Funny stuff, Bush has been at war for how many years? and he has been on the most vacations compared to any other president...then you got Bush who stayed in Beijing and made his speaches there. McCain was just "fortunate" to be in the states doing campaigning....and it wasn't a full scale invasion, but they did go a lot further than they said they would, Russia was flexing its muscle.

this may sound like i'm being belittling, but it's a serious question. What does America have to gain by getting involved in this conflict? I mean, I'm a Marine, we love to do our job which is destroy the enemy, but I don't want my fellow Marines to die for a cause that doesn't benefit our nation. Why should America help, and I must have a tangible answer, simply "helping others in need" is not going to cut it.

For a while I found myself contemplating whether Georgia was "worth" a conflict with Russia.

While full-scale war is out of the question, there are other things we can do (such as send troops only to the Capital) to keep Georgia from being conquered. Georgia sent 2,000 of it's own men and women to Iraq to die for us. By % of their military, that is a vast amount.

They were willing to die for us. The most we're willing to do is send them some rice and asprin?

It's a tough call to make.

If Russia gains control of the pipeline that runs trough Georgia and Georgia's seaports, it will gain control of a key Oil Supply for the Western European NATO members.

We are a member of NATO.

Russia's Gazprom [their govt-controlled Oil co.] needs the price of Oil to stay high.

Their economy depends on it.

The price of Oil had been dropping for a month, so Russia had to act.

Russia wants to be able to control NATO countries by using their dependence on Oil against them.

We need to be do everything we can to gain energy independence...all of it.

Full out drilling activity will create thousands of new jobs, and pump money into the economy that is needed for the development of alternative fuels.

The point I was trying to make, and perhaps did it poorly, is that as a member of NATO, we have an obligation to help our fellow members...but no moreso than they themselves are willing to do.

So, if NATO goes to war with Russia, then...

Cheney led Saakashvili to believe that the Russians wouldn't dare take action if he moved Georgian troops into South Ossetia because of US support for the Saakashvili regime.

All Georgian regimes have been overthrown since their independence from the Soviet Union, and Saakashvili was trying to avoid the same fate.

Saakashvili ordered the invasion of South Ossetia for political reasons. The blood of all the innocent people that resulted, Georgian and South Ossetian, is on his hands.
