It's a struggling actress voice from a working class background. In the 1930's, the live musicals were just cheap entertainment for those people with little money to spare.
She can just survive to learn the business if there's a demand for her abilities. It's very sad that people could suddenly lose their jobs.
The actors and actresses made The Great Depression bearable for many people by taking away their troubles for just a moment.

Well, no. That's not his problem. He isn't being passive, he's just the sort who thinks everyone should make their own choices and lead their own lives and adventures, even if they're dangerous. He sure does live that way himself. He doesn't use force against anyone unless he absolutely has to.
