To my ears Fritz is the greatest singer ever to have lived - because he had the musicianship, intelligence and heart to match his supremely gorgeous voice. That he could sing everything from Bach to Verdi with equal integrity is a miracle. His daughter Barbara said he knew he would die young and survived several close shaves, e.g. when his car ended up on a railway line in fog with a train coming .... all very strange, as though he was destined for a quick return to heaven one way or another.
According to a recent Arte documentary in which Fritz's fatal accident was described by friends who were with him that evening and by his wife, to whom he had just spoken on the phone, Fritz died by stepping on his untied bootlaces as he went down a flight of stairs on his way to his bedroom. The rope handrail came out of the wall and he fell headfirst down the stairs and fractured his skull. He was not drunk. The documentary is now on YouTube (many thanks to the person who posted it).
This performance was in Bamberg, northern Bavaria 12 September 1966. He suffered his fatal accident just 5 days later. What a beautiful song. What a wonderful rendition of it to say goodbye with.
He was actually drunk, which is no crime, because he hab been celebrating with friends in a huntung lodge, which also is no crime. Then, in the middle of the night, when he got up to take a leak, which is only human, he stumbled down the stairs an broke his neck. He was the greatest tenor who ever lived and he would have been even greater, if he had not died. We can only mourn his untimely death and honer his beautiful voice. Thank you Fritz!
In addition to the beauty of his voice, the element that I find to be most interesting is that I am at ease listening to him sing. I am not startled by unexpected and possibly uncomfortable passages.
Gosh....I don't know what happened here, I haven't looked at this clip in a while. Thank you for pointing that out, I will try to correct it or remove the video.
wow...I'm speachless...I don't think I've ever heard such beautiful tenor voice...I've never been so moved..really i was enchanted when I first heard him...wow...wow...wow...

What a voice. When you think he was only 35 when he died. I agree with pavy456.
