  • you sure its the heat from the blown out match doing that? cause the torch through the watch glass took a while. and it seems to me that hot sulfur/oxidizer fumes might make more sense. or some chemical trace from the head of the match. do it with the other wooden end of the match and I will believe you. I don't doubt that an ember would set it off. but without even that seems more chemical in nature.

  • @demnlordd666 When i first performed it with the torch, the nitrocellulose wasn't completely dry, so it took time. It was set off easy by the match because it was very dry.

  • @dhwanitchem ya I also saw the same trick in another vid before I saw yours too. but no one used just a stick end, not saying you are wrong or its just seemed like it could contribute to ignition.

  • @demnlordd666 would be really cool to watch some one light it at a distance with a green laser ya know

  • Also try using excess acid that way the nitrocellulose can be slightly extra fluffy when dry giving better results...

  • Umm ive tried it with both room temp and abt 0-5C when it was cooled the result was better so try it once....

  • can you do this nitrating with potassium nitrate and sodium bisulfate.

  • I make nitrocellulose with 92% H2SO4 and adding KNO3, no HNO3. I let it sit for 20 hours in the nitration mix. What do you think about it?

  • @XBiteABulletX Yes i guess its quite possible, chemistry is all about innovation.

  • I tried to prepare nitrocellulose several times but when i sink the cotton in the acid mixture it decomposes- it becomes jelly-like and later dissolves completely...Can someone explain this observation and please tell me where's my mistake?Do you think the temperature of the acid mixture matters?....

  • @vaderka By decomposes do you mean that Brown gas is releases? If yes then the ratio of the acid is not correct in my opinion. Remember H2SO4:HNO3 = 7:3. The temp of the acid doesnt really matter according to me. Try letting the mixture cool down till room temp and then add cotton.

  • Does this work with 98% sulfuric acid and 98% nitric acid?

  • @lordanjan1 Yes, It does work with 98% H2SO4 but i dont know how u got 98% nitric acid, because it is not commercialy available. Check the label again.

  • @dhwanitchem Nah...Its legal where I live. Thanks. Gr8 video.

  • Isn´t ihe ion NO3- ?

  • How could I adjust the ratio if to work with 11.6 molar nitric acid and 18 molar sulfuric acid also how can I calculate what the ratio will be with any other concentration of hno3 thank you!

  • very good video, 5* and im subbing. looking forward for good vids in the future.

  • @jbohbot1 Thank You Soo Much!

  • Hey does your nictric solution work when making nitroglycerin ?

  • @AdventLt Yes it is the same process and the nitrating solution remains the same

  • yes it does and the production of nitroglycerine is very simple. you can purchase glycerin oil at a pharmacist, nitric acid is obtainable by a simple letter stating your a teacher in need of the product sent in to a chemistry store or on ebay and teh same with sulfiric acid. but you have to be very very careful with nitroglycerine it's no toy to play with or have fun with. 1g can blow off a finger tip.

  • @AdventLt yes, it would have to but you'll make true glycerine only with fuming nitric acid >90%...he does not state what concentration the acid is...concentrated could also mean azeotrope nitric acid which is around 69%, and which i think he used...That one is not good for nitroglycerin because you will get mono or dinitro glycerion in higher concentrations and it will not be as powerful as normal glycerol trinitrate and you will need a detonator for it

  • Wow, very good video!

I will do this experiment next week, too.

    Good job!

  • Thanks!

  • nice video.

    Chemistry is always interersting.

    5 stars

  • Thank you!

  • hi im a begginer in this but yesterday i nitrate a little batch of mannitol .

well i do a lot of research but in general ..how much time take to nitrate polyols?

i waited about 15-20 minutes since the last adition of mannitol.

    very nice video 5/5

  • yes the time you have stated for nitration of mannitol is correct... all polylol have approximately the same time for nitration. 15 - 20 minutes is perfectly fine but do not hurry too much other wise nothing would nitrate ..... the nitronium ion responsible for nitrate has to attack the molecule of your polylols so be patient and wait for a minimum of 20 mins.

  • be carfull with that stuff

  • yes of course acctually it really works

and i purify it with acetone

    really cool

  • Yes it is Soluble in acetone and when it evaporates it gives pure Nitrocellulose

  • Do you have to filter out the un-nitrated part? Or will that just dissolve too? I have made nitrocellulose several times now with the nitrate salt/sulfuric acid method and I always get a slowish burn rate and some black residue.

  • @JaycubL No there is no need of filtering , give the mixture some time, stir it regularly and try once more, better luck this time.!

  • Very nice! :)

    5 stars!

  • Thanks a lot!! Love your videos too!!
