Not excuses for the umpire here. You do not go by noise as an international umpire unless the bat is miles away from the pad, the ball is very close to the bat and therefore there's nothing else it could have hit. The ball missed the bat by miles here. Can't remember seeing a worse caught behind decision that's missed everything

There's a noise that Flintoff makes - bat hitting pad? bat hitting pads? - as the ball passes the blade. That might have been what the umpire was going from. Doesn't make it anything less than a shocker, though!

What an awful decision. The umpire must be blind as the bowler didn't even appeal. It also could have been costly to the result of the match, as New Zealand went on to win the game by 78 runs, Flintoff out for a run a ball 29.
