  • Calif. voters just defeated some propositions that were supposed to come up with some quick money, so now the state is going to run out of cash in 6 weeks because of a $30 billion deficit. Huge education cuts are coming. I don't have kids so I don't care. The "kids are our future" cliche is getting tired. If kids are our future, then the future is going to be like "Terminator Salvation". Anyway at this point nothing can save California. A $30 billion deficit is like the H-bomb in "Lost".

  • cute

  • I think if you take a look at the industries Arizona is known for, you'll find that a higher education doesn't translate to sustained or continued growth in those industries, so education cuts, in the mind of politicians, is actually a win because the educated wouldn't take jobs in the industries that form the core of the state economy anyway.

  • Razela, political commentator and erstwhile princess of the drumline...

    Thanks for making this point!!!!

I checked the stats, and you are so right. Arizona's per student funding for public schools ranks near the bottom.. (Motto: We still spend more than Utah...) I hope you and othres in AZ wlll contact your own state legislators. This is so vital!

And it also shows how federal economic policy failures, regardless of which party is to blame, devastate local and state taxes.

  • Here in NC, they are seeing fit to cut education as well. some local schools have had to GIVE BACK funding...how can government expect anyone to operate a budget under those circumstances?

I agree that education is one of the last places we should be cutting budgets, it's short-sighted.

  • Still gorgeous and still very intelligent. :) I vote for Razela for the next president.

  • How about we work towards the Scandinavian model of free post secondary education for all.

The policy has given those country's the best standard of living in the world.

  • Free? where money comes from to make "free" education?

  • There's no such thing as "free" education.

  • How about a 100% cuts! That's how You Amricans should resolve your economic problems. The less government the better.

Seems that your brainwashingmachine sounds even louder.

  • Excellent! That would raise the quality of their educational system to heihgts acheived by such countries as Burkina Faso and Saudi Arabia!

  • In Saudi Arabia taxes don't event exists. That's something for me. Only private education is good.

  • Saudi Arabia is a nightmarish country, despite the trillions that they have in oil money. You still have legitimate points though about private education, low taxes (you can't completely eliminate taxes) and minimal government.

  • This is just stupid. Saudi Arabia has no icome tax, but the government still gets their money. Check out the "religious tax" (25% corporate tax) and the tax on investment earnings. Tax rates can be low since the size of the Saudi GDP vs. the size of the population is so high.

    Tighten up your rhetoric.

  • It is hard to believe that there isn't some pork-barrel spending that can't be cut before education.

  • It's not like the schools are shutting down and everyone is going to get less education than they already are. While I understand your concern, I don't think that a budget cut is really going to hurt education in the long run.

To sum it up, I really don't think the amount of money you have = how awesome your education is. I myself came from a very conservative area, My school district had the tightest budget in the entire state, we also had the highest test scores.

  • Educators in the state have been told, in a variety of ways, that the districts are going to "try" to keep them all employed, but that they don't know what's coming next. Workers in the Peoria district has been told, in so many words, that if they're recent hires, their jobs are NOT guaranteed for next year. I'm sorry, but when school districts start to come up with student disbursement plans because they can't afford substitutes, something is very wrong.

  • Although I highly value education, I really question if there is a strong correlation between education and economic prosperity. By the way, I'm referring to higher education. I think that having a high school diploma is absolutely essential.

  • She's talking about serious stuff,;but, I can't help but think, "Why is she dressed like Han Solo?"

  • I was going out that night, and even though you can't tell from the little bit in the video, I assure you that the whole outfit together was way cute.

  • Han Solo, geez, wow. Well getting away from the superficial, going National. I'm kind of glad the school budgets are getting cut. Why? Because Big Government has failed students. Ever since the DOE came into existence the test scores have fallen precipitously. Change, now that would be change, get rid of the DOE.

  • Jamie, you'd look good in any ensemble.

I tried to resist the urge not to type a mundane response about your appearance, but I can't control myself. I'm sorry!

  • Will this mean no new microscopes or no new fooballs?

  • Although I do not live in the state of Arizona i went ahead and looked over the budget and revenue charts and i think the main issue is the taxation isn't used properly and the use of workers from other states is to high with your current unemployment rate.

I'm sure if Arizona would really look into there revenue side as well as the budget side the budget cuts of education wouldn't need to be as high or completely unnecessary.

  • Exactly. I thought about going into the revenue side, but then the video would have been far to long so I cut it to keep it simpler.

  • hey Jamie, did ya like the tucson verson of the superbowl?

    GO SUNDEVILS WOOOOO!

  • I have to say, I was really proud of myself for getting through this entire video without making one ASU joke. I kept thinking up good one liners but then deciding it would ruin the flow of the video.

Anyways, Tucson version of the superbowl?? I did go to the Vegas bowl.

  • What are your views on the bailouts and stimulus packages?

  • The bailouts and "stimulus" package are disasters and have dangerous implications for this country's economy. Any honest economist will tell you that.
