Love in the studio version when Frank adds those little double-bass flutters during the 2nd half of the song... what an awesome drummer and a KILLER track!!!!
@megaladon73 I love those kick drum flutters too man! Frank is truly an underrated drummer. Dig his kick drum work on Long Distance Boogie from Fandango, he keeps it bubblin like a witches cauldron for freaking ever! I'm glad someone besides me notices that kinda stuff too. Cheers N Beers!
@kingofthebrittains i notice stuff like that, but i'm a drummer. However: i did learn this song on guitar last night. GOODS TUFF. Carry on thy Bearded Sons
@kingofthebrittains i notice stuff like that, but i'm a drummer. However: i did learn this song on guitar last night. GOODS TUFF. Carry on, thy Bearded Sons
@zzfanhun I read recently on billboard that billy said new album should be out by end of the year, I really hope they get back to 70's style zz!! Been with these guys since middle 70's it's been a great ride!,no sign of slowing down. Thanx for your posts and comments man. Rock on brother! Zz forever.
@zztopyoungblood So easy for people to put on the airs of a music snob and gripe about anything a band has done since their first album, or even before. It's tired and played out.
Rhythmeen, XXX, and Mescalero are top notch and some of their best stuff ever.
And truth is, it's ALL great. BTW - if you go through the entire catalogue you will see an evolution, a progression. They don't simply "try something new". I really hope that trend continues, just as it has all along.
oh boy..i was there..age 19....now i am getting 40....but now i can play it....fuck diabolo...sold my sol......great deal...sole is gone..i play like a joung god....
@Zboots try to get the mag.. also fantastic was the drum sound of Frank`s kit and playin.. a Tama Artstar i guess which was 24 and 20 Bass, 10,12,13,14,TomTom, 16 and 18inch StandToms, and a f**** brillant 8" deep WoodSnare that blew you away of it`s crispness and precision.. i miss that time so much.. the voices and abs.precise playin´ they never did again since 1982 when they got more and more electric.. :-(
I have been there in 1980, Essen Grugahalle, TopAct of german RockpalastNight.
1st time in europe, 1st time in germany.. and they were still f*** texan Millionairesand when they arrived.. i was just 15... didn`t know a f** note of them
we all didn`t know what would come and had no idea.. and then.!!!! the show was absolutely amazing outstanding sound/performance.. one of the best 3 shows i have ever seen in my life and there were plenty of..get everything you can. abs.amazing
@Zboots yes there you go.. abs. right.. the guitar sound was so amazing and heavy that everybody was cunning how Billy did this. the secret is the modification of his amps and the DiMarzio switches.. There`s a german mag called Fachblatt Musik Magazin of 1980 where he explains the diversity of his very own dark fat sound
Man o Man, memories golore!I saw em about 4 months prior to this in Memphis for the 3rd time that decade. Don't recall em playing this but definitely 1 of my faves off Tejas! Don't Tease Me,Arrested for Driving While Blind, man I played that one out.Songs like this plus Shiek, Master of Sparks,Heaven Hell or Houston orManic Mechanic ya just can 't seem to get many "new"live versions of.....Great Post!! THANKS
Tejas had some really underrated songs, everyone knows El Diablo and Driving whil Blind but Ten Dollar Man and Enjoy and Get It On get very little mention...anyway, GOD BLESS Billy's taste for tone!
@lookingforfun70 Totally, awesome tune= It's Only Love, Asleep in the Desert,She's a Heartbreaker......as was recently stated this can and will go on forever!!
Thanks for posting this great song.In the 70's i wasnt into ZZ Topp,i was into Hendrix,Sabbath,Floyd and Judas Priest. But when i got out of the Corps in 1983 and saw their videos from the "Eliminator"album on MTV,i fell in love with their music.I remember cruising down Westheimer from Hwy 6 to Bagby in my 69 Chevelle here in Houston jamming ZZ Topp."Tejas" is my favorite album now.Take care
I met them backstage in Roanoke VA on their Afterburner Tour. I asked Billy if they ever did anything off of Tejas anymore, he said he hardly remembered that record.
The song is the story of a man called " El Diablo de Mexico". - An outlaw bandido, like those who inspired the names and logos of many motorcycle clubs in the USA.
This is my favorite ZZ Top Song from my favorite ZZ record!
I walked into a furniture store today here in LA and there was Billy!! I asked him for his autograph and he was so nice..he pulled out a pre printed card and signed and dated it for me!! So gracious....lol and wearing his fuzzy little hat!
I recorded it during the broadcast with a microphone in front of the tv set. But I'd prefer to have it in better quality. Too bad this wasn't released officially, it was a fantastic show and it ended at 6.20 in the morning.

@mootle661 I agree with You! I said a lot, that Tejas is his B.E.S.T. album.
I dont know, why is underrated(im too young to know?), but im sure that this album is a masterpiece. My favourite.
Billy"s great guitar tricks and bluesy voice, Dusty's great, soulfully voice and precise bassing, and Frank's drumming the biggest!!!! on this album!
They're my all-time icons!
