  • Such a magnificent classic gem; they simply don't make them like this anymore...

  • classic

  • Im getting my magadrive soon, any recomendations.?

  • @greyhoundgill What type of games do you like? Some of my favourites are: ESWAT, Mercs, Forgotten Worlds, Magical Hat Flying Turbo Adventure, Golden Axe etc...

  • @ianwilson1978 My style is castlevania like stuff. I also like altered beast (which I have coming) so side scrolling 2d action things

  • Well done mate!

  • Very awesome review Sonic the Hedgehog is such a great game i have completed so many times with all 6 emeralds

    ............ I Subscribed

  • @Shad0wM0nk Yeah I'll be getting Sonic & Knuckles mate, probs be a bit hard to get in mint condition what with the cardboard box. Once I've got it I'll have them all- other than Sonic CD.

  • I don't know how long you have been into the megadrive but in the 90;s there was a guy in sunderland who used to sell jap megadrive games from his bedroom :) There was one game i bought from there called mr komatsu (i think) but i cant find it anywhere (as that's probably not its name lol) and i was wondering if you knew anything about it?

    Thanks

  • You mean a place called Megaware? Ran by Colin Chapman? It's got to be the same one, I used to be a regular customer! Was talking about it to a few people over on the Retro Gamer forum. Fantastic place! I think the game you mean might be: Osomatsu-kun Hachamecha Gekijo

  • Yeah that's the place and yes it was awesome it was best game shop ever and Colin was a real cool bloke he once let me take his Megadrive home to show my parents how much better a jap machine was! Good times and cheers for the game title ill look it up

  • Yeah Colin was a nice bloke, it was a fantastic business he had going and it was a really exciting time. Those were the days!

  • It's still as fresh now as it was in 91

  • Agree completely- its aged really well!

  • I remember getting this one christmas day 1991 along with my MD. A true classic.

  • It seems everyone has great memories of this game- iconic really! :-)

  • I remember I played this when I was about 5 or 6 years old...I've got in the third act everytime and I've everytime died on 5:30 ... I wanna play it again, but my megadrive doesn't work

  • You should try and pick another Mega Drive up, legendary machine :-)

  • That's hard..I live in czech republic and I haven't seen it anywhere for a long time...but I just emulated this game on pc..oh...that's so great to play it again! :) but megadrivě is megadrive... :-)

  • Just found out that there are 2 versions of sonic 1 for the mega drive? One version has moving clouds on green hill zone and one doesn't? You any info on this ian?

  • Hmmm news to me mate, where did you here it from? Sounds interesting! :-)

  • Yes its true. Just dug up my pal uk version and the clouds don't move unlike your jap version. I'll check my jap version out when I get it in a few days. They must of made a few improvements to the jap version.

  • Just bought the jap version of sonic 1 myself. Thought id pick it up for the better artwork.

  • Nice one Dave, great artwork :-)

  • Very cool! I like this version better than the snes version. The backgrounds are much nicer and the music is better.

  • Guess you mean the Pirate version Sonic 4?

  • It just says "Sonic the Hedgehog" on the title. It is a snes rom for the emulator. It has sort of a wierd redish background. Maybe it's not an official version. I don't know really. I'm a total noob. :)

  • Yeah that's Sonic 4 mate! It's an unofficial pirate version which came out late on for the SNES.

I think the physical version is probs worth a few quid :-)

  • Cool. Thanks for letting me know. That's why it looks like rubbish.

This may be a silly question, but do Sega Genesis games play on the Mega Drive?

  • Most will do apart from the later ones which were region locked :-)

  • Thanks! By the way...the UK rocks! I went there several years ago and had a blast!

  • Its much better playing this game at 60 htz. I wonder why they couldn't even sort the slowness out on rereleases like on collections for gamecube xbox etc.

  • Yeah it makes a big difference to the game mate at the true speed, just suits it better.

Probably laziness more than anything; not sorting it out for later collections...

  • The gamecube version of sonic mega collection run at 60hz, it was the crappy ps2 version that was 50hz only

  • Of all of the Sonic games i have played the first is my favorite to me.

The music is fantastic and the level layouts are great.

  • Completely agree! :-)

  • man that camera you use is phenominal for recording tv images

  • I'm really pleased with it! There's some blur as the games is so fast but otherwise it's excellent! Thanks mate :-) Ian.

  • I love Sonic The Hedgehog. I really suck at it bad though. You're way better at playing it.

  • Lol! I'm ok, had plenty of practice over the years! :-)

  • How do you get such a flicker free image from a CRT TV set?

  • I've got an excellent HD webcam which works a treat! There's a video about it on my channel under "Best of the Rest"... :-) Ian.

  • sonic 1 was the best of the series i finish the game in 1 night

  • You did well! :-)

  • A genesis/megadrive needs to be played on a Sony Trinitron TV set or similar device ;-)

  • Couldnt agree more! :-D

  • I loved the starlight zone music :)

  • Yeah that was nice, good level as well :-)

  • lol it has got brill music =D and your right it does play fantastic still even after nearly 20 years

  • Thanks mate :-) Ian.

  • I just love the Sonic music... even though Im a Nintendo fan boy ha ha ;o)

  • Aah come over from the dark side! :op lol :-) x

  • I was always terrible at Sega back in the Megadrive-days. I always tried to explore the levels instead if just running, and thats when things start to go bad ^^ However, I've always enjoyed seeing the game being played, and the music is ikonic to say the least. But my stars, am I terrible at this game ^^

  • I want to see a video of you playing Sonic mate! :-D Ian.

  • one of those games that never get's old fantastic!!!

  • Completely agree- it still plays great now and will in another 10/20 years! :-) Ian.

  • Aww man, you've gotta love some sonic action. Just great. Never gets old. Great job Ian

  • This is what memories are made of mate eh? :-D Ian.

  • mm so much awesomeness in this vid

  • He He thanks Kim! Sonic is great.. :-)

  • Absolute classic! One of the best games ever. I could never get all the chaos emeralds though!

    Nice video Ian.

  • Cheers Joseph, I never could get all the emeralds either. It used to frustrate me! :-) Ian.

  • Sonic 3 is the best sonic game, play it as soon as u can. Nice vid

  • I've got Sonic 2 on it's way (spoiler!) but still try to hunt down Sonic 3 in mint condition. :-)

  • I actually did not play this game until a couple of years ago, because I did not have this game as a kid. My Genesis that I got in 1994 did come with Sonic 2 and I had a blast with that game.

  • I'm looking forward to getting Sonic 2 (and the other ones) to do videos for them also :-)

  • Ian, You've definitely have to add the Sega CD to the collection. There are a few gems on the Mega CD!

  • I definitely want one mate, if not just for Sonic CD and Final Fight CD!

  • Ian:

If you are into shmups, you must pick up Robo Aleste, Silpheed, and Android Assault. If you think Musha Aleste is great, wait until you play Robo Aleste! :)

  • I do like my shmups mate- even though I'm pretty crap at them!

Your making me want an Mega CD even more now, just need to find a mint boxed Jap MK1 when I've got some spare cash :-D Ian.

  • What about Dangerous Seed, Gley Lancer (was supposed to be Grey Lancer but you know what happens with the R), Truxton.... ;-)

  • Haha! Those are all great games, especially TRUXTON! =P~

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe all the games you mentioned only came in cartridge form. Were there CD versions of this game?

  • Yeah I guess they all come in cartridge as that's the most common megadrive/genesisgame form I own ;-)

Not sure if they do have specialized cd version. Could very well be with enhanced soundtracks and such.

  • This is "*the* 16 bit console game, for me. There are games I like more from the entirety of gaming history, but on 16 bit consoles, absolutely nothing touches this.

I think it was the first game I played where any of my non-games-playing friends looked at it and went "Wow... that's impressive", rather than "Huh... games are for kids."

  • Yeah I'd agree with you on that Steve, it still looks good even now in my opinion.. :-)

  • 5/5 stars as always

  • Thanks! :-)

  • I love Sonic GREAT VID

  • Cheers matey :-)

  • great video, you know the last stage in your video always reminded me of altered beasts, fel zeus will appear "sonic.. rise from from your grave!" xD

  • Ha Ha maybe someone should do a mod! :-)

  • I'm trying to think if there is a most super awesome game than Sonic the Hedgehog, and the only one that came to my mind is Sonic 2... xD

This was my first game ever man, Sega rlz....

    Great video...

  • It's a gem isnt it, still so great to play even now! :-D

  • Awesome gameplay. Sonic the hedgehog is part of our childhood for some and it is always good to look back at the games. The music never get's old either!!! I love the bonus stage music aswell =D

  • I agree mate! :-)

  • I'll give posting this a shot. YouTube's acting flaky tonght.

I must have played this game after Sonic 2, as Sonic 2 is what came packed in with my system. Both are epic games.

You play a wicked game of Sonic. :)

    5/5'd.

    STAY AWESOME mate! :)

  • Cheers Mark, I love this game! :-)

  • You have good taste, my friend. :)

    STAY AWESOME! :)

  • Yeah - I remember that Games Master! Never missed it! Wasnt to keen on series 3 with Dexter Fletcher tho!

  • Great! The original's with Dominik Diamond were just special, the greatest gaming show ever.... sorely missed. :-(

  • i remember first playing this back in 1991,man what a great game..i have the cart only not the box unfortunally

  • That's what it's all about Shawn, those memories as a kid that are still so vivid! I remember playing this on my nan's big old CRT TV and it just blew me away! :-) Ian.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog's storyline has alway been about setting Melbius free or something.

    I'm sad anit I?

  • Mobius! :-)

Not sad, just a fan of a great game! :-)

  • Mmmm Peach Melbius.... lol

  • This is my one of my favorite games, period. I play it every once in a while, and it doesn't get boring taking different routes every time.

  • Agree mate :-)

  • I know it's not a common view, but I actually thought that the Jap version was a little bit too fast !! I was more comfortable with the pace of the UK version.

  • I know what you mean but I do like it when Sonic's going full pelt in the Jap version!

  • MY FAV IAN !!

  • One of mine also mate :-)

  • You know the Japanese version is actually an reworked version of the US/UK one?

There's more parallax scrolling and they fixed the instant death spike glitch.

  • I do now Larry! It's shit loads faster I know that much! :-) Ian.

  • My favorite Megadrive game. Great in so many ways.

I personally think the series got worse with every game following the original.

  • It was an Epic game mind I agree, one of my faves (if not my fave) also. :-D Ian.

  • I think they turned to shit Sonic Heroes onwards.

I LOVED Sonic CD and Sonic 3 and Knuckles was an awesome game to round up the mega drive series.

  • Yeah.. I enjoyed Sonic 2... and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Played them all a lot. I didn't like Sonic CD that much. I thought the levels were really scrappy and random compared to Sonic 1. The whole thing seems a bit rushed to me. The music was bloody great on the European / Jap Sonic CD though !!

  • Yeah, it was the music that really made it for me.

Any game that has the lyrics "work that flabby chin, come on now!" as a boss theme has to be awesome.

Shame they screwed up the US soundtrack, bar the opening theme which was pretty cool.
