One of the great things about a four speed car, is when building the engine, you can get as wild as you want with the cam shaft, solid lifter, massive lift and duration, go wild with compression, build it just to pound the ground ! When you come to a stop sign, just push the clutch in ! No problem.

automatic transmissions aren't faster... in new cars, auto transmissions are about the same as manual's because of the technology, but really there is no competition in the practicality between a manual and an automatic. there is a reason why top of the line cars like Vipers and ZR1 do not come in automatic.

Don't forget though, there's also a reason why top of the line Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, etc do use "automatics". If you can still call them that, thanks to the dual clutch gearboxes etc they are actually marginally quicker than they would be with a manual.

But when it comes to true torque converter automatics you're spot on.

@peepow123 yes and no,for a "street driven" car with a bunch of HP and torque I would still go with the automatic above manual, that's because manual trannys and clutches (especially old/classics ones) strong enough to keep all that power are really unconfortable/hard /harsh for everyday use...

Btw if you want fast/strong shift from an auto you can still install shift kits to make it faster in gear changes.. ;)

p.s.even on modern cars sequentials tranny are faster/better than manuals ;)
