The British treated their own like dirt throughout their history, we only need to look at the workhouses and the textile industry to understand this. Your original point was not that the British population lived in misery, your original 'point' was to try and shame the British human rights record (rather pathetically) by highlighting our textile industry..fact of the matter is, every factory around the globe was a terrible, miserable, depressing place to work in before the industrial revolution. I own and have read Wilde's works, so I can agree with you; that particular quote is not in any of them. Much like many other of his famous witticisms and remarks that became famous through hearsay. However, most people to attribute it to Oscar Wilde, it fits his prose, it fits his manner perfectly. It's a perfectly Wildian quote, so I have no difficulty accepting that it was by him. It may not have been..but the point still stands, it was not Shakespeares.

Let's investigate the Arab slave trade shall we? (First of all, remember that Britain was the first European country to outlaw slavery).
Firstly, it lasted more than a millenium..or 1000 years. T'was prominent in Asia, North Africa, East Africa and various countries throughout Europe. By the way..the slaves did not have to be different; either in creed, colour or religion. Many Muslim slaves were kept. (As well as ARABS, plenty of them incidentally).

If you want to to recomend some books, I shall recomend two of my favourites: One is 'An economic history of the British Isles' by Arthur Birnie which will take you from the prehistoric age to the the second post-war period. The other is 'Sources on English constitutional history' by Stephenson and Marcham, which will take from A.D 600 to George VI.
Apologies if it seems like I'm showing off here..but I do know my stuff when it comes to British history / our human rights record.
