Actually, I'm not poking the duck, just pretending. Don't quite remember the logic to that.... But no, it wasn't reluctant to be held; we think he had just hatched, he was dirty and weak, and he had ants crawling on it. This video is after we fed it and cleaned it, so he's doing well now.
What a sweet little guy. You did a good thing. How will he know where to migrate to in winter? Do you think he'll be able to join some other ducks or do they let outsiders in?
We didn't see it's mom in the area, and we did look. When we got it, it was also weak and dirty, we didn't even think it would live on the car ride home. We took this video after it ate and cleaned itself up.
last I found a baby mallard that was a day old. He WAS abandoned. 2 grown ducks started attacking it, so we took him out of the water, planning to call the animal rescue this morning. We kept him bundled up and tried to give him water to drink. Unfortunately he died in the middle of the night. I'm thinking he was already very sickly (thus why the mother left him behind), because he was never hyper at all and he wouldn't hardly opened his beak.
I'm sorry to hear about your baby duck, but like you said, it probably was very sick. We were worried this one wasn't going to make it through the night, we were so happy when it started cleaning itself and running around.
You know if you see a baby duck, (or any kind of baby animal) alone and its mother isn't near, your first reaction is probably ''OMGSH ITS MOTHER ABANDONED IT''
But the mother could be just out getting food, and usually she'll hid her babies in a bush. Or maybe in your case, she/he could of wandered off, but his/her mother could of been close by.
Don't think we didn't look; and it wasn't hiding in a bush, it was just out in the middle of the park. I appreicate your concern, though, and I assure you it's in a sage place with other ducks.
Do you know what kind of duck is it ??....probably a Mallard or a Muskovy..

Yeah, Its true.
Acually the father does nothing for the babies, and the mother always leave them alone.

not all the time... birds are actually better parents then other animals. its just easier for them to get separated cause they are such easy prey

my aunt had one like that.

Ahhh what a cutey! Its cool you found it a safe place to grow up in. Some people would try and raise it, but its better a wild animal.

The place we brought him to had other baby ducks his age (and all ages), so I'm sure he'll fit in fine. :D

Yeah, you can't tell by appearance when they're this young. When they get older, then you can tell.
