  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • Seeing these guys on the 18 of October along with Death Cab for Cutie

  • omg they suck but i like them :) ¬_¬

  • @snorskar they suck? You're obviously a tool. Be happy that you like them, and therefore like good music, cuz if you actually think they suck, then u prolly don't listen to much good music to begin with.

  • My comments were harsh re: classic rockers, but I do not apologize. Where are the new legends? I wish I could hear more evidence of the good stuff that I remember instead of this "look-at-me" horseshit that proliferates the scene and passes for music..Or maybe that is just the rallying cry of a washed-up loser himself.There. I said it. It is all about looking oneself in the mirror every fucking morning and asking "do I like what I see"?Cheers!FrankC32

  • im from oz they get played here on triple j i just lovem to me their the best band ive heard lifter puller very close 2nd

  • fuck you quintvisk -

  • I just saw them last night in Houston, Texas and the place went absolutely "nut-shit" when they did this song. The band is pretty much sedate in this video compared to the runaway locomotive that they are live. One of the best "pure" American rock bands that I have ever seen! If you have never seen them do whatever you have to do to see them live!

  • consider yourself damn luck if you only get subpoenaed in Texas..we're crazy here

  • LOVE THIS BAND, anyone who lives in chicago's gotta hit me up, cuz we got just enough in common to be best friends forever

  • Jesus start arguing!!! This is a great rock band and alot of people miss them and dont realize how much better they are then todays sugar coated shit! Because your busy arguing over the internet about who's depressed and krap. WATCH THE VIDEO AND LOVE THE HOLD STEADY!!

sad is an irrelevant value. your confused makes you emotional makes you judge things what i say...taking care of everyone globally, genetically is my common goal... the beginning is near.... the band "tool" is one of the prophet, drugs the vehicle, understanding is our technical path to telepathy which will make practically everything we do today irrelevant... take a lot of pictures...

  • @frankc32

and you wonder why the nwo will end lightbulbs like u. your anger/stupidity/violence is irrelevant, worthless is a value which is worthless,

like if i call you a moron meat puppet. means nothing. i agree words are zero meaning nothing to us slaves of it.genius is a value which is irrelevant. good is a value which is irrelevant... being "sure" of what other people think is an assumption. which is irrelevant. chewing punks is a cowards metaphor of expressing one's irrelevant values

  • @frankc32

your feelings are irrelevant. ignorance=people who can't see beyond their emotions. metaphors are for poets. do u feel the need to write a poem, will that make u feel better? let's start:

there once was a douce named frank

his boyfriend referred to him as his skank...hahahahahahahahaha.... i own u bitch.....

he makes mommy reference cause he's still there

his mommy probably assumed he eats his own cum

because his scumbag father did the same

i am suicidal. so what? at least im not stupid. hahahaaa...and i just took a dump. I named it frank the dump. so here's my ode to frank the dump: sung to the tune of my humps:

my dumps, my dumps, my dumps

i like to fill up my tanks

    with dumps named frank

you don't have to give thanks

    because your mommy already did...

    here's my other song

because he uses words like cheers

after he tries to insult people

    who don't give a shit

frank, did your simple brain try to find words that rhyme after cheers, hahahahahahhaa, fn moron....

  • @frankc32

is that it? just hang myself? i wish because i have MS, diabetes and depression. So when my ex tried to finish me off she plea bargained and only got 4 years, served 2. she got the kids back because of my condition. ilive in a hospice care facility, ex won't let me even talk to the kids, but the best part is that on sat night i get to make fun of morons like you who pay taxes to pay me to insult you. My nurse is laughing..... hahahahaha go hang yourself you morally arbitrary scum

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • best band ever ;D

  • so much of being a "good" rock vocalist is in the singer's vocal stylings, and his is off the charts...off the grid....addictive.

  • I actually hear more Elvis Costello than Bruce Springsteen.

  • I don't see why everyone keeps comparing Craig Finn to Springsteen. If anything, I hear a huge Husker Du influence in his lyrics and guitar playing. Maybe because Bob Mould and Craig Finn are both from Minnesota? Great band either way. One of the few bands these days that truly rock with really fun lyrics. Too many trendy posers out there trying to milk the 1985 alternative sound now. If you weren't there, leave it alone. I was.

  • @ConspiracyGuy1, congrats dude, that is a fucking smart comment amidst a sea of ignorance!

The MN connection between the music of Finn and that of Mould (a.k.a. Sugar) is not to be minimized. Again, a tip o' the hat to you for your insight, sir.

You might be out of your element here, though, strangely enough.

As in, most of the people on this board are hopeless idiots, incapable of appreciating your knowledge.

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • @frankc32 Much thanks my friend. We have to remember that many YouTuber's don't have any real knowledge of music that surpasses Lady Ga Ga or Justin B(whatever the hell that kids name is). Good call with the Sugar reference, I actually forgot about that Mould incarnation. I'll have to dig it out for a listen. Cheers to you sir!

  • @ConspiracyGuy1, dude, for the ultimate MN connection, pop in Mr Robert Zimmerman, (a.k.a. Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde.

    Please!!!

    Dylan is the fucking MAN!!!

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • @ConspiracyGuy1, isn't Dave Pirner from MN also?

Also, Prince, I mean, MN seems to be some fertile ground for talent, no?

    Cheers!

    FrankC32

  • @ConspiracyGuy1 In their singing style and lyrical style...there's more Bruce in The Gaslight Anthem than the Hold Steady; but if you're a big Bruce guy you can hear him in both bands.

  • i like the singer... springsteen meets cocker... stop hating...

  • this song keeps my hope in the music biz alive.

  • Wow, worst offense to rock n' roll ever. Such a bad singer... amazing !

  • Cool?????? Bunch of geek boys, love the song, wish I wad'nt watched

  • seen them in Belfast backed up the counting crows great show fan after that gig

  • What is the Hold Steady's best album?

  • All of them.

  • Wow....this guy has a good voice for what they are doing. He isnt no damn Freddie Mercury but he can sing. Stipe has a great voice and so does this guy. Back off and learn music asshole

  • You have no clue. This band is great. Go put on your third eye blind album.

  • a bunch of rock nerds doing their idols proud. i wish they'd come to ABQ.

  • yes lucero <3

  • @daveco1270, GREAT comment!

    J Mascis and The Boss!

    Cheers!

    SuperBoy

  • Check out lucero for some memphis inspired rock

  • quality song. the band look completely different to what I thought they looked like

  • The poster who mentioned Graham Parker is right. Parker's stuff is similar, and also very good.

I really love the Hold Steady. It's at the very least, the best new roots-rock band to hit the scene in 10 years.

  • These guys are awesome. Any musician or song writer will agree. You kids go in the street and play.

  • I am running into the streets, everyone embrace that!!!

    FrankC32

  • wow, you are entitled to your op

  • Like this ??? try ... Graham Parker and the Rumor

  • LOL you old schooler!!

  • Calm down, dude. They're good. There's no such thing as "best band in the world" though.

  • This is what Bruce Springsteen would sound like if he was still cool

  • @quintvisk He IS still cool

  • @quintvisk

Springsteen still is cool, and he will always be cool

  • Great band-----rockin '

  • you too sunbeam!!!

  • I went there on business!!!

..."gettin' ptretty sick of this interview!"

    - El Guapo -

  • The Hold Steady give my ears a chubby..not sure what that looks like but it's a good thing.

  • I love how much of a difference there is between their live stuff and their studio stuff. They love performing, and they seem almost disappointed when they do their songs in studios.

  • I can't wait to see these guys in April in Bloomington, IN it will be my first time and I'm really looking forward to it!

  • aaah

    such a great song =]

  • really boring stuff!

  • By the way...if you don't think Muse has a sense of humour, you've never seen their Knights of Cydonia video! Which, ironic as it is, is the only time they have a Queen-like quality! Queen, without the tri-sexuality!

  • Muse have a sense of humour for sure. Flogging that dated prog rock they must have, that or they are just cynical bastards shovelling crap to kids. BTW I hadn't noticed how bored hold steady look in this vid, I guess it isnt just 'the interview' Finn is getting pretty sick of.

  • Well, what can I say? I like the way Muse songs shift gears and move into different styles. That must be why there are more than one or two bands,to accomodate all taste.I personally like everything from Linkin Park, to Panic at he Disco, to Flyleaf and Evanesence I'm sure that the Hold Steady would sleep just fine at night, even if they KNEW that they just don't excite me that very much. I don't think they are bad.I try not to criticize others music, because it (should be) an expression of self.

  • Well the shifting gears and styles things is pretty much what prog rock was about. Having been a punk in 1976 I suppose I will never like all mouth and no trousers bands like Muse. There are indeed bands for all tastes, but if your taste is for a band like Muse maybe you aren't setting your sights very high. I'd rather listen to any old Yes album personally, as an expression of self it's a lot less embarassing.

    t band in the histotica

  • You know, I adore Yes as well. And Floyd.I am not the slightest bit embarrassed by my taste in music. I think when people try to be all "Highbrow" about what they deem appropriate, music loses what it is all about. Fun, enjoyment and expression. The bands I love are nearly endless, but we are constrained here.Must I stop likeing the music of a certain era to remain a relevant member of society? I think not! Still loving Muse, is no worse than still loving Zeppelin. It's just MUSIC, man! Enjoy!

  • Damn, I put 2 "R's" in embarassed!

  • That's cause that's how you spell it.

  • You are right. The trouble with posting on these things, is that when you have one of those fairly normal moments, where a word you spell often, suddenly just doesn't look right, and quickly shoot off a comment and hit "send", you can't take it back! Or if you can, I don't know how. I stressed over it for about 3 minutes, then blew it off. Oh well, my life will continue on, I expect!

  • whittkat, you seem like a smart girl, beyond your years, perhaps!

    Frank

  • Well thank you! I love to wake up to a compliment in my inbox!

  • Okay..(Taking a deep breath) I am sure I will be attacked and verbally unbraided, but the lead singer sounds to me like he is channeling Bruce Springsteen.

I like the music well enough, but his vocals give me flashbacks to the E Street Band.

    Okay...fire away!

  • No more like Elvis Costello I feel.

Now Gaslight Anthem is channeling the boss. But hey nothing wrong with that when your talking one of the best lyricist of the past 30 years

  • Funny you say that! I watched the "Swish" video, and said to my husband that he had obviously hovered around Elvis Costello's studio also at some point in his life!

I guess there isn't anything wrong with being inspired by your favorite artists, but when someone can pinpoint someone's heros, maybe you're taking flattery to the extreme? Be inspired, but be your own sound. All your own! But, even my own fave, Muse, sometimes feels like

U2 revisited, but I guess his voice is just similar.

  • You have to remember in this new climate of the music industry the execs are not taking too many chances. So it helps to maybe sound familiar to some other artists and then develop from there. Early Springsteen was compared to Dylan and Mellencamp stole from Motown (The song Hold Tight) So if they get an old fart like me buying their songs it has to be good for them *LOL*

  • No,the guy is cool he sounds more like the man at the railway station in east harper ,telling the dudes to board the train, and no hoods.

  • yes he does sound like eary Springsteen but isn't that because he comes from around the same area and so has the same accent? Sounds nothing like Costello though, I cant imagine why anyone would think that he does.

As for Muse, who the hell needs Queen without the sense of humour?

  • your right. search the hold steady on springsteen

  • "The Boss"..He must be one of their hero's?

  • dude, trace the thread, folks've been evoking the Springsteen name for a loooong time.

  • true enough... mostly by people who seem to be trying to sound like him! I'm a fexible kinda girl, though. I like lots of types of music, but I am drawn to creative, unexpected and clever use of lyrics and sound. I play a little guitar myself, and am inspired by many artists.

  • nice! I hope you play on, sister, and continue to find inspiration in any and every corner of the world!

Music just could be the bridge to close all gaps!

  • allright. x-mas is here and i got $20. i cant wait to go get this new album. and speaking of texas, when can io see the hold steady? were not all redneck republicans down here...

  • Good tune.

Has anybody ever heard of the Counting Crows?

  • Yeah who hasn't is really the question? and how do they apply to The Hold Steady?

  • I figured if you like these guys.....you'd probably enjoy Coounting Crows. They sound very similiar to me. Especially the vocal style.

  • dude... you can't compare these guys to counting crows.

  • When's their next NYC show? (And/or, when will they hit anywhere from DC to Boston??)

  • whats the best album from these guys?

  • definitely boys and girls in america

  • I went there on business!!!

  • wow great performance. and nice to see Finn play a lick at 1.50. wish he did that more

  • gotta love a group that's intentions are to be the "best bar band in America"

  • Fuckin weird to see them in a setting like that. at the shows they are so much more intense. my favorite band by far.

  • Does anyone know about Franz Nikolais (HS piano player) other band the World Inferno Friendship Society ? its his main band. They are amazing. like a punk rock circus.

  • yep.

  • this band are soooogood

  • First time I heard this on the radio, thought it was Bruce...Good song...

  • right on, bro', I thought Springsteen 100%. maybe a little Beck, but too organic for a "artiste" like Mr. Hansen...

  • yeah, I know "an" artiste...

  • "...that's alright I was desperate too,

I'm gettin' pretty sick of this interview"...

  • copyrights and publishing rights and all legal shit aside, this song rocks and these guys are so for real...

    Frank

  • I'm jealous of Bo!

  • Actually, Dave Underhill got to shoot this one. Bo chopped it up.

  • Dave rules all that is.

  • Tune!

  • i went there on business!
