Maybe the mythical infestation of snakes is a metaphor for the Pagan Celts? Lots of Pagan religions revere snakes is where I'm going with this. Didn't St. Patrick convert them to Christianity?
Well, the Celts were a scary lot. They liked to collect severed heads and foster out their kids. I guess Christianity refined and ultimately sterilized sacrificial rituals by replacing them with feasts, fasts, and sacraments. On the other hand they burned witches, and well the rest is well documented and not fit for air time at this time. :)
"we've lost all those typical rituals in the name of civilization..."
All civilizations have their roots in religion, even if they develop into communism with enforced atheism - and - have we really lost these rituals? For that matter, have we really even done away with ritual human sacrifice? Some would say not. o_O
Does everyone else sing along to the theme song, or am I the only one?

Please, could someone explain the 'half beer, half asphalt' joke?

Guiness beer is a pretty thick dark beer, so it's like drinking asphalt.
Hope that explained that

I thought the same, maybe they "got rid" of those who would not convert. Religion tend to be so peaceful you know :P
