in all truth, I HATE Mario Cart Wii, and I usually like Mario cart games! I found the level designs to be poor, the items broken, the AI cheap, the physics god awful, and the characters all handled the same. Basically this game hit every single negative point for me, but my bile rose twice as high at the universal praise it always receives just because of what it is.
I really like this episode (And I like all of your episodes) because you're actually OVER-THINKING about a GAME, not just the politics. Any Ways, your TOG episodes are great, and I'm very happy that I've found an intellectual that focuses many of his arguments on games. :)
The prologue for "Sonic and the Black Knight" says that Sonic was going to a date with Amy before being summoned to another world. Both the manual and Amy use the word "date" somewhere, but Sonic never admits it, and no one says exactly what the date is. That might imply that Sonic doesn't consider where he's going a date or that he's going there against his will. However, he wouldn't be on his way to whatever it was if he didn't actually want to go.

Just a minor thing here: If you read some of the official FF7 short stories, they seem to imply the Cloud and Tifa ARE somewhat of an item after the initial game.
Cloud has never occured to me as oblivious of Tifa's affection for him, but then again when I played the game I'd always pick her instead of Aerith.
I think that mainly, even in the spin-off games and movies they want to keep it somewhat ambiguous as to which girl Cloud tryly loved, so as one can make a decision for themselves.

I never read the manual, but I have SMB2. There were actually three different kinds of Birdos. Some spit eggs, some spit fire, and some did a random mix of both. I always assumed that fire-spitters were the males of the males of the species and egg-spitters were the females. The dual-spitters were either a completely normal third gender, transgenders that were were much more common, or youths whose genders hadn't fully specialized yet.
For what it's worth, I liked the Race Bannon reference. But given that it was a reference (and an old one at that), I'm not too surprised that it was missed entirely by a great number of people.
Actually, he messed up there, Daisy didn't disappear up until Mario Party 5, she featured as a playable character in Mario Tennis on the N64, as Peach's default partner, not too mention she made an appearance in every Mario Party game except the first two and Advance.

I thought cloud and tifa had hooked up? i remember right before the ending stage there was a cut scene showing cloud and tifa holding each other in the middle of nowhere waiting for the airship to pick them up when suddenly the screen went black. since the game world wasn't ready to deal with mainstream sex scenes back then i figured it was supposed to be hinting at them hooking up (sorta like in 50s films). oh well i could be wrong since the last time i played the game was 6 years ago.
I have yet to see anyone pull that off. Who wouldn't love a woman who looks amazing and could kick your ass but won't? If she wants something she'll get it. That and she looks like someone who knows how to fuck.

Um....about Amy and Sonic, I may agree with you on an early Sonic, but I disagree now that people match up Sonic with Sally instead of Amy. I find Amy to be one of those girls who wants "a prince on a white horse", so she would follow the guy she has the biggest crush on, unlike Sally who's in love with Sonic because he's the main hero.
Oh and I too find the Luigi and Daisy relationship very sweet. Especially since Daisy is a hyperactive girl and Luigi is the nervous guy! XD
I really like these videos =D as a gamer with a soft spot for (realistic) romantic stories in games I tend to think about the relationships of the game's characters a lot. This video very articulately expressed a lot of obscured thoughts looming in the back of my mind about the Luigi/Daisy situation that I didn't even know were there. Either way I love these videos and this one in particular was great. Also obviously number 6 was amazing and my girlfriend and I have watched it several times.

Now, you'd have to be frickin' blind to not see in the KH series that Sora (main character) is infatuated w/ her. She's his light, he has visions of dancing with her, etc. However, they never actually get together in the games, for a few reasons:
1. the games are rated E, so kids are most likely going to play them. And a kid seeing kissing onscreen are most likely going to
perhaps they could make the limit adjustable (higher limit for anything that might insight debate, lower for videos for only which short simple comments would be posted)

This has to be the most embarrassing of the OverThinker vids. I can forgive the kirby one, since the games ARE fun.. But talking about videogame character relations.. You know, Cloud did get with Tifa right after the game but he left for like a week or two because he contracted geostigma and thought his inevitable slow decay as a human being as a result would be too much of a burden on Tifa and the kids. AC takes place not very long after he left and it's safe to assume he went back because he was cured, forgave himself for Aerith Zack's (because he's just as much a part of it) death's.

I never actually SAW the Super Mario Bros. Movie (Thank God.) but I saw the Nostalgia Critic Review about it, so apparently in the Movie they both have the last name Mario. But, I'm not entirely sure about the game, maybe their last names aren't Mario, like in the Game. "Bob-omb."
When Mario mania was in full swing back in the late 80's i think it was. Nintendo of America came out in an official statement saying that Mario's last name is indeed Mario. That's why Luigi and Mario are called the Mario bros.

I like the idea of an official relationship between Luigi and Daisy. It's like Ascended Fanon. Cloud sucks for being so emo. I'd jump on Tifa first chance I got. I enjoy Amy Rose as a character, I play as her first chance I get (despite the lack of a spin dash and inability to jump on enemies in Sonic Advance).
@GameJudge I think the fact that Daisy and Luigi are all but canon as a couple while we still have yet to see more than a peck on the cheek between Mario and Peach is another point towards the "They're actually related" theory. It also doesn't help that one of the kings in Mario 3 looks like he could be a third Mario brother. Perhaps he's Peach's father?
@GameJudge thats why i liked the fleetway version of amy, shes got lot more depth. and grows up a bit, so she has turned sonics dis intrest into a positive. (well in the good storys, recommend doing a hunt for the sonic the comic retrospective here on youtube)

see, This is not the first time I've hered people bitch about how amy dosen't get enough attention as the sonic love intrest. But there is actually a reason why that post is taken over by sally. BECAUSE AMY IS RELATED TO SONIC. 'nuff said. Later on, they then tryed to basically re-do amy with mina the mongoose, and he ended up with sally again. It's kinda official, sally is his girl.

On the one hand, I think most of us understand that it's just a little silly to devote more than a minutes thought to relationships and romances that happen in a video game. On the other hand, however, it really speaks about how seriously we take these games, and these characters, to really care about who ends up loving who. Not only do we take this stuff seriously, but it also shows that, deep down, we're all just hopeless romantics.

Mmm... well that's all kind of bad characterization on Cloud, the fact that he thinks of what could have been, and dwells on it instead of moving forward. He wasn't the one who impaled Zack or Aeris on a giant sword, sure he gave Sephiroth the Meteor materia but in that respect, the rest of the castare just as easy to blame.
None of them lifted a finger to save Aeris, nor did they stop him, assholes. It makes you a really bad character when you take the weight on the world on your shoulders.

Sally is canonical. Sega has tight reigns over Archie comics and anything that Archie makes is approved by Sega, therefore canon. She's the USA's Sega canon while Amy is Japan's. They just so happened to not collide well when the mess of a storyline called Sonic was shoved together. But Archie found a way to get the two into one world without it being too strange. Sally is a trademark of Sega. End of story. (And Amy has a personality about as interesting as cardboard in comparison to Sally.)
Sally was a bit of a bitch. She broke up with sonic at the end of the comic because he wanted to Chase after Robotnik and make sure he wouldn't cause more trouble for Mobius, however Sally had to be a bitch by giving that line "It's either him or me", but sonic being the Hero, chose to save the world than live happily ever after.
About the furry thing I really don't understand why you hate it. You should search up Kitsune from asian mythology. Sometimes depicted a fox-women who sleep with men

Satam is the old-school of sonic cartoons where the new sonic games and the god awful Sonic X represents to the SatAM fans what the hardcore games mean to you.
most SatAM fans, including myself, like Sally over Amy because she represents Sonic in the glory days, not to mention her role in the series is far more interesting than Amy's role in the new games. Sally is a fallen princess attempting to lead a desperate group of "freedom fighters" into a blade runner hellcity to save their homeland from a Robotnik who is actually sinister, almost satanic. All amy does is follow Sonic around and do very little.

Just a minor thing here: If you read some of the official FF7 short stories, they seem to imply the Cloud and Tifa ARE somewhat of an item after the initial game.
Cloud has never occured to me as oblivious of Tifa's affection for him, but then again when I played the game I'd always pick her instead of Aerith.
I think that mainly, even in the spin-off games and movies they want to keep it somewhat ambiguous as to which girl Cloud tryly loved, so as one can make a decision for themselves.

I never read the manual, but I have SMB2. There were actually three different kinds of Birdos. Some spit eggs, some spit fire, and some did a random mix of both. I always assumed that fire-spitters were the males of the males of the species and egg-spitters were the females. The dual-spitters were either a completely normal third gender, transgenders that were were much more common, or youths whose genders hadn't fully specialized yet.

Actually, he messed up there, Daisy didn't disappear up until Mario Party 5, she featured as a playable character in Mario Tennis on the N64, as Peach's default partner, not too mention she made an appearance in every Mario Party game except the first two and Advance.

The word "tranny" is a slur. For a lot of trans women it's the equivalent of "fag" (as well as saying a trans woman "doesn't count" as a woman). I realize that not a lot of people realize this, so I just wanted to give you a heads up.

I thought cloud and tifa had hooked up? i remember right before the ending stage there was a cut scene showing cloud and tifa holding each other in the middle of nowhere waiting for the airship to pick them up when suddenly the screen went black. since the game world wasn't ready to deal with mainstream sex scenes back then i figured it was supposed to be hinting at them hooking up (sorta like in 50s films). oh well i could be wrong since the last time i played the game was 6 years ago.

I have yet to see anyone pull that off. Who wouldn't love a woman who looks amazing and could kick your ass but won't? If she wants something she'll get it. That and she looks like someone who knows how to fuck.
Please note that I realize that she's just a game character and is pure fiction so don't even think of using that old argument. I like Aerith but I like Tifa better and wouldn't hesitate to go for her.

Um....about Amy and Sonic, I may agree with you on an early Sonic, but I disagree now that people match up Sonic with Sally instead of Amy. I find Amy to be one of those girls who wants "a prince on a white horse", so she would follow the guy she has the biggest crush on, unlike Sally who's in love with Sonic because he's the main hero.
Oh and I too find the Luigi and Daisy relationship very sweet. Especially since Daisy is a hyperactive girl and Luigi is the nervous guy! XD

I really like these videos =D as a gamer with a soft spot for (realistic) romantic stories in games I tend to think about the relationships of the game's characters a lot. This video very articulately expressed a lot of obscured thoughts looming in the back of my mind about the Luigi/Daisy situation that I didn't even know were there. Either way I love these videos and this one in particular was great. Also obviously number 6 was amazing and my girlfriend and I have watched it several times.

Actually, theres also the fact that:
KH1-Kairi's heart is inside Sora for most of the game then when the bad guy is defeated, they are seperated when the worlds are repaired.
COM-Sora gets tied up in something....sadly he won't be able to remember a damn thing about it.
358/2-He's asleep the whole time.
KH2-They finally do get back together....at the end of the game.

All I'm going to say is that Amy is a crappy character because she's no different than Sakura from Naruto Pre-Time jump. Mostly useless and her fangirl attitude is irritating.
Amy also has a pretty annoying voice, which at least Sakura lacks IMO. Overall she's a highly pointless character because if you ask me if you expect proper consistent continuity and relationships out of a series like Sonic, then you need to get a reality check.

You know, Cloud did get with Tifa right after the game but he left for like a week or two because he contracted geostigma and thought his inevitable slow decay as a human being as a result would be too much of a burden on Tifa and the kids. AC takes place not very long after he left and it's safe to assume he went back because he was cured, forgave himself for Aerith Zack's (because he's just as much a part of it) death's.
Read the "On the Way to a Smile" novellas for more. :)

When Mario mania was in full swing back in the late 80's i think it was. Nintendo of America came out in an official statement saying that Mario's last name is indeed Mario. That's why Luigi and Mario are called the Mario bros.

@GameJudge I think the fact that Daisy and Luigi are all but canon as a couple while we still have yet to see more than a peck on the cheek between Mario and Peach is another point towards the "They're actually related" theory. It also doesn't help that one of the kings in Mario 3 looks like he could be a third Mario brother. Perhaps he's Peach's father?

What an interesting topic.
On the one hand, I think most of us understand that it's just a little silly to devote more than a minutes thought to relationships and romances that happen in a video game. On the other hand, however, it really speaks about how seriously we take these games, and these characters, to really care about who ends up loving who. Not only do we take this stuff seriously, but it also shows that, deep down, we're all just hopeless romantics.

Or in Cloud's case; what he gets roped into and thinks he has to stay in because he has nothing better to do than hunt down and slaughter Sephiroth.

I think that pales in comparison to say Cecil from FF4 who's fforced against his will to kill to bring his kingdom more power, than stripped of his command, and finds that his kingdom has become totally evil.

i was more on about Zack who saved his life multiple times and then ends up getting him killed as he cant keep up with zack as he a cabbage.
Then he goes on to kill his love,end up giving Sephiroth the resources needed to conquer the world,partly responcible for Weapons coming back for same reason mentioned above that destroys more stuff.
havent played ff4 much and yes locke in 6 is quite unlucky

Mmm... well that's all kind of bad characterization on Cloud, the fact that he thinks of what could have been, and dwells on it instead of moving forward. He wasn't the one who impaled Zack or Aeris on a giant sword, sure he gave Sephiroth the Meteor materia but in that respect, the rest of the castare just as easy to blame.
None of them lifted a finger to save Aeris, nor did they stop him, assholes. It makes you a really bad character when you take the weight on the world on your shoulders.

Heh, I can't help but enjoying your take on the Luigi/Daisy relationship, I've been thinking the same since I played Mario Tennis. Would have enjoyed the character more had she not brought Waluigi with her -.-

I totally agree with the SNL comment. Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig are the ones keeping the show alive.
Either way, great video. I dislike Sally fans myself, although you probably didn't mean you hated her or anything.

Hey Overthinker, this may have been mentioned but uhh.. there's a video out there with Charles Martinet doing a test run of Animal Crossing: City Folk's Online and Mic features. In the video, while in the character of Mario he says something to Luigi generally saying "But I thought you and Daisy were an item?" to which Luigi replies that they are. You should check it out.

Sally is canonical. Sega has tight reigns over Archie comics and anything that Archie makes is approved by Sega, therefore canon. She's the USA's Sega canon while Amy is Japan's. They just so happened to not collide well when the mess of a storyline called Sonic was shoved together. But Archie found a way to get the two into one world without it being too strange. Sally is a trademark of Sega. End of story. (And Amy has a personality about as interesting as cardboard in comparison to Sally.)

Sally was a bit of a bitch. She broke up with sonic at the end of the comic because he wanted to Chase after Robotnik and make sure he wouldn't cause more trouble for Mobius, however Sally had to be a bitch by giving that line "It's either him or me", but sonic being the Hero, chose to save the world than live happily ever after.
About the furry thing I really don't understand why you hate it. You should search up Kitsune from asian mythology. Sometimes depicted a fox-women who sleep with men

great video as always bob, but I was a little puzzled by your opinion on the Sally/Amy thing considering your attitude towards the "hardcore" gamers. People like me who would prefer Sally to be included in the games are fans of the original Sonic cartoon referred to as "SatAM." Satam is the old-school of sonic cartoons where the new sonic games and the god awful Sonic X represents to the SatAM fans what the hardcore games mean to you.

most SatAM fans, including myself, like Sally over Amy because she represents Sonic in the glory days, not to mention her role in the series is far more interesting than Amy's role in the new games. Sally is a fallen princess attempting to lead a desperate group of "freedom fighters" into a blade runner hellcity to save their homeland from a Robotnik who is actually sinister, almost satanic. All amy does is follow Sonic around and do very little.
