Is tabla just an Indian name for "drum"? There are many kinds of hand drums and there are many different names for them. The Indian tabla has a very unique and distinctive sound, much fuller than what this drummer is playing, also it requires a certain technique to get that bouncy ba-WOOMP! so how can you call this a tabla? As for the lovely dancer, she looks at least 40ish and is in fantastic physical shape and very agile. I've never seen Didem shake like that. BUT... Sadie is incomparable.

@49kasey I just studied this in my world music class. The Tabla here is different from the Indian Tabla (pronounced differently, too). The tabla used in belly dance and other Arabic/Egyptian music is an hourglass-shaped ceramic drum that produces two distinct sounds, a low "dum" and a high "tek."

they dont "match" the dance moves and the pace, the tabla player reads her movements and follows her with the pace, its like a dialogue between them, he follows the dancer, not the other way around

yea tabla is indian look it up and darbuka is from arabia im indian like how they use the tabla in bellydance we use the darbuka to or vise versa i tried to play these things my dad showed me its mad hard it takes talent so i commerate anyone that knows how to play it hopefully i get good as my dad one day lol he knows how to play everything and still works as a doctor lol i commerate him!! great job on the bellydancing tabla is great for that diffrent beats at various paces!

@dandan9979 the darbuka and the tabla, arent the same! first of all tablas are 2 drums, and darbuka it´s only one!, the geometry of darbuka is very different to the tablas!, you can see them searching in google, and the instrument played in the video is a darbuka

There are a variety percussion instruments in this "so called" Middle Eastern bellydancing, but none of them are the tabla.
