough for me.
murphycline -- Thanks for pointing that out. It gives me a bit of hope about Barr. I would still llike to see a solid policy statement on Barr's web site, though.
Of the candidates who will be on the ballot Barr is the best looking one, but I might still write in Paul; the LP should have picked Kubby as VP instead of Root. Barr and Root as the candidates make the LP look as though it's just the resthome for disgruntled Republicans, which it's not.
I agree about Kubby for VP. I wanted a Ruwart/Kubby ticket. I have not yet decided whether to vote for Barr or write in Ron Paul. It depends on how libertarian the Barr campaign is between now and election day. So far, I'm not impressed. But I agree, he is better than Obama/Clinton or McCain. I also agree about how the Barr campaign is misrepresenting the LP.
Bob Barr is a welcome alternative to the Democratic and Republican candidates. He will bring the Constitution into the national debate during the campaign. His positions on the issues will bring America peace, prosperity and liberty.
umm, have you looked at his record? he voted for the iraq war. he voted for the patriot act. he voted for doma. he voted for just about everything that would be considered trampling on our civil liberties. let's hope this man had an epiphany.
Obama has come a long, long way based on the fact that he knows how to deliver a passionate speech. Now we can see that Barr also knows how to deliver a passionate speech.
Barr may not be a perfect Libertarian, but he's the best shot at getting some mainstream/significant votes.
My definition of insanity: a political party that puts the same candidate up over and over again and expects a different result.
It's time for Libertarians to take a new tack. Barr is it.
It takes courage for a person to publicly admit he was wrong, and promise to undo his error. Former Congressman Barr has had an epiphany and realized liberty, not big government, is the solution. He is the best chance the freedom movement has to redefine the presidential debate in this election.
It's one thing for life-long libertarians to say what they have known all along, it's quite another for a recovering neo-conservative to cross over to the cause of liberty and seek to make amends.
It's time for all of the old timers in the Libertarian Party to welcome newcomers like Bob Barr.
The LP needs to grow in order to win public offices, change the laws, smash the state, restore our liberty and set up safeguards to prevent the regrowth of government.
When people are ready to join us, recant their support of statism and work for LIBERTY, we must all be ready to overlook their past histories.
So the Libertarian party was suckered into accepting Barr. The just goes to show the substance of the party itself and the supposed respect for "purist ideals." Not like Barr would ever win the presidency (that has already been decided), but I don't really see how he is the "Next Ron Paul" or even how he could get the word out like Mike Gravel. I cannot stand by that man knowing what he stands for (even though he acts like a typical turncoat about those issues). Nader is the last hope.

Libertarianism has a false sense of liberty rooted in moral relativism. Their concept of liberty and limited government is really "license" to do whatever you want "as long as it doesn't hurt anyone". Their is a higher power and authority than the self. And you can arrive at that conclusion through reason if you "think".
It must just feel horrible to be so disconnected from any real sense of self importance and self worth that you need to cut other people down with such abstract attacks, rather than engaging in constructive self defining actions.
If working for the collective, for abstract notions of 'higher power' is so unfulfilling, switch sides and work to create a true self identity. Reject that you are a meaningless slave to the collective - that is your suffering.
Baldwin is a moralist. He is no libertarian. Barr, on the other hand, admitted the error of his ways and has delivered on his promise to repeal his own horrendous legislation of the past.
Tell me, Mr. Christian moralists, where's your forgiveness?
Do not underestimate the cleverness of the good doctor. November is a ways off and both Barr and Paul can build a strong contigent if they ever come together-and the country continues to falter. No wonder Barr changed partys, and others will certainly follow.
Ron Paul had it right all along, Bob Barr has made a 180 degree change in the past couple years. I don't know if Paul will endorse anyone. He wishes to position himself as a loyal Republican, but can't back McCain. Barring a surprise Run by RP, Barr is the best we have. I never heard of Chuck Baldwin, and most Americans never will hear about him from the MSM.
Having a candidate who can attract mainstream news is NOT always the solution. We can't stray from true libertarian principles just to get a "mainstream" candidate. I don't like seeing a new convert to the LP at the front like Bob Barr is already. He must prove himself first. He's spent 25 years as a NEOCON, and 2 years as a Libertarian.
I don't think Ron Paul would endorse anyone. Both of his friends, Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin are the nominees of their respective parties. I don't think he wants to play favorites with either of them.
you can bet he wont get Ron Paul's endorsement if he's for this war thats destroying our economy and killing America's and others for power and profit.
I'm a Ron Paul supporter 100 percent and the war in Iraq is my main concern and the economy how does he stand on these issues? for or against the illegal war of aggression? if he's not against this dam war he's not worth my time or vote.
Jerry, it is your responsibility to learn what libertarianism is. That's why he's in the Libertarian Party. It's not just a label. It's a philosophy.
But I'll give you this one for free. He's very much against the war.
But I repeat, you have an obligation to learn libertarian philosophy if you're going to make statements like that. It only shows you haven't done you research.
I've heard him say more than once that he wants to stop using the feds to interfere with medical marijuana in states that have legalized it. I believe he went a good deal further than that in the debate last night, but I can't remember exactly what his words were. I will say, though, that when he got done saying it, the audience seemed pretty pleased.
If Bob Barr is a libertarian, then he's converted to libertarianism. Because when he was in the House, he was a big ally of the Far Right.

im not trashing baldwin or any constitutionalist.. but he is not a libertarian he is a const. party member and thats ok.. i think all of us with ron paul like mentality should compromise.. unite because if we did our 3rd party would be so big we could take on the 2 other parties because we are the only kind of government that can bring about real change.. not this broken system
texanpilot23 3 years ago
thats true i suppose.

Well, working 30 years for the Republican party would make me feel the same way too, especially under Reagan and Bush...So I'm voting Democrat Obama '08! havocprodigy 3 years ago
... and its yet to be seen if his policies are meant to make EVERYONE work their tail off for what they get (bad for poor folks on social programs) OR if his policies will penalize those that didn't have to work their tail off for it (bad for those capitalizing on our great open economy)...

That was over six years ago, man. A lot can change over that period of time. People change along with the circumstances that surround them. You're 22. What were you doing from 1995 to 2002, the period Barr was in Congress?
I went from being a libertarian before 9/11 to supporting Bush and the "war on terror" so much that I enlisted and volunteered to serve over 18 months for OEF and OIF. After finding out I was lied too and taken advantage of, I've returned to my libertarian roots.

We converted him. Now let him perform!

Don't think for a second that outlawing all abortion on the federal level will make it so. Learn from economics. That's what it comes down to in the end, just like the war on drugs.

In the 2nd paragraph he says, "We are pro-life; we stand for marriage as God defined it, we believe children should have the right to pray in school." He's too much of a theocrat for me. So the LP wants to disolve the IRS.
How do we pay for:
Public Schools, Social Security, Disability, THE ARMED SERVICES? What are we supposed to think the free market will take care of us?
LibLeft 3 years ago
The IRS only collects money for the banks the government takes loans from. Elimination of the IRS & the Federal reserve will get rid of insane interest rates & put the power of coining Money back in the hands of the government where it belongs. Our debts could be settled for pennies for what it could be now if we continued down this path. A dollar worth a dollar can settle a debt on a dollar worth 4 cents @ 40 to 1. Imagine settling Your debts at 40 to 1.
wingnut4427 3 years ago 2
Well public schools are the responsibility of the states and local communities, and are usually paid through property tax. Social Security should be phased out, and the same goes for other federal government welfare programs. If the federal government operated within the bounds of the constitution then it could be funded by a 5% tariff on imported goods, and through the sale of federal lands. The Sierra Club et al can raise funds to buy Yellowstone if they care so much about the environment.

This is a chance for your party to actually matter and win some races. So why have a Republican flip floper as your standard bearer?
LibLeft 3 years ago 2
Well he has changed positions, but he's evolved over a length of time. So I wouldn't put his flipflopping in the same camp as Romneys or Kerry's. But as a matter of strategy I'm inclined to believe the " I was a Republican, I did believe in the drug war, I did believe in our current foreign policy, I did believe in the Patriot Act but after careful consideration I've realized the error of my ways" might persuade folks to vote Libertarian. Sort of a Saul-Paul move, but it will piss off purists.

JumpinJesuits 3 years ago 3
Bob Barr used to hold some regrettable statist positions and has CHANGED over the past few years into a pro-liberty LEADER. Isn't that the goal of libertarian activism, to change people from statists to freedom lovers?

So the Libertarian party now has a presidential candidate who is:

- Was anti-endorsed by the libertarians in 2002.
What can he do to round off this great libertarian record?

barr is certainly saying all the right things, but i just don't trust him enough to give him my vote. what do his past decisions say about his future ones? the patriot act was NOT a tough decision for "libertarian" to make, should've been one of the easiest votes of his career if he really believes his rhetoric
rapsody 3 years ago 4
Barr is running as a Libertarian, but his campaign platform is more conservative than libertarian. I hope he evolves in a more libertarian direction -- and fast. He doesn't want to end the war on drugs. He won't reject the Fed or talk about the need for sound money, like Ron Paul. He wants to replace the income tax with another tax. He is not as non-interventionist as I would like. He is not a good messenger for the Libertarian message. Barr wil only confuse people about libertarianism.
peterscottfrost 3 years ago 4
He does mention the Fed and the damage it's done in a video of his about the economy and his foreign policy, while not as good as Paul's, is still better than Obama's or Clinton's or Root's. Hopefully he'll be pushed to fully reject the federal war on drugs, but yeah; supporting medical marijuana isn't enough for me.
murphycline 3 years ago 3
murphycline -- Thanks for pointing that out. It gives me a bit of hope about Barr. I would still llike to see a solid policy statement on Barr's web site, though.
peterscottfrost 3 years ago
Of the candidates who will be on the ballot Barr is the best looking one, but I might still write in Paul; the LP should have picked Kubby as VP instead of Root. Barr and Root as the candidates make the LP look as though it's just the resthome for disgruntled Republicans, which it's not.
murphycline 3 years ago
I agree about Kubby for VP. I wanted a Ruwart/Kubby ticket. I have not yet decided whether to vote for Barr or write in Ron Paul. It depends on how libertarian the Barr campaign is between now and election day. So far, I'm not impressed. But I agree, he is better than Obama/Clinton or McCain. I also agree about how the Barr campaign is misrepresenting the LP.

nadoop 3 years ago 2
Obama has come a long, long way based on the fact that he knows how to deliver a passionate speech. Now we can see that Barr also knows how to deliver a passionate speech.
Barr may not be a perfect Libertarian, but he's the best shot at getting some mainstream/significant votes.
My definition of insanity: a political party that puts the same candidate up over and over again and expects a different result.
It's time for Libertarians to take a new tack. Barr is it.
scwallac 3 years ago
It takes courage for a person to publicly admit he was wrong, and promise to undo his error. Former Congressman Barr has had an epiphany and realized liberty, not big government, is the solution. He is the best chance the freedom movement has to redefine the presidential debate in this election.
It's one thing for life-long libertarians to say what they have known all along, it's quite another for a recovering neo-conservative to cross over to the cause of liberty and seek to make amends.
scotaboman 3 years ago
What a great, inspirational speaker.

Not like Barr would ever win the presidency (that has already been decided), but I don't really see how he is the "Next Ron Paul" or even how he could get the word out like Mike Gravel.

And you can arrive at that conclusion through reason if you "think".
jbryant13 3 years ago

Oh, that's right--you're MORALISTS.

Do not underestimate the cleverness of the good doctor. November is a ways off and both Barr and Paul can build a strong contigent if they ever come together-and the country continues to falter. No wonder Barr changed partys, and others will certainly follow.

If Ron Paul endorses anyone for president, I believe it will be Chuck Baldwin.

Baldwin opposes some civil liberties.

I got a choice now.
Thank you Mr. Barr for running.

I don't think Ron Paul would endorse anyone. Both of his friends, Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin are the nominees of their respective parties. I don't think he wants to play favorites with either of them.

It would also give his opponent for Congress, Chirs Peden, more material to attack.

you can bet he wont get Ron Paul's endorsement if he's for this war thats destroying our economy and killing America's and others for power and profit.

It only shows you haven't done you research.

some people just want to be a smart ass dont they?

I've heard him say more than once that he wants to stop using the feds to interfere with medical marijuana in states that have legalized it. I believe he went a good deal further than that in the debate last night, but I can't remember exactly what his words were. I will say, though, that when he got done saying it, the audience seemed pretty pleased.

that sounds good, thanks, now i hope ron paul endorses him after the republican convention
