I have zero musical ability, but I have a fantasy where I am singing and playing this amazing song for an audience. My ex "friends with benefits" is in the audience, and realizes the talent and depth I have. And then I realize how pathetic I am for even thinking of this scenario.
i think it's kind of silly to assume just because a guy likes ani, that he must be gay (i am picking up this vibe from reading responses) There are lots of guys out there who are intellectual feminists.. does not mean they have to be part of a rally, but quite simpily appreciate& respect women, not only that but ani is very political. and blunt. who wouldn't appreciate her?for people who seem to claim to be so open minded, I find it kind of ignorant to think only gay males love ani...
@adub22able and to further complicate things there are straight guys, such as myself, who really enjoy ani, respect women and yet find feminists completely irritating.
haha.. yeah i have to agree it kinda frusterates me as well.. depending on where they stand and how pushy they are. Its the same as religion for me, it's a good idea, but people always find a way to ruin it.
@Cosbification I find the feminist stereotype generated by the common media irritating... and the feminists who basically use that word as an excuse to bitch incessantly about every man in the bar or every TV commercial, but that isn't a trait exclusive to feminists, that's just bitches, and the real feminists are some of the most necessary members of our society. It's ok - common mistake.
@FraterAnarkhos yeah it was the bitch next to me in high school art that ruined feminists for me. I just wanted to paint in peace and she just would not shut up.I had to start bringin headphones, just so I could get anything done. If her skills came even close to matching her pretensions I might forgave her her incessant rhetoric, but her attempts at art were just laughable and trite at best.
@FraterAnarkhos I don't think bitching about every man in the world constitutes feminism. I consider myself a feminist, and I don't "bitch" about men. I think the core idea of feminism is to want total equality for both women and men, and that involves demolishing the patriarchal system that hurts men just as much as women.
@saxophonejunkie09 I agree with you totally. I consider myself a feminist. I was basically saying the same thing you are. That there is a difference between being a feminist, and being a bitch.
My dad introduced Ani to me, shes just a beautiful poet and singer. Definitely a remarkable artist. Love her sound and how different it is. Not only girls listen to Ani, like i said, my dad does and hes not gay, happily married etc. just amazing Ani.
Ditto here fellas. Married hetero male who is in essentially the same boat. For some reason I decided to listen to Ani today after years of neglect and I'm awash with the same awe I had when I first heard "Live In Clip" years ago. Unbelievable!!
Anyone know if this version was ever released on a record? Previous poster suggested that it's off of 'Living in Clip' but I'm prettty sure they're two different versions. Also not the original from 'Ani Difranco'. Only other one I have in my collection on a record is the one from 'Canon' which is electric.
Females..? Who ever gave you the idea that females like Ani DiFranco??? Sheesh! =)
Male here, and this album/song/Ani in general were nothing less than a "rite of passage" for me. Here it is at least 4 (5?) years later, and I'm coming back for more once again. Ani is a poet, and she will go down in history as such. Beautiful, honest sentiment does not care about your gender. Sorry if it sounds mean; that was far from my intention.
I am a female, and I do not find that mean in the least. I find it right to the core of what Ani's music has always meant to me. That music, poetry, equality and life know no gender. Thank you :].
@spcnscan Wow, I swear I needed to double take to ensure that this wasn't something I posted a year ago. Really I knew deep down, but honestly, I am exactly the same as you. 6 years ago now, I stumbled across this song on a disk I'd burnt of my downloads, and a deep infatuation was born, regardless of the stylistic variations across her career. Now I'm at the stage where I listen infrequently, but each time I return, I'm aghast at how enthralling she is. Thank you for being a man like me.

i luv this song. my mom used to play this song ALL the time! i want it for my ring tone. i know all the words and every time i hear it i freak out and start singing it.
it's the story of how hard they tried! listening to the dialtone, Again, getting nowhere. and in each others shadows they grew less and less tall, duh! she's using both hands, dont close your eyes, pay attention. god!!!
I'm pretty sure it's about having your heart broken by a short-lived relationship... but yeah I know, it doesn't make a whole lot of literal sense and I feel sad every time I listen to it.
It is the story of an intense and probably short-lived love affair that was highly sexual, and the frustration in trying to keep the relationship together.
"I am getting nowhere with you and I can't get through"
Well, I always thought of the song on 2 levels: the more obvious level of it having sexual connotations...using both hands writing grafitti on her body...don't think I need to expand on that lol And of course the desperate attempt to salvage a fledgling relationship, you have to use both hands, you can't just sit back and not do the work required... anywho, that's what I got out of it ;)
you cant change the world by hating men..

I just ordered Anis' Best of songbook. My birthday present to me.
If there is a better poet of the day, I must hear it. Never thought anyone could compare with Rod McKuen until I heard Ani.
When Ani speaks, I listen
Thank you for posting!

oh both pans, please use both pans...
