Superb doc. Hershal Walker, Bo Jackson, and Marcus Dupree were the three most gifted college backs I ever saw.
Not stated in this doc is one of the things that ruined his career was old astroturf. He hurt his knees and ankles on it at OK, also playing in the USFL in NO, and finally blowing a knee out on Portland. All fields had the old style astroturf that hurt a lot of players, and ruined his knees. By the time he got to LA's grass, it was too late.
This is the best 30 for 30 I've ever seen. Man Marcus seems so humble and that is so refreshing to see. I'm a 24yr old man, and I got teary eyed when he spoke about his brother.
What really touched me about this 30 for 30 was that after marcus was cut by the Rams he said it didn't bother him. He had accomplished his goal of reaching the NFL and making a comeback. Like he said in the 30F30, he breathed the air and took in the moment when he was in the NFL. An Amazing thing any high school player should listen to.... don't take any moment for granted. Glad i'm not the only one who can't get this story out of my head. I loved it.
i hated this one. god gave him so much, and he took it and became a cocky asshole who didnt work for anything. he didnt do shit at practice and when you get older, and you dont stretch, ur begging to get injured. he was an ignorant and he pisses me off
@loggizzo Lol. This is the prime example of you not applying any logic. He didn't take his talents and throw them away - at least on purpose. He had a million people talking in his ear manipulating him into making decisions. You are only 18 years old you shouldn't be having that much pressure on your shoulders, and just do what he's always enjoyed - playing football. Instead he had to deal with the media, rev fairley using him for money, high expectations, etc. It's not as easy as you think.
Just watched this for the second time on espn. I just wanted to say that it is very clear that Marcus was a very good person who came from a loving family. And that is the most important thing that we can learn about this man.
my pop watched him play ball in high school and said that he saw the best ball player ever in history. "better than any pro player would ever be" he said. Wish I saw him play in real life.
he wore #22, if he would have played longer in the NFL he would have broken Emmit smith's record, he was the Adrian peterson before adrian peterson. he is the most talented person in history and in all the world. no disrespect to my chicago boy Walter payton, emmit or Jim brown. he would be the greatest of all time
yeah this hasto be one of my favorite 30 for 30s. but just the fact that he left oklahoma and before that was getting all full of himself thinkin he can just put on 10lbs fat and be as amazing as he was before (which he was very close) was just stupid. i guess thats what makes this such a remarkable story though. if he woulda stayed at okl. he wouldnt have been as severly injured as he was and so on.. just wow.

just watched this 30 for 30 film again today.... definitely the most touching story. as much as marcus could have blamed people, because there were clearly people to blame for so many problems he had, throughout the film he took the high road. he never once looked to feel sorry for himself, extraordinary athlete but an even more extraordinary person. 6'3, 240lbs. running 100m in 9.5secs, benching 400lbs - wow and that was at 17.
favorite part of the 30 for 30 series is they had the ability to make you sad because they were so touching. when has espn ever done something like this
I was so happy when he got to play for two years. I had tears running at the end when he was talking about his brother and mother. Very sad, but very good.
OMG just imagine if he didn't mess his ankle up during that game against Arizona. The possibilities of him running over 400+ yards would've been insane! That's QB passing yard numbers, not RB stats. Wow. SMH. But damn coach was too hard on the kid, wanted to blame him because of his weight. Wasn't 245 running yards enough? -_-
My first OU game was when I was 6 years old in 1982. To this day, the run he ripped off against Missouri that's in this film, runs over a safety and outsprints the rest of the secondary, is seared into my mind. I've NEVER heard a crowd reaction like that before, and I seriously doubt that I'll ever experience that again.

I don't care what anyone says, I saw this guy play back in the day, he was like Jim Brown & Eric Dickerson rolled into one, he was the truth. He had the power and strength of Brown, an the speed an running style (upright) of Dickerson, an he is one of the nicest guys you'll ever want to come across, if he had an angrier demeanor, OMG, he would've been an even greater football player than he was. I'm glad he is the way he is, he's a real genuine human being because of his low key temperament...
It frustrating when people make Marcus into a martyr. The guy didn't have heart until his ability was gone. The film showed how he didn't maintain weight and how he ducked out at every turn he could. Just because he was surrounded by mooches and he had no father figure doesn't excuse his poor choices. It is a sad story but lets not say he could have been the best ever if he didn't get hurt. He would have had to stay healthy and develop a heart and will...Think of the greats. All have talent

This documentary had me in tears myself. A lot of the stuff on ESPN has been garbage (very east coast bias too) but the 30 for 30 was the best thing I have seen them do before. I can't wait for the documentary Raising Hell to come out about Steve Bartmen
really every sport has that couldve been the best ever how would you know that by setting a rushing record in one game what about the rest of his college career what happen just faded that happen to athletes all the time . I didnt get the big story Mauric clarett rushed over 1000 yards won the national championship in is freshmen year he couldve been the best ever easily said hes another player that peaked then faded away . :)
really theres a blue chip player every year coming out of high school . Thats the medias job hype up players to be the greatest ever thats all that was he got to college and didnt want to put the work into being a great football player on the college level 2 years at oklahoma he quit . What was so good about that story all i got was he was great in the high school leverl but injury prone and forgettable at college and professional level The End.
your ignorant man. you need to watch the actuall movie to understand. this kid wouldve been the greatest running back ever if he had a little bit of guidance. dupree had no father, to many people took advantage of him and his talents due to the lack of father guidance at home. not to mention switzer completley fucked over his college career. dupree ran 246 yerds by the end of the first half during the fiesta bowl, after being injured.... shut up you dumb fuck
@jake76oh he wasn't just any blue chip player.. he scored the most touchdowns ever in high school, ran 100 yds in 9.5 secs, benched 400x10, he was a physical freak theres no one like that today. also he got like 1200 yds or w/e in only 7 starts. unlike maurice clarett, he never peaked he couldve been even better
I'm not really a football fan but this is one of the best stories I have ever seen.It brought tears to my eyes..We need more players like him that really loves the game & not just the fame !!!
Barry Switzer was the number one person to blame for his fall from grace, outside of his own internal issues. Certainly a story of hubris and wasted talent.
The saddest thing in this world is wasted talent. yes he did succeed and excel but not to his full potential. the title says it all. There were a lot of huge factors that tied in to why he wasn't the greatest of all time. his college choice was an obvious one. This is one of the best documentaries and stories I've heard, anyone who has a soul can feel the sadness when they watch this. I held back my tears when I watched this. Wish you the best Marcus.
marcus is a dime a dozen his career in college was short lived he was all attitude and it cost him a career . I honestly dont see the reason for this player to be picked for an episode . I yawned I thought there were better stories to pick from than his.
@jake76oh your opinion is clearly based upon some internal bitterness or emotional conflict. numbers don't lie, he was the best of his (and others') age group during his (and others') time, stop being a turd.
Probably the saddest sports story i have ever heard. towards the end of this 30 for 30 when it shows his personal weight room and all of his trophies and game balls with OU stamped all over them just collecting dust, it almost brought tears to my eyes. to think of this god and how much he accomplished so quick, and how he lost it even quicker was mind blowing to me. after watching the 30F30, i cant get the story of marcus dupree off of my head. i suggest every football nut watch this, amazing.
No doubt but you have to remember that Troy Aikman rolled out of Oklahoma after Switzer was fucking with him too. Switzers dumb ass even wanted to transform Aikman into an option QB. When Switzer came to Coach Dallas Aikman called Jerry Jones up and staged a meeting so he could let Switzer know face to face that he wasn't gonna fuck with him like he did when he was a College kid!
love this story...remember it like it was yesterday....he was like a God when he ran the ball....amazed at how at peace he is with his past...a lesson for all of us...
Although his career was cut short, Marcus Dupree ultimately was a success. He was able to play professional football. He could've easily quit after suffering the knee injury. But he worked his tail off to make it back. I only wish I had even an ounce of his will.
Although his career was cut short, Marcus Dupree ultimately was a success. He was able to play professional football"
What's not really announced in this story too much is how much Walter Payton who was a fellow Mississippian played into that. Payton personally came to Dupree's home and motivated him into making a comeback.
Once again some so called advisor steals money from an unprotected young athlete. The fact that Rev Fairly wasn't interviewed from prison might be the BIGGEST crime here.
I think both sides were wrong I think Marcus could have been a little thicked skinned then again after OU's Fiesta loss Switzer tore into Dupree when he should tore into the whole team for losing that game. Especially when Dupree was their best player in that game.
@loveforthegame31 It's from a show on ESPN called 30 for 30 "The Best That Never Was." It first aired about 2 months ago, but they have been replaying it a few times since. You can watch it here to if you want. It's in 11 parts. Search "ESPN 30 For 30 The Best That Never Was Part 1/11.
@NathanIVV um yea i did actually... put myself through one of the top colleges in the world... Look at this guy - if you're a top recruit in football in the US you're treated like a demi-God..
I do appreciate that he isn't complaining though - good on him
@NathanIVV I don't want to downgrade your achievements and accolades but to be blunt...so what. Many people put themselves through colleges (whether top or bottom of the barrel) and they don't unnecessarily have to let everyone know about it by using it as a foundation of an example or to make a point.
I agree with you. I am glad he is not bitter. In the end when he shed a tear...I'm wondering did he shed a tear because of this brother, mother, or thoughts of what could have been.
Just caught this on ESPN. Marcus struck me as a very talented athlete, but a very insecure young man. It seemed like he wasn't prepared to handle the big stage and everything that goes with it. Very sad in a way. Regardless, I'm happy that he is happy with his life now. How many of us have made decisions that curtailed our own potential. I know I have. I think a lot of people can relate to Marcus's story. I can in my own way. God bless Marcus Dupree.
Man, the scene at the end where they bring him back to his high school field, and Marcus says, "Well I think my mom liked watching me play more than anyone." and then the documenter says, "I thought reggie was your biggest fan." had me crying the same way he started crying man.... touching film
this is number two. Def had me gettin teary but the Len Bias one is the absolute best and most emotional. theres never been a worse tragedy than that. the greatest basketball player dies just short two days before draft day. I loved this story just as much its almost number one.
I only saw about the last half of this one on ESPN Classic. Would somebody be so kind as to put the entire 30 for 30 program about Marcus on YouTube.com?
I went to college with a guy who is from the same city as Dupree. He would go on and on about this guy and we would be like "That guy who got cut by the Rams????" And we would alway make fun of the guy for jocking Dupree.
After seeing this....I now realize how dumb we were to this guys greatness. And yes....what a sad story.
this man was BEAST back in his day. If he were to have join the NFL, NO question he woulda raped the league up so bad that it would've asked to have his babies. the man would've been the Michael Jordan of the game. Peterson runs a fucking 4.38 at 217 lb yet THIS man ran a 4.3.40, lifting 400 lb, and had a mean mean stiff arm?
I just saw this 30 for 30 on Espn, Switzer was a total asshole to this young man! He had lighting in a bottle and let it slip away. There was a lot to him going there though he was like a piece of meat to those recruiters! He would have been so good had they not put so much pressure on him its terrible... GOD BLESS
I love the end, i expected everything to be depressing, but he was happy at the end, unfortunately no one gave him a chance, they all wanted instant success.
Amazing story!! Too young and pulled in too many directions!! I hope someone makes a movie of his life so that he can get some monetary reward. Does anyone know what happened to his brother?

your ignorant man. you need to watch the actuall movie to understand. this kid wouldve been the greatest running back ever if he had a little bit of guidance. dupree had no father, to many people took advantage of him and his talents due to the lack of father guidance at home. not to mention switzer completley fucked over his college career. dupree ran 246 yerds by the end of the first half during the fiesta bowl, after being injured.... shut up you dumb fuck
CanLaxKid 1 year ago
@jake76oh he wasn't just any blue chip player.. he scored the most touchdowns ever in high school, ran 100 yds in 9.5 secs, benched 400x10, he was a physical freak theres no one like that today. also he got like 1200 yds or w/e in only 7 starts. unlike maurice clarett, he never peaked he couldve been even better

@jake76oh yea i bet you could break herschel walkers touchdown record since thats so easy you were right

@jake76oh Dime a dozen? 100 yard dash in 9.5 seconds at 230lbs. What a thoughtless statement!
lochwharral 1 year ago
@jake76oh your opinion is clearly based upon some internal bitterness or emotional conflict. numbers don't lie, he was the best of his (and others') age group during his (and others') time, stop being a turd.

Probably the saddest sports story i have ever heard. towards the end of this 30 for 30 when it shows his personal weight room and all of his trophies and game balls with OU stamped all over them just collecting dust, it almost brought tears to my eyes. to think of this god and how much he accomplished so quick, and how he lost it even quicker was mind blowing to me. after watching the 30F30, i cant get the story of marcus dupree off of my head. i suggest every football nut watch this, amazing.

cracka ass barry switzer was hatin on the god.

@0sAndOnes

Although his career was cut short, Marcus Dupree ultimately was a success. He was able to play professional football. He could've easily quit after suffering the knee injury. But he worked his tail off to make it back. I only wish I had even an ounce of his will.

What's not really announced in this story too much is how much Walter Payton who was a fellow Mississippian played into that. Payton personally came to Dupree's home and motivated him into making a comeback.

you are so correct dude(alwill4709) the Rev is the reason for this young mans downfall

Once again some so called advisor steals money from an unprotected young athlete. The fact that Rev Fairly wasn't interviewed from prison might be the BIGGEST crime here.

He could have been so great for a long time had it not been for people whe exploited him.. A shame
cowboysfan1964 1 year ago

I do appreciate that he isn't complaining though - good on him
FlozelltheHotell 1 year ago

XagentXnazX 1 year ago

GOD BLESS
