Alex.  I would say that any investment by the USA in a country is going to result in business and jobs for the native people of that country. I disagree that "blocking" rivers is a feasible option (the water needs to go somewhere) and if it was possible, I believe it would probably be an act of war.

I think it would be better if the kurdish government was more of a team player with the iraqi government though. i think the best course would have been to form a federal gov't, like that of the US. There could be a "United States of Iraq", with local governments catering to their local people's specific needs. But i also think there should be a central Iraq government, that should be comprised of representatives from those local states.

I think that, in general, for thousands of years (the ancient Egyptians traded grain for lumber from Lebanon, etc..), countries have needed support of other countries. International trade benefits all countries involved. Otherwise, there is not much of a market for all of the goods or raw materials produced.

I think that outside investment would help Iraqi Kurdistan provide a lot of food which it can trade with other parts of Iraq and with the surrounding countries. Keep in mind that domestic food production is one of the areas that the middle east lacks development in. Therefor I think there would be a strong domestic market for food production, but the means for mass production and processing arent really there at the moment.
