It's depressing that the main reason the USA put a man on the moon was for military prowess (to show up the USSR), not to put a medal around the neck of the Human race (although that was a result)

The fuel doesn't push away from air, but it pushes against the space station, sorta, hehe. It's like the hypothetic scenario of the astronaut that is floating away from the space station and is holding a hammer, so he throws the hammer in the opposite direction to float back towards the station. :)

This is much more evident in a low gravity environment, like space. The fuel isn't pushing against anything, it is leaving at speed therefore it is exerting a force in the opposite direction. Rockets dont push against the ground or air when they launch, they just push as much thrust as they can downwards to propel them up. Like rifle recoil.
