Ive been playing about a decade now, though I have always been more of a guitar player.

my best tip would be to just take things step by step and have fun with it. That way playing wont feel like work. You'll play for fun, and because of that your progression will just be a bi-product.

Well its just a different sound, you won't be able to play faster, and Im not sure how much it changes in volume.

Just to help you out. Most of any drums tone, whether it be a tom , snare , bass or other wise, comes from the resonator head, not the batter head. The resonater head does most of the adjustement in tone, so by taking off the resonator head, your taking away the ability to completely adjust the tone. Its important to let the air seep through the bass drum, so get a bass head that has a hole already in it. Its commonly ideal to have resonator heads on all drums.

yeah, i realized that if you take the front head off, all you hear is the batter head being played, no drum tone. it is good for recording where you want a concise sound but for unmiced purposes it sucks. i am going to get a head with a 5.5" dynamo, it should let out just enough air while keeping tone.
