I took some music theory courses. It's grueling but rewarding. I recommend every composer learn the classic methods. It might not be intuitive, but it will make you a better composer/musician.
hey Acepincter, awesome tutorial thanks ! can i ask you,do you have any trick to expand the 2 bar loop to a whole song ? Cause i get stuck very often at that stage
another good tut. never really thought about changing the velocity. lol. uhm, id figure youd know how to fix this issue, so yeah ill ask, i always use an ass load of effects, a lot of automation clips, an ass load of shit, but the problem is the more stuff i use, i always get this stupid crackling sounds, i dont know how to get rid of it. . .
@ROZEAUDIO Theyre underuns caused by your computer lagging because it cant cope with processing demands, make sure your using ASIO4ALL Sound drivers and play around with buffering length. I dont know too much on the subject but good luck!
hey, thank you! even if it doesnt help:) i really apriciate that you spend alot of your time doing tutorials:) and btw do you have a tutorial like getting a normal vocal of your voice to sound like a crowd? ty for your attention
this is what i'm using for some time and i call it a draft....putting as much sounds and instruments and make them all sound better until i decide to rearrange and make a full song
Very nice very nice. However, the thing you said at the beginning... "traditional" music theory is a much better way to learn. And that'll never change. And "next-generation musicians" won't be playing on a piano roll with a mouse, musical instruments are still the way to go.
I disagree. I think even of the next age, piano's will still be incredibly popular. If you're familiar with Piano's, and playing them hands on, rather then using fl studio to do it, then you should know that hearing the sound doesn't compare to the feeling of actually playing the music on a piano. It's unbeatable.
not to say your method is a lie, since obviously there is no reason for you to lie... and ur tryin to help us.. but seriously with this method it'll take us years if not centuries to learn everything.. and how long (in terms of years) did it take you to learn everything you know about FL?
I like your ideas. The first part, about changing only one part, just reminds me of the scientific method of keeping a control and only changing the variable.
YOOOOOOOOOOOO hahahaha!!!!!!!!!! man , ur awsome!! that is some of the best advice i've ever gotten........and coolest shit ever....... as if u messed up that windows startup haha!! awsome!!
lol its looks like Jeff Goldblum just moved to FL studio...whenever i watch your tutorials that thought comes to my mind! You sound like Jeff Goldblum! A lot!
Thanks. This isolated experimentation seems like a staple learning method for piecing together a vast subject like music. I also appreciated the Intro to Intervals which I found via warbeats. Hopefully soon I will reveal some of my own mad FL experiments. MWAHAHA. =)
What a great tutorial. Its about time for someone to put out some tutorials that is on a level that everyone can easily understand and use in their own pursuit of musical creation.
You know I seen another guy who had included links to the project files used so that the viewer can also get hands on while following along. I am going to subscribe to your channel please let me know if this is something you might consider.
Again, thanks for breaking it down your a pretty good teacher!
Although velocity typically indicates the "strength" of a note, it can do many things. It is most often _mapped_ to volume, but it may also control parameters like brightness, attack, filter, harmonics, etc.
For example, a (real) struck guitar string sounds _different_ at different strengths, not just louder or quieter. It can have varying tones based on the strength or might make a bit of extra fuzz at maximum. A good velocity control will factor these sorts of things in.
Man, thank you, I liked how you used the Windows log in sound, to say that's so lame, I have now made a great intro to every CD/Mixtape/Song/or anything else, I love it, it's so much fun! You really do open my eyes Ace, you are a great teacher too.
Excellent tutorial! I wholly agree that limiting yourself is key in learning a given facet or technique as it is so easy to get lost in effects, instrument selections, etc. - ultimately getting very little done with no new knowledge or skill gained (this has been my experience time and again). Looking forward to more tuts - good job!
nice tutorial, thanks! by the way the windows startup sounds were created by Brian Eno, who probably knows about 100 times more about sound producing than you, so give him some respect :)
Yeah, I didn't mean to knock his work - he is an excellent sound designer. But the yound producers out here should *LOVE* the opportunity to personalize their studio with custom sounds. Sometimes they just need to hear it for the idea to form.
Well i dont think velocity can do more with a melody not with fruity love philters effect anyway because you can customize a melody much more indepth than with simple velocity. Such as changing the cut resonance low pass or high pass over time. Sure velocity is nice and i believe it should be used on most melodies to make it sound more realistic.
You're missing the point, D4rkMaj. Sure, you can use the FL Love philter, (the most CPU intensive filter) to generate a lot of variety in your pattern. But you could just as easily use the "mod X" velocities to do the same. The point is, however, that velocity has been a crucial component of music for thousands of years.
Listen to "Clair de lune" or "Moonlight Sonata" and ask yourself what they would sound like if EVERY note were the same strength? Boring, repetitive, ugly. That's how.
Very good tutorial man I like the idea of limiting you bring up. Also with the changing of velocity it just sounds like your using a filter is thier really a difference between the two because now that opens up two cans of worms.
There's a big difference, but it comes down to the individual instruments you choose. On a piano, velocity refers to HOW HARD you hit the keys, changing the loudness and timbre of the strings. With a synth, you can typically assign any function to the velocity, making certain modifiers come alive when you hit with force. Velocities accent melodies & rhythms within a pattern. Filters subtract frequencies from the overall sound. They can be used together, but velocity can do much more!
so true with what you say about next generation of music... I went to buy a keyboard today.. this ignorant prick was a total jerk, did not get my buinsnes.. I said I need a midi keyboard and he says for what do I need it for.. as soon as I said I produce on the computer he was like hmm.. and kept asking questins and acting like it was retarded.. then he asked me somthing and I said I'll make my own drum beats and he said why would you use your own when there are hundreds already made... wow...
knowing and comprehending music theory and harmonies gives u a different view of music and opens you're horizones.U can't create a better music product than someone who knows music theory.Don't be that ignorant...
What I mean is not to dismiss music theory, but rather to suggest that there are other possible notations that might be more intuitive than the Clefs or Piano rolls. For example, the way the 'Thummer' is constructed, or something that would take intervallic distance from the choice of finger used. Technology is changing music theory's scope and presence.
you have a wonderful mindset and approach to this program.your videos are some of the best and most instuctive I have seen..your comment on the next generations understanding of music theory ,has some merit, in respect to such programs as this one which doesn't incorporate a "Staff view" due in part because the writers of this software aren't musicans themselves. GOl and the rest are very smart folks, but it is evident they do not understand theory so they just ignore it.
U said it best...Focus!on da 1 thing U want 2 master.Example I wntd 2 lern how 2 use da slicer.so I took a random sample, which at 1st didn't like,& manipulated it using da cntrls on da slicer(timimg, streching, etc) & sticking 2 dat 1 smple til it sounded right to me.I later added instruments, but I didn't stop focusing on dat 1 sample til I actually liked it. Now I pretty much can take any sample and create a whole new sound that sounds nothing like the original after I "slice" it!!
Bingo! I'm even trying to write an !!acapella!! song, in FL Studio, using my own lousy voice. In the process, I've found numerous ways to record my own voice and make it sound like a different person, such as stuffing cotton in my mouth, drinking lemon juice, looking up/down as far as I can, choking myself with a hand... It's amazing the things you can come up with...
Speaking of a new way of writing music as you mentioned, you should check out the new controller called the Thummer, which is a MIDI controlelr with an innovatve design. I think you should check it out.
I gave it a look! It certainly does look poised to change the face of music. I didn't see any recognizable structure of intervals or notes. I wonder what it is like to play on?
It works like this: Every move two the left or right, is a move of one whole tone. (2 semi-tones) A / diagonal move is a 5th. A \ diagonal move is a 4th.
And transposing is equal no matter which tone you start out at. Just do the same progression.
The way it's laid out, the corresponding white keys on a piano are on the middle of the instrument. The flats to the left and the sharps to the right.
So basically you are teaching people to create stolen music with subtle velocity changes ala Lady Gaga or ... any other musician today? Cool...
