  • It needs a way to save the game, looks really sweet though!

  • @sgtredd1 It always saves everything. In single player, it just doesn't remember your location. Everything else is saved when you do it.

  • @PaulSpeed That's disappointing, if I'm exploring a considerable distance from the spawn point then that's like not even being able to save the game...;(

  • @PaulSpeed Yeah, it will be fixed at some point. In the mean time, you could run your own local server and just connect to that. It remember where the players were when they logged off... and the world database is the same for single and multiplayer.

  • pc specs please to compare? awesome game

  • @qazeka Note also to anyone reading this and interested: there is a mythruna forum where sometimes stuff like PC specs is also discussed.

  • GREAT! Add elements like glue, to stick objects to the wall, add ladders and buckets to collect water, add weapons and shields, ropes maybe, work on the physics, because they're great. Work on the charakter, so that maybe you can 'build' your own clothes and put them own, that would make it more awesome. Create a multiplayer-server to download, so that people can open their own servers and than, you should make something like a trailer, so that people can see and find this great game! Keep it on

  • @burningtree23 All of that is coming. There is already a multiplayer server you can run yourself though it's not yet 100% straight-forward. There is a page on the wiki for how to do that. A "click to run" server is coming soon.

I will make a game trailer of my own closer to alpha. I have the majority of it story-boarded and I just need to wait for the game elements to catch up.

Thanks for the kind words. :)

  • dose it have bad guys

  • @dakotatisme Not yet. It's coming.

  • I played it, awesome, in HD, runs well (better than minecraft), looks good has mipmapping and bump mapping... it has furniture and ruins, this is what minecraft should be. Plus I also make java games using jMonkey... and something like this would have been, well, tough to say the least. Awesome!

  • This game looks nice, will it be F2P and multiplayer? if so we could create epic middle earth roleplay servers!

  • @turret001 It is already multiplayer and is currently still free to play. I will charge something eventually so that I can focus more time on the game. Check out the mythruna forums for more information: mythruna dot com slash forum

There is even the basic beginnings of a modders group there since the game already support scripting.

  • GREAT GAME

  • This is like minecraft but super HD and a little behind... :3

  • What's the advantage of it over Minecaft? Honestly. It looks cool, has place able tables and such, but what else? Thanks for posting!

  • @jeppestrale Well, since it's only about 15% done then I guess custom placeables are all I have over Minecraft at the moment. I'd be further along but physics has taken a while... there's another video about where that was from a few months ago. I stopped to implement property protection and other anti-griefing measures and now I'm back to physics integration.

  • this actually looks pretty good

  • From some minutes played... fairly nice game, though have you though of making some more appropriate player model (even if placeholder)? Some blocky\capsully character with walk animation would likely work better than entirely static bald female model.

  • @YellowAfterlife The model was free and already rigged for animation. She has hair but it still doesn't import properly.

I don't want to use block characters because then people will think that's the style will use. And this model is so bad that it's hopefully obvious that it is temporary... a better model might confuse people into thinking that I plan to keep it. :)

  • that is a really good village

  • Minecraft?

  • Very beautiful game :D I only have one question, will there ever be any settings to lower the graphics? My computer can only run it at 2 FPS >,<

  • @MCVideosGalore Eventually. I'm trying to work on features before too many optimizations because otherwise I end up having to re-optimize all the time. At that point I will play with more "low quality" settings as I'm able.

In the mean time, you can use F12 to control the clip. Shrinking it to 64 meters may give back some frames.

  • @MCVideosGalore I just added an experimental "low quality" mode that may help it run better on some computers. If you run the game with the 20111218 version that I just put up, hitting F8 will toggle the quality.

  • @PaulSpeed Thanks, I'll try it out now!

  • @PaulSpeed Just tried it, it helped a little, but only increased my frame rate to 2. (Windows Vista For the Loss ;-;...)

  • @MCVideosGalore If you'd like to visit the mythruna forum sometime, I'd be curious to know more about what video settings you were using and stuff. The client.log dumps information about how the game sees your video card capabilities, etc... posting that to the tech support forum might give me more insight. Thanks for trying again, sorry it wasn't faster.

  • @PaulSpeed Ok, I'll post my system specs and all the settings and stuff when I have time. (Probably tomorrow)

  • The game looks good but I can't help but to think that it needs more...... faces.

Seriously everything looks like a block. If you wanted to make it look like minecraft then you should have done a little more.... variation.

Perhaps being able to create more shapes than squares and rectangles would vastly improve the graphics.

I am well aware of the advantages of box modeling as many blender users use the box model approach as do I but the game just seems to.... bland...

  • @autonomous2010 Keep in mind that this video is 7 months old now. And even currently I am only about 15% done with the game. In addition to all of the slopes in this video there are now round columns, round tree trunks, leafy leaves, angled branches, etc... I will get rid of blocks wherever I can without completely ruining performance. If you are curious, you can look through some of the links on the main mythruna site... heading to facebook or the wiki. I can't post links here.

  • Will this be free??

  • @TheLyraki1 No, eventually I will charge. Eventually.

  • Why this game is so EPİC?!

  • Guy, im into Java since 1 year ago, and I have much knowledge about it, except OpenGL and jME wich im studying now.

I'd love to help you with the project at the same time I learn game developing.

Please pm me if you are interested or something, thanks :)

Btw, I'd love this game much more than MC; just because I know that his will have what MC doesn't,and thats what I want.

  • @k3shanberk Hi, thanks for the kind words. It was nice chatting with you in game. Hopefully we will see you on the forums.

  • but why copypaste minecraft's blocky approach? you could create usual smooth terrains, which are smoothly changed when you dig dirt or sand.

from what I understand, this approach is better suited for MythRuna's ideology.

  • @alexgrinkov Yeah, but it's not so simple. That's what I tried six years ago and couldn't make it work.

Mythruna tries to bust out of its blockiness wherever it can but the basic block world comes with tons of benefits... and lets me get the rest of the game working. If I ever figure out a better way to do the terrain then those systems will transfer to Mythruna 2.0. :)

  • I hope you'll increase performance and stability, because for now it's slower than Minecraft and crashes often (but not as often as ScriptBlocks do, fortunately).

  • @QVear It's doing more than minecraft and so will probably always be a little slower. Though I've had some users report that it runs better... which is pretty baffling. :) There will be performance improvements as I can with a focus on that after alpha.

In the mean time, I can only fix the crashes that I hear about. If the game crashes when you are playing then it should generate an error-###.log file with useful info. Means of contacting me are on the mythruna wiki main page.

  • iim gonna be so picky if u have to move it like 5 degrees or somethin like that lol to make it perfect

  • I WANT IT

  • hey can you make a vid well and talk and explane what this is?

  • 1:51

wow~~~i never see minecraft-like-game that has that deep OCEAN

  • why people dislike this game?

i like it because the graphic is just AMAZING

  • Is the best game I have try, is unfinished but the best :D

  • Games like these are a "new" genre so to speak. Every game brings something different to the table. Everyone calls Terraria a Minecraft clone, but really it's just a 2D sandbox game with RPG elements. Saying that's like Minecraft is like saying every FPS from now on is a clone of CoD =P That's my spiel anyway xD

  • why so many dislikes? the developer clearly put a lot of effort into this...

and if your disliking it because it looks like minecraft: minecraft looks like infiniminer, but you don't dislike minecraft for that, do you?

  • @yinge101 theyre disliking because it looks better than minecraft

  • @ForgottenArmy99 probably

  • @yinge101 :) nice comment

  • I didn't know Minecraft and Oblivion were having a kid.

  • WoW, I see the similarities to MC, but thats all they are similarities. All the block building genre have them, because they are the same genre. I am considering getting this eventually. Well done mate.

  • Tell me, what will make this different to minecraft. I fell in love with terraria, since it combined my love with Minecraft and Metroidvanias.

If this is just minecraft but with HD textures and a few features that Minecraft mods already implement then you will have to try better

(not being a troll, just think of it from a marketing perspective and I am an average consumer. sell it. What will make this the must have over MC. Improved graphics doesn't count since graphics do not make games.)

  • @Argol228 This will be a role playing game with sandbox flexibility. The test builds are engine tests so they let you place any block wherever you want. The real game won't be like that (unless you turn all of the other cool stuff off). In the final version, players will be able to have fun even if they never want to dig or place a block. So maybe you want to build your own populated city (or dungeon) or just wander around and hunt dragons or whatever, that and everything in between.

  • @PaulSpeed well, nice =D

at least there's something that minecraft doesn't have, in addition of awesome graphic

  • The part at 0:39 doesn't work for me.

  • @drummerthing2 That was temporary until the in-game editor was ready. Now there is a custom editor that works much better and in both single and multiplayer. I have not posted any new videos because GameToker has been putting up such excellent ones. If you do a search you can find them as I do not think youtube lets me put links in comments. In game, hit 'b'

  • @PaulSpeed Thank you! and for anyone who is saying this is like Minecraft, it isn't! It has the same basic concept like all of the other new sandbox block building games. Good luck! This game looks like it could be awesome but not Minecraft.

  • When this game is done, will it cost any money to play? Because if it's free, then goodbye Minecraft.

  • @asdfzxc920 It will cost something eventually. I'm not at all trying to undermine the minecraft market.

  • fortress craft? lol it looks like that and minecraft but weirder lol good stuff tho if u make it have what minecraft needs people will buy it

  • are there npcs

  • @mrtimothyful Not yet. I'm trying to get some other systems in place first. Working on physics right now for the placeable objects, boats, and airships, etc.. NPCs will come in sometime after that.

  • @PaulSpeed When we can save? Also i'd pay only pay 10-15 bucks for such an game.Mainly because it is heavily HEAVILY inspired from Minecraft and i aleready have that. But if you do things like you said such as airplanes, boats, caves (Haven't played that long,Don't know if they're in) I'd gladly pay 20 dollars

  • @Heroes19991 Not sure what the "save" question means as things are already saved.

I'm working on physics right now, first for the custom placeable mini objects that are already in the game and then for larger objects like ships. There will be random caves, dungeons, and towns, villages, etc. in the final version. Caves will come soonest as that's the closest to being ready.

  • @PaulSpeed Save as save the world,so we don't lose our work

  • @Heroes19991 The world is saved always while you play... and has been for a while now. Since one of the very early releases. And on the server it's always saved, too.

  • @PaulSpeed uugh.Could you make an launcher (with automatic update)? It would be alot more convenient and more people would try it out.Make an launcher like Minecraft.

  • @Heroes19991 Well, I will get to all of that stuff eventually but I need to focus on things that minecraft doesn't already have. Plus, I don't want to force people to upgrade until things are more stable. After alpha.

  • are there npc

  • This reminds me of Sauerbraten's edit mode

  • @FreeFireFull Visually, I guess it's kind of reminiscent. Mechanically, this is just like creating structures in game except you spin a platform with WASD instead of walking around... and the end result is an object you can place in the world. So not so much the pinching and carving of what I've seen of Sauerbraten (never played with it personally). It looks like an interesting way of modeling, though.

  • @FreeFireFull Saw a different video and I sort of see what you are saying. Looks like an interesting game.

  • Agree with MrDpsc

  • This isn't even in alpha and almost has more content than minecraft.

The only things that makes minecraft a good game, are mods.

  • this has potential...

    lots..

  • You know what makes me so mad about all these comments?

This was made before Minecraft. And so fucking what if it wasnt? This guy made it himself, do you think YOU can do it? What about all the FPS clones? Exactly, they're all still successful. So shut the fuck up and research before posting.

    Assholes.

  • @pippintoon I know this comment is old but I guess it probably deserves a response just to set the record straight. While I have been coding for a long time and working on some kind of RPG for a long time, Mythruna was definitely made _after_ Minecraft.

Your other points are entirely valid, though. :)

  • @PaulSpeed Just disliked it. I was being too ragey. Man, I was a hateful kid.

  • OMG, another Mnecraft clone.

I swear there are going to be more of these out there than PAC Man clones by the time Minecraft leaves beta. I mean I know placing blocks isn't all that original but neither was ghosts chasing you around a maze...

  • @monsterzendog Minecraft is an infinimer clone...

This game will become original, give it some time

  • so wat if its copied off minecraft its got better suff and its simpler to build!!

    Minecraft is £20

  • Thanks again for the kind words, everyone. In case anyone cares, Mythruna has a fan page on Facebook if anyone wants to keep track of things from there.

  • AMAZING!

  • ok i try to start it but i get all the way to launch game then i click it it goes 0% then dissapears why???

  • @sirjogs I've had some users complain about similar problems and there is even a bug filed for it. When the game crashes, it usually dumps a 123456789-error.log in the game directory that has more information. (where the number is actually a unique number and not 1233456789)... that may tell me if it's the same issue or a different one. There is a link to the wiki on the main mythruna site and the wiki has a list of ways to contact me about issues if you don't want to continue this here.

  • awesome *-*

  • I wanted to do something like this as well!

If I could add a suggestion: Make a block that smooths out with the surface of the terrain so the world doesn't have to be navigated via continuous jumping. It could be generated with the terrain, and also crafted just in case you screw up with building and want to patch in some land. I was going to do something like that with my game.

  • @Ditherliss I too find it annoying that my character has to jump all the time. The current plan is to make climbing one meter high blocks automatic but at a slower rate... when I add proper support for automatically walking up steps, ladders, etc. this will be a part of that.

  • Really, this resembles Minecraft even more right now because it's just the engine test. There is no "game" built yet, just a test of the graphics that lets a user add or delete anything. Since this is very similar to the actual gameplay of Minecraft, combined with the look, it's going to look a lot alike.

Please give me some time to add the actual game parts before judging too critically.

  • The notch defence force needs to get that stick out of their ass. Minecraft is a clone of a clone; you might as well shit on Bungie or Valve for copying id's first person gameplay.

  • @GDhsfsvgful There is a difference between a clone and an improvment. I'd say he did less work than putting up a texture pack for minecraft!

  • (cough) minecraft (cough)

  • How do I download it? When I click the link, it shows me only the 'Coming Soon' screen and a few screenshots.

  • @Trexmaster12 Sorry about that. Download link is on the wiki which is linked on that page. Click Wiki and then "Engine Test Build".

  • @PaulSpeed

    Ah, thank you.

I wish you good luck and success.

  • Guys lay off. He didn't "Copy" minecraft anymore than Notch "Copied" Infiniminer

  • or, you know, you could be original.

  • Very nice!

Do you have pre-made buildings or structures that will randomly get placed in to the world?

  • @allink Yeah. That's the ultimate goal. Random towns and dungeons, etc.

  • @All those criticizing this for not being Minecraft: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SMOKING?! I play Minecraft too. This...this blows it completely out of the water, then hits it with grapeshot while it's in the air! The textures are amazing! The lighting is FANTASTIC! It has realistic water, slanted blocks, and the ability to CREATE YOUR OWN FUCKING BLOCK TYPES IN GAME!!!! Minecraft has nothing on this, and the only reason I'm not playing it right now is my PC being too old! O_Q

  • Well copy or not, this is fairly cool, and I like the new features. Maybe if you gave some credit to minecraft people wouldn't be giving you so much flak

  • @00ColdFusion00 I think I'll probably get flak no matter what I do. :) I don't know how long I had to listen to my buddies saying they didn't want to play Dark Forces because it was just Doom w/lasers. ;) Just want to make the game I'd play. I've tried to find a good entry point for nearly a decade, the closest I came was 5-6 years ago where I had a more realistic terrain engine but getting the rivers to carve through and stuff was too hard. MC showed that more limited graphics still work..

  • @PaulSpeed I totally dig the game, to be honest, if it came out before MC I would probably buy it/play it. That being said, I look forward to giving it a spin in the future.

  • Worst. Graphics. Ever.

  • @321Carl2000

    I fucking lol'd

  • This is cool, I like the ability to make complex objects with the temple, and also the ramp pieces.

  • This game is so unique! Oh wait...

  • Seems he's been working on this for over a decade -- whatever the case, this is hugely impressive. Great work, PaulSpeed.

  • i like the lighting... but it doesn't have the same minecrafty feel

  • A wild competitor has appeared.

  • I can't help but think Elderscrolls made into Minecraft...

  • @AshonSuperior That is a bit my inspiration. I wanted open-world Elderscrolls, essentially... though obviously different within the constraints of an open dynamic randomly generated world. The block world idea of minecraft was just my break-through for making it actually work.

  • Those hi res textures put me right off.

  • omg, ANOTHER minecraft clone...

  • I hope that this is a better game than minecraft. If not the competition should force innovation in both games, and I look forward to that.

  • This is beautiful.

  • I prefer minecraft but good work, ;) I love the water. ;) But well i haven't tried yet, does I need a good computer to play it?

  • @terminado I'm still trying to determine what the exact min requirements are. It seems to vary but you do need at least OpenGL 2 support. There is a topic in the Mythruna forum on the jmonkeyengine site where people have been posting performance and system specs.

It's only been in development for 2.5 months now so there is still more optimization to be done after I get some more features in.

  • Comment removed

  • @terminado It's sort of a bug and a feature. I will eventually remove it but it's convenient for getting around right now. I haven't setup a bug database yet so most people just post them to the jmonkeyengine forums. Or I guess youtube supports PMs too which just go to my gmail account.

  • @PaulSpeed OK I will go to the forums ;) XD iIdeleted the message to rewrite it better because my english isn't very good but you answer before I could finish.

  • @terminado :) Your English is a hundred times better than I write in any other language.

  • Love the water graphics and actual diagonal surfaces. I want to see more when you get further along in development!

  • More competition = good news for us. I'm all for minecraft clones and if one ever becomes better, I'll switch. Looks like Mythruna is off to a good start.

  • Looks great! The deep oceans and lightning makes it look amazing.

  • im beginning to regret purchasing minecraft

  • @ligyro :) Thanks for the kind words. Don't regret purchasing minecraft, though. It's cheap and fun. I bought it twice.

  • Nice!

  • What texture pack is that?

  • @BolanokTanoshi lol.

  • @BolanokTanoshi Heheh. Those are my own textures or a few _heavily_ modified ones from 15 years ago.

  • i dont get it.. why do you copy a game,

im not hating but i dont understand it

is it for study/ trying out stuff or do you just have the mind set that you can do it better?

  • @sakuniaben I have the mind set that I can do it differently. I'm writing the game that I want to play. I actually don't really want a block world but it's the quickest way to get where I want to go and have the flexibility that I need.

  • @sakuniaben It's not really copying a game, it's more making a game of the samegame type. Minecraft (which I assume you're referencing) is one of a genre of games, just like Starcraft is a RTS and Call of Duty is a FPS. Minecraft itself is a copy of Infiniminer, as admitted to by Notch.

Saying that you don't understand copying of a game is like saying you have no idea why Quake, the 1996 FPS copied Doom, the 1993 FPS. They are simply different games of the same genre.

  • @jowigo minecraft is a mix from 2 games

indeed infiniminer and dwarf-fortress if im right.

and minecraft isnt like a whole new game genre its a sandbox game. but this "game" is just to close to minecraft self. but still its work in progress (i hope) so if , like he says it isnt a minecraft copy/clone i hope to see that he will do it different because i dont see that much difference yet. only that the graphics are a bit more Polish t.

  • @sakuniaben I'm not saying one is better than the other, only that they are different. Highlights here include the already stated graphics, the ability to create your own objects on the fly, slopes and having objects be free from the constraints of blocks - you can see the table and chairs actually being placed at angles and freely. At the same time, it's missing creatures and the community that makes Minecraft what it is.

This is to Minecraft as Battlefield is to COD

  • @jowigo haha love the last line :) but yea cod an bf suck :D no offense :P

  • @sakuniaben notch kinda copyd minecraft also...

  • @xuarix read some posts ago, i know minecraft is a mix of too games but this is almost a clear copy

  • @sakuniaben Did you even play it? Judging what makes a game by looking at a video wont give you much insight.

    *whine mode on*

Everybody only copies DOOM. Vertexes, textures, pah! I want pigs flying out of my screen!

    *whine mode off*

  • @sakuniaben i think this is just a engine demo of engine

  • @sakuniaben A lot of people don't get it...

Right now it's a minecraft clone but this is not suposed to stay.

It's trying to became an mmorpg or something like that while also having a block environment like minecraft and minecraft stole it from infiniminer.

    It's just a cool idea

  • @sakuniaben I believe they aren't copying Minecraft, (If thats what you're referring to.) Because Minecraft made its own genre of Sandbox games and they are just making a game that has the same genre or feel of Minecraft. Of course this is just my opinion but that is how I feel about it.

  • Why copy minecraft? Why not combine your efforts with the minecraft creators to make an even more badass minecraft?

  • This is looking pretty goddamned cool. Keep it up, man. The more the merrier in the realm of craftlikes, as far as I'm concerned. I really like some of the stuff you've put in; like items movable off-grid, the animated water surface, and those 45 degree slopes that minecraft lacks so sorely.

  • This just doesn't have the appeal that Minecraft does.

  • @sim0magic Completely agree. Though I would love the warm glowing effects from this :D

  • @sim0magic

Don't forget that minecraft is now in its beta stage and nearly a finished game, while this is still pre-alpha

  • wow... you take shitty graphics in a whole different direction to minecraft. try turning down the bloom and making the textures a bit more consistent :P

  • Jmonkey uses only Java right?

  • @q8sauod Java talking to OpenGL. So like most 3D games, the graphics card is doing most of the work.

  • @PaulSpeed is java easy?

  • @q8sauod Depends on what you mean by easy, I guess. Writing games is kind of hard... no matter what language you use.

  • @PaulSpeed how many days will it take for a "Noob" programmer to learn Java? And what's the best tutorial/book ?

  • @q8sauod It would depend on how much programming you've already done. I saw a thread recently on the jmonkeyengine forums where someone asked a similar question. I'm not up to date on the latest "noob" Java books but I think there were some mentioned in that thread. You might see if there is anything useful there.

  • so what's your inspiration to make this? or is it just another minecraft clone?

  • @intoxicatedninja Some of this was covered in the interview linked on the Mythruna site.

For the last 10 years or so, I've been off and on working on sandbox type of worlds with more of a role-playing flair. Neverwinter Nights was lots of fun and I developed and designed add-on systems for it but the worlds were still very static. A flexible terrain engine was always the biggest problem with a completely open world. Minecraft just showed me that it didn't have to be photo-real to be useful.

  • I added a link to the description for any that want to try it.

  • Some of the visual style and world flexibility are similar to Minecraft. From there, it varies.

  • The graphics looks better than minecraft. I wouldn't mind playing this game. Although, I still don't like the "blocky" mountains in Notches minecraft. In your own version of minecraft, could you make smoother mountains, hills, valleys, etc? Like instead of Square blocks, you could use triangle blocks instead?

  • hm.. its like minecraft!?
