Imagine if they went back in time and prevented themselves from making this movie. All the mistakes of movie history could be avoided. How sweet would that be?!
wishful thinking... truth is, we all know what really happened that day. This movie is a fine example of american view on a "Fair fight" concept, that we see so well these days.
This movie played out like a Twilight Zone episode because nothing happened! They went back in time, interacted with a few people from the era, had lengthy debates about morals and ethics and then the same storm that took them there brought them back and in the end, they didn't do anything and nothing changed! Rod Serling would be proud! lol
SPOILER. @baronvg: The whole point was Cdr Owens had to go back in time in order to help invent the Nimitz, not for the Nimitz to prevent the attack. A fake-out/twist ending, not a total waste even if you're disappointed.
@youngfogey1 First off, I never said I was disappointed. I actually liked the movie and wasn't upset that they didn't single handed-ly try to take on the Japanese. As for Owens, I must have missed that part. Why would Owens need to go back? Obviously the Nimitz was gonna be designed and built anyway. Owens helping to do that since he was stranded in the past changes the timeline which goes against his character's motivation.
Just watched this and WOW was it disappointing... "hey here's a great premise! LETS DO NOTHING WITH IT!" Only redeeming quality was the jet footage was 100% real.
Anyone who liked the concept of this film might want to check out Zipang. It's an anime, same time travel idea, only with a much smaller Aegis Cruiser, and they're Japanese. Damn good series.
@harlequin2262 thanks for the recommendation hey if you like the concept of this movie you should check out the Axis of time novels by John Birmingham
This movie was okay, but it was somewhat disappointing. If they made a remake of this movie with more action scenes, better acting, and modern graphics, I think it could be epic.

One of my fave from my childhood. I loved this movie when I first saw it in the early 80's. I just bought the DVD and showed it to my pal. although, he'd never seen it before he enjoyed it as much as any movie made today,
@BlueUndergroundinc The Final Countdown reappeared on region1 at my JBL home cinema on Christmas Eve. The transfer is better then first edition region2 that I have. Colours are striking bold with natural colour balance. Contrast and brightness spot on! The Dolby Stereo 6channel mix with newly created stereo surrounds worked fairly well as normal and with centre back and overhead matrix surround.
@BlueUndergroundinc I also ordered the regionFree blutray same day the DVD arrived. I’m not over crazy with 8channel as I know what to listen for and can tell what is happening on the four channel surround outputs. I done basic stereo mixing and know how it works. Its okay just as long as it had true discreteness, unlike Star Trek the motion picture that mix is so messed up!
@BlueUndergroundinc Listen to the original Dolby stereo 70mm print if one can ever be tracked down and doubtful it would be in good conduction with faded colour and the mag tracks might have flaked away.
@BlueUndergroundinc What they did for the 8channel is take some portions of the left and right fronts and folded it onto the surrounds! What a holy mess! That is not how you create stereo surrounds. The original monaural surround would come in as and when its called for on the mix not constant surround all the time! SIGH
@BlueUndergroundinc Maybe you guys can do a Star Trek original revisit and do it better than Paramount, because clearly they haven’t a clue? Even the grain was gone! DNR and I hate EE SIGH A few missing sound effects that I noticed!
Anyway looking forward to the bluray and I’ll see if it meets the expectations on the Dolby Stereo TrueHD8channel
