While I do appreciate this video and feel you bring up interesting points that highlight very real issues, frenchbk, I find it rather unfair that among the clips you aired to point out stereotypical portrayals of blacks were ones from HBO's "The Wire". I feel it's unfair because, unlike every other crime show on television, the black characters on The Wire are actually well-rounded and realistic. Just like the real Baltimore, most of the cops and politicians are black as well as drug dealers.

modern TV is very keen on showing the black as a sort of stable, wise support characters, whole sit-coms have been made intending to show blacks as capable, moral and hardworking. The Cosby show and Family matters. Thor movie where they changed a wise nordic god into a negro. Green mile, spiderman, m. freeman characters...
if someone thinks spiritually, they understand humanity is only divided by the caring and the uncaring. the caring spiritually minded person knows that they don't belong to a race, and earthly nature is not where it is at. the television media is owned mostly by moguls who are not making caring spiritual-minded programming with good taste.

I actually don't think of "Amos and Andy" being "stereotypical" of blacks any more than "The Honeymooners" is "stereotypical" of whites (and both shows are actually quite similar - that whole "I'm going to get rich, quick!" thing) - in my opinion, "Snaford and Son" was FAR worse. But in some ways, this video hits things on the head (especially cartoons where black people either were portrayed as savages that looked like chimpanzees/Homer Simpson or "mammies"...
The purpose of this is not to label the people in it or to blame any person or even blame the media. The point is, we must always analyze and question what we are watching OURSELVES, draw the line between the fictional characters who make it entertaining and the the real people behind the characters. Representation is hugely important and we have been misrepresented for centuries now, and it's not just white media doing it. These are all just things meant to think about and reflect on, please.
Unfortunately, with characters, the general audience tends to believe that the characters are the real people. And this is what I'm trying to get people to look at, these characters have become real people for the ignorant audience. And it's not just white audiences, it's black audiences too. We all buy into it and that is dangerous because we don't get to know the people, just how they behave on 30-60 minutes of TV and it becomes the expectation of how these people normally behave.
Usually don't respond to comments, but I don't like people misinterpreting the message. I don't think New York is a jezebel, but she did play one on tv, even if not by her own hand. On the contrary I think she is a very beautiful, strong, independent woman who is obviously smart enough to have created and maintained her brand. A violent news clip that was initially aired to catch a criminal is shown repeatedly and only reinforces for the viewer how "buck" the criminal actually is. Just in case you missed this on the news the day it happened, here it is over and over again to show you how the media was racist to show it in the first place.. yet this story does the exact same thing

There are plenty of positive examples of black people for black Americans. You should get a subscription to 'Success Magazine'. I've been a subscriber for almost a year now. There have been many black people written about in that, and they weren't all sports stars either. One guy was the man who created Famous Amos cookies in 1975. The guy was born in Florida in 1936 to a mother who worked as a maid in a white home. She taught him to work hard and ignore racism to make himself into something.
The only significant oppression black people are experiencing in this day and age is the oppression they bring on themselves. Whites aren't in the streets slapping black people around and hanging them from trees. Most black people live in urban areas and the last time I heard a white person say something racist was in a small town. The guy was a redneck idiot. I feel like most black people don't want to accept that most whites today are not racist. It's easier to blame your failings on others.

The only way the change the negative images on Television is to share TV boxes with Latino and Black homes. An overwhelming amount of TV boxes or rating systems for the consumer/viewer are in white homes it has been that way since the 1950's. There have been several attempts at changing this trend but the person who created the boxes have made sure though the FCC that it happening is limited. The FCC would need to be contacted with good judgment on changing the practice.

A better point would be; the sensationalism of the media and pandoring to the lowest common consumer isn't doing the image of black people any good. @hake2005 I never said they didnt, but you cant deny the fact that by far most of the men that died in the Civil war freeing the slaves were white Americans. The Civil War was the bloodiest war in America's history and by far 99% of the men that died on the side of the North were white.

But this is neither here nor there, the Civil War was 200 years ago and we have moved on as a country.

You use reality TV as one of your sources for portrayal of black stereotypes, but the people involved in those shows really do act like that. They may have been chosen by producers and put in unreal situations, but their unreasonable reactions are real.
The portrayal of the buck is primarily put forward through music, written and performed by blacks.
It's disturbing that these stereotypes are continuing in the media, despite how liberal the media is these days. Of course, these are stereotypes. Nothing to be taken seriously, yet many think this is true and some even act like those stereotypes.

While I do appreciate this video and feel you bring up interesting points that highlight very real issues, frenchbk, I find it rather unfair that among the clips you aired to point out stereotypical portrayals of blacks were ones from HBO's "The Wire". I feel it's unfair because, unlike every other crime show on television, the black characters on The Wire are actually well-rounded and realistic. Just like the real Baltimore, most of the cops and politicians are black as well as drug dealers.

I actually don't think of "Amos and Andy" being "stereotypical" of blacks any more than "The Honeymooners" is "stereotypical" of whites (and both shows are actually quite similar - that whole "I'm going to get rich, quick!" thing) - in my opinion, "Snaford and Son" was FAR worse. But in some ways, this video hits things on the head (especially cartoons where black people either were portrayed as savages that looked like chimpanzees/Homer Simpson or "mammies"...

The purpose of this is not to label the people in it or to blame any person or even blame the media. The point is, we must always analyze and question what we are watching OURSELVES, draw the line between the fictional characters who make it entertaining and the the real people behind the characters. Representation is hugely important and we have been misrepresented for centuries now, and it's not just white media doing it. These are all just things meant to think about and reflect on, please.

Unfortunately, with characters, the general audience tends to believe that the characters are the real people. And this is what I'm trying to get people to look at, these characters have become real people for the ignorant audience. And it's not just white audiences, it's black audiences too. We all buy into it and that is dangerous because we don't get to know the people, just how they behave on 30-60 minutes of TV and it becomes the expectation of how these people normally behave.

Usually don't respond to comments, but I don't like people misinterpreting the message. I don't think New York is a jezebel, but she did play one on tv, even if not by her own hand. On the contrary I think she is a very beautiful, strong, independent woman who is obviously smart enough to have created and maintained her brand. Same with Flavor Flav, he's obviously much smarter than this character he played, but in reality tv you have to have characters to get ratings. It's the way it works..

I'm leery of bits like this that complain without offering any solution. A violent news clip that was initially aired to catch a criminal is shown repeatedly and only reinforces for the viewer how "buck" the criminal actually is. Just in case you missed this on the news the day it happened, here it is over and over again to show you how the media was racist to show it in the first place.. yet this story does the exact same thing

There are plenty of positive examples of black people for black Americans. You should get a subscription to 'Success Magazine'. I've been a subscriber for almost a year now. There have been many black people written about in that, and they weren't all sports stars either. One guy was the man who created Famous Amos cookies in 1975. The guy was born in Florida in 1936 to a mother who worked as a maid in a white home. She taught him to work hard and ignore racism to make himself into something.

The only way the change the negative images on Television is to share TV boxes with Latino and Black homes. An overwhelming amount of TV boxes or rating systems for the consumer/viewer are in white homes it has been that way since the 1950's. There have been several attempts at changing this trend but the person who created the boxes have made sure though the FCC that it happening is limited. The FCC would need to be contacted with good judgment on changing the practice.

A better point would be; the sensationalism of the media and pandoring to the lowest common consumer isn't doing the image of black people any good. This would be a defensible point, that the media in all forms currently is exacerbating the problem. However, the narrator is suggesting that the media is causing the problem. The racism shown on this video primarily shows the cooperation of blacks denigrating blacks. You never hear about how on jobs, day to day real things that are done to black people by whites, even in the schools that much. @hake2005 I never said they didnt, but you cant deny the fact that by far most of the men that died in the Civil war freeing the slaves were white Americans. The Civil War was the bloodiest war in America's history and by far 99% of the men that died on the side of the North were white.
This is not to say anything bad about blacks, only that whites just so happened to free them.
But this is neither here nor there, the Civil War was 200 years ago and we have moved on as a country.

@Jnest55 but the civil war wasn't about slavery it was about capitalism... the slaves were freed during the civil war to help the North beat the South because they were losing. And, because of color and the way the media portrait blacks, is the reason why blacks are most likely to hear no than there white counterparts, but like you said blacks shouldn't use race do determine their success. They just have to remember to endure more.

You use reality TV as one of your sources for portrayal of black stereotypes, but the people involved in those shows really do act like that. They may have been chosen by producers and put in unreal situations, but their unreasonable reactions are real.
The portrayal of the buck is primarily put forward through music, written and performed by blacks.
