  • Yeah, this isn't a year and a half later.

If you're still trying the weight loss thing -- which I'm also doing -- counting calories is ...good AND bad. When you keep tabs on what you eat, you obsess over food--so you can count calories all day and eat everything in sight later. (Check out the junkfoodscience blog for a relevant study.) It's better to learn to assess portions naturally, or use a plate division rule (1/4 meat, 1/4 grain, 1/2 fruit and veg) when serving yourself. Good luck :)

  • I fear the scale. Whenever I diet, I stick with it for like, a week or two and then I super fail as well. It really breaks me down and I'm still kinda depressed about it :/

Not really advice, I guess, but it's empathy.

  • i love you! you rock!

  • omg i'm so afraid of the scale!! so afraid, that everytime i go to the doctor, my blood pressure is up because I know I'm gonna get weighed...serious! so, i know what you mean!

  • im afraid of the scale too! its like i try so hard to lose weight that whole week and when i weigh myself im either the same weight or gain like a pound, it gets me super upset and it makes me wanna just be like f*** it! so far ive lost only 15lbs 15 more to go!

  • Drink like abuncha glasses of water before you eat that way you eat less because the water fills you up!

  • Hey Justine! I'm not really good at giving advice for this type of stuff but for me my laziness always trumps my hunger. So when it's late and I'm hungry I'm always lazy to eat and I just go to sleep. Doing this could help with not eating late at night and just get you to go to sleep earlier. anyway the hell I think you're doing good and it's obvious that your trying. Stick wit it girlfriend cuz you can do it!!!

  • In high school, I did volleyball for two years. The 2nd year, I had been slacky during the summer and my mom decided that "Daily Doubles" would be the start of my diet. Two weeks before school started, practice started and we did it twice a day and ran at least a mile. After the first week my mom weighed me and I had gained 10 lbs. She freaked out; said mean things and I've never weighed myself with her again. The next week, I sneaked onto the scale and I had lost 20 lbs.

  • I am SO afraid of the scale. Don't worry.

  • I feel the same damn way about the scale! I have not weighed myself in over 2 months since i've started losing weight. I've been taking my measurements and they are going down, but I feel like if I look at the scale and the number isn;t where I want it, Ill take it out on a pan of brownies or something.

  • I always fail at home for the same reasons...I try not to shop when I'm hungry or else I'll cave and buy a bunch of junk, and try to buy lots of fruits at the farmers market because I crave sweets. So mainly I just try not to have too many bad foods around the house.

I rarely eat fast food because it's so gross...but if I ever feel a craving coming on I just imagine how gross my body feels afterward. I always feel like I have rocks in my stomach and a layer of grease coating my esophogus. Yuck

  • whenever I have really junky food, I notice my FACE feels greasy too... ergggg

  • I lovve you.

    :)

Good luck on your journey, honey.

    I'm on it too,.

I love this chann. because a LOT of us ladies look up to you guys,

And to have you losing weight with us is touching.

Kind of contouring the face behind the make up. :)

showing life isnt materialistic or something someone else might think.

I love and appreciate your time, Justin. Always have.<3

  • thank you :)

  • i think forget about the weight u are loosing in lbs if u anxious about it, maybe just take body measurements to see if anythin coming off, it may suit u better?

fingers crossed for u anyway x

  • Don't worry i cried cause I gained a pound. A friend told me to hide my scale for a few weeks.

  • Get on the ball Justine! You can do it! I'm on this journey too. You know what to do, you lost weight before! Let's get out of Torrid clothes (expensive shit) and shop at Forever 21 instead! LOL.

  • torrid clothes are expensive but the reason why they are expensive is because they spend money to research fit.. unlike OTHER plus size brands. just a little fyi from someone who works for the company.

  • Ya, I know. I work there too as a manager, lol. Justine knows that, lol.

  • i LOVE the z. cavaricci denim, it fits WONDERFULLYYYY!

  • i think out of all of our stuff the denim is really what keeps people coming back!

  • you know I love torrid, but good god It'd be nice to shop at forever21 instead!

  • if you are happy not getting on a sacle then don't you can always mark your progress by how your clothes feel, scales are just numbers it is how you feel in your skin that matters. Take little steps and when you get used to one add another sometimes cutting everything out at once is not always the right thing to do.

  • Buy a smaller dinner plate it is amazing how much that helps as it decieves the brain lol and maybe get tomorrows dinner ready today so you don't go wild and eat tonnes when you get home. Hope I was some help and stop feeling so bad you are doing your best that is all you can do

    :0)

  • You should try Weight Watchers... I am not trying to advertise for that program or anything, it's just my mom tried it and it worked really well for her. It's a big commitment, though.

KEEP IT UP, JUSTINE!!! WE ARE ALL SUPPORTING YOU!!

  • wait, I'm confused. Why is it titled "Hell the Hell" this week? Cause it's been hell? =[

Keep it up Justine, you're doing great!

  • She says "the hell" a lot after some words. It's just kind of like a Justine-ism, if you catch my drift.

  • No, I know that. But it's usually titled "HEALTH the Hell" and this week it's titled "HELL the Hell"

  • I haven't gotten on a scale in a LONG ASS TIME. It's not a number, its about if you FEEL good. And I hope you are feeling a lot better in these past 9 weeks, but don't be scared and only give us numbers if you want. You're doing freakin' great :-)

  • I have lost 30 pounds in about 2 months. What I did was this:

    Water ONLY water thats it.

breakfast special k or egg whites.

lunch one sushi roll and some tofu soup

dinner boneless skinless baked chicken and salad with minimal dressing

i snack in between with frozen fruit or nuts.

i also do about 45 mins to an hour of cardio a day

I know you can do this Justine! Good luck!

  • to eliminate overeating i cut up fruit and i freeze it then when in really hungry and i have to fix myself sum dinner i just snack on that, that helps me to really stop my hunger and then i can continue to make healthy choices. and i have an ongoing battle with the scale too, it frustrates me to see when i don't loose any weight

  • I WANT NUMBERS AND I WANT IT NOW!

  • Hey :)

The way I do it the whole one-day-at-a-time. I dont forward plan too much, unless ofcourse its about dinner etc. But yeah how I do it is:

I keep a food diary & count the calories that way but also I want some chocolate I will go and get chocolate because if I dont I'll end up eating wayyy more of it than I really need.

But yeah eat healthier -dont go all health freak straigh away, bring yourself in a bit at a time- and dont be afraid to give yourself a treat here and there.

    -B :)

  • The two things that have helped me the most over the years are keeping a food journal & daily weighing. I know...ppl say not to. But for me, it helps put things into perspective. You eat bad, it's gonna be a couple days of water weight and you see the longer term trend that you want. And I know this is going to sound silly, but I also put a silly sticker on my calendar when I have a great day. One for exercise & one for eating right! Yes, I buy stupid glittery stickers & they make me happy! Ha!

  • Im scared of the scale, I havent owned one in over ten years. I had an ED as a teenager and part of my recovery is to just ignore the numbers.

Ive always been a night eater, but I learned that part of the reason I crave at night is that I (often) dont get enough sleep. My body craves sugar and carbs in the evenings to try to boost my energy for when Im up most (nights!). It doesnt matter how much I do or dont eat during the day, as soon as night hits, Im starving. Bad sleep habits FTL.

  • well i have always been told ( and live by it ) eat like a king for breakfast , then through out the day ur meals get smaller if ur allowed let say 2000 cal (10 cal -per pound) u split that up lets say 600 cal for breakfast 400 cal for snacks 500 cal lunch and 500 cal supper work for me and a lot of ppl i know it keeps u burning and ur metabolism revved and ur body happy , scales who cares it how YOU feel don't get anxious , it will rune ur glorified accomplishments u and us so deserve

  • 1. Thanks the hell for the shout out.

    2. You DO know how to lose weight. You said it yourself the other week. We all know how, it's just a matter of doing it.

When I'm REALLY hungry (esp. @ night) and I'm on the verge of bingeing I get a bar (fiber one, south beach, slim fast, w/e. Some healthy ass bar) and eat it with 24 oz water. Bite then drink, bite then drink...so I finish both @ the same time. Then it's 25 mins later, I'm bloated w/ H2O and NOT hungry for ANYTHING.

  • The best way to lose weight I've found is to really listen to your body. Eat what you want, when you're hungry. Don't count calories, count your chews... 20 chews before swallowing. Put your fork or spoon or sandwich, w/e down between bites. Ask yourself if you're still hungry. If you don't know, guess, and if you're hungry later, eat again. Also, don't do anything else (tv, computer, etc) while eating. You're less likely to overeat if you're really paying attention to what you're eating.

  • p.s. I need to take this advice... my goal for the week is to do exactly what I just said every time I eat.

  • I started this 90 day work out program 4 weeks ago and it has been nothing but PASS! It is called P90X, look up some videos on YouTube about it. In about 3 weeks I lost 12 pounds, it has some stupid meal plan, but I don't follow it, I just eat healthier. You don't have to leave home to do it, which was my biggest problem, You just pop in a different DVD every day and follow along. Check it out!

  • A lot of people say they can track progress by their face...my indicator is my collarbone. If you look at some of your other videos, you can tell that the collarbone is more pronounced now.

Forget the scale...do you feel better? How are your clothes fitting?

  • Good snacks through the day:

8-10 almonds, 4 oz 100% grape juice, 8-10 walnuts, 1 TBS all natural peanut butter on 1 slice whole grain bread, rolled up good quality (low salt) cold cuts, cold grapes, cottage cheese (2 OZ), pineapple chunks (great when cold), celery, low sodium v8 juice. to name a few for now.

  • One day at a time. Keeping a food journal is powerful too. I found this resource to be amazing: 2009 CalorieKing Calorie, Fat and Carbohydrate Counter. It's a little pocket book.

  • oh and I have scale issues.

I have a problem with thinking that I'm doing good - checking the scale - seeing that it either hasn't changed or has gone up and I inevitably scarf my brains out afterwards - because I've like suddenly decided it's too hard or taking too long or not worth it or whatever.

sometimes the scale is such a great feedback of progress --- but sometimes I just care about how my clothes look and feel on. and I don't need to know the number.

  • Again, I've found the best approach is get a cup of coffee in you (I use half n half and sugar in the raw). Then go for a power walk for at least 30 mins. Going on a basically empty stomach causes the bod to hit into the fat stores. Within 45 mins of the workout try to get a complex carb and protein in while the windows are open. I like 1/2 a sweet potato PLAIN and a hard boiled egg. Also, you stay burning for a few hours after.

  • What helps me, scale wise, is the Tanita Iron man scale. Gives all sorts of info about body fat, water weight, bone weight, muscle mass, even has metabolic age.

For me, I've come to understand it's NOT about total weight. I started lifting weights and actually lost two whole sizes and stayed the EXACT SAME weight. Muscle weighs more than fat and takes up half the "real estate" sort of speak :)

  • read Dr. Beck's Diet Solution - it's an awesome book - that isn't really a diet - but it tries to teach you how to re-train the way you THINK about food and eating...

that food is never an emergency, etc.

when I re-read it a little each day - I'm totally on track. it puts your head in a good place for that weightloss/healthy living is a lifestyle - not a temporary thing - and when I don't read it -- I go into F#@!-it Mode - which is leads to total fail days.

  • keep trying! :)

  • i'm all full of fail too! it's like, "hey.. i've been pretty good, i can afford to have some junk......" and then it flipping shows up on the scale. i guess, just say no? sounds so easy.....

  • Sounds annoying but maybe try making meals ahead of time for when you get home from work? You could cook them at a time when you aren't starving, so maybe you'd be more apt to make it entirely healthy.

  • lol not to scare you ...but I used to be scared of the scale and never weighed myself. And then when I did weigh myself I had gained about 40 pounds! I lost it back but now I get on the scale every week or so..I force myself lol

  • I know how you feel...I've been failboating with my diet recently.

I've gained and lost a lot of weight since high school, and all I can really say about it is that I can't lose weight without exercising. I can starve myself all day long, and I'll just feel hungry and frustrated, but adding in 30 minutes of exercise a few times a week made the weight come off soooo much faster.

This whole thing can be frustrating, and I don't like getting on the scale either. :-(

  • I am afraid of the scale too! I only go on it if I haven't eaten for like a whole day or I've actually eaten something light and healthy. Keep in mind that you can only know,if you check. Also keep in mind that to face your troubles going to the scale, you have to work hard to get the right answer (it sounds cheezy I know) So if you walk, hike,or do something that involves moving your legs, you'll probably lose some weight the hell :)

  • I guess I'm kind of scared of the scale, in that if I haven't lost anything one week then I might just give up on everything. So far I have been pretty good for seven weeks, but I am terrified that I am just going to give up any day now - it's like I don't trust myself because I have given up so many times in the past and I just want to lose this damn weight.

Anyway, maybe try weighing yourself once a month instead of once a week? It might help...

  • Being hungry is weighloss' worst enemy. Maybe you need to focus on food that gives you a feeling of being full for a longer period of time. You know that, but anyway :)

Another HUGELY important thing, is that you need to eat breakfast. It pumps up your motabolism for the rest of the day. And maybe you need to eat a little more calories, that you do know? Just for a while, to get the "fulness" feeling back on track.

    Best of luck :)

  • I HATE THE SCALES.

no seriously, whenever i weigh myself then move the scale and weigh myself its different. its like..uhh

  • I hate the scale too b/c I put so much emphasis on losing, and if I don't, I become extremely disappointed. I am the same way with being good all day, then coming home and ruining it b/c I'm so hungry! I also eat late at night, but I read somewhere that if you go ahead and brush your teeth you will be less likely to cheat late at night. (I guess b/c of the taste, plus who wants to rebrush their teeth once they've already done it?)

  • Scale Fail! Lol.

  • The scale can be my enemy. I'm so use to it though. So yea I do weigh myself..and get discouraged. =/ Just have to keep working at it though and I might like the scale soon. lol

  • let me just say that its all in your head, like you are the only one that can motivate yourself to stay eating healthy. that has happened to me where im doing good and at night all hell breaks lose lol, but ive learned to control myself by eating a healthy snach along with getting my mind off of it. if not then your just gonna want to eat more and more. i struggle to keep my weight down because i want to stay in shape another idea is exercise, just be positve =]

  • Hey Justine!

I experience the same thing that you do, and yes I'm scared of the scale too =X

Sorry I don't have any advice but I'm starting to think that weight loss has a lot to do with mental strength as well.

P.S. #s are not necessary at all, unless You want to tell =)

  • you are not the only one I hate the scale I feel like if I am trying to lose weight and I step on and I have gained weight that I will give up and have a cookie, lol. I usually just measure my waist neck and thighs it seems dumb but it works for me.

  • i'm scared of it too justine, no worries! although this week i had the swine flu and lost over 11 pounds :/ but that's really horrible advice to say "just get the swine flu and those pounds will melt away" But I was technically on a clear liquid diet. It probably....definitely is not recommended but hey. keep it up!! dont be scared :)

  • yeaaaaaaah. you know.

  • Ya know what has a lot of calories? The a-a-a-a-a-alcohol!

  • Youre right Brooke. My mom used to drink a lot of Martinis

  • i'm always a fail at losing weight. -____-;; and i also have am afraid to step on the scale.

  • MMmmm grrrl! I haven't gone on the scale in well over a year...I go by how my clothes fit. Its fairly accurate....cop out? Yes. Fail? No.

  • No, we dont need numbers unless you want to give out that information. That is personal. I will be rooting for you Justine :)

  • havent gone*

  • I feel the SAME EXACT way! I have gone on the scale in three weeks because of that very fear. Do you eat when you feel depressed and bored? I do that too?

  • I weigh myself everyday even though I do nothing most of the time. I seem to think by magic I lose some more weight.

  • im afraid of the scale too... you arent alone, justine!

  • I do the same thing. I eat good during the day and then I get starving at night and there goes my day.

  • u could eat smaller meals more often and that will also keep u from over eating and keep u filled longer

  • im terrified of the scale lol and i've done what u done lol

  • Make sure you eat breakfast. Cliche, but it should make you less hungry during the day. And have small healthy snacks throughout the day, like fruit, veggies, etc.

  • remember you only need to exercise for 20 mins at minimum a day! and dont diet it doesn't work. when you crave something eat it slowly untill you dont want it anymore. focus on the food dont eat while watching tv or anything. it works trust me

  • guzzle a huge glass of water whenever you feel a craving..fills ya up for a bit and it helps to clear ya out. :o)

  • Okay, you need to google "The Gabriel Method". The no diet way to lose weight - guaranteed. And just look at Jon Gabriel's own before and after photos! Amazing! (Oh, and yes, my own experience proves it works).

  • the scale is only one way of measuring progress. it is important, but not the end-all-be-all measurer of dieting success. inches and % body fat are other ways to measure your progress. little dietary slip-ups are fine. you can't expect yourself to be on point 24/7. if you think you have reached a plateau, you might consider adding more exercise. exercise could help reinvigorate your weight loss. you work at a mall, right? try walking on your breaks, if you have any. good luck in the coming week!

  • i never look at the scale...too discouraging if i go up a few pounds....i try to go with how my clothes fit

  • I am so afraid of the scale !! It can get discouraging !!

  • YEAH we want numbers, we want some solid evidence something is god damned happening here. hah!

i am scared of the scale too. i was supposed to weigh-in on sunday, and even though i've been doing fine... i just.. idk. i didn't want to know. it was the same thought you had, if i had broken even or gained, it would have just put this dark cloud over my day/week whatever and probably wouldn't have been encouraging. Just step on when you're ready, or not at all, I guess, but that's boring...

  • Justine, I want to kiss your curly head.

I was thinking about busting out some numbers next week. I'll do it if you do it. Show me yours I show you mine kinda thing? Eh eh? Okay.

  • Like someone else mentioned, I rely on how my clothes fit to see if I lost anything or gained. Scales just give you numbers- there's always a bunch of other factors that contribute to the number you see, like water retention or how much muscle mass you have.

For trying not to binge, if you have time, maybe you can set aside portions ahead of time, so that you don't cosmic-binge!

  • At the end of the day, your body isn't going to total up how many calories you've eaten. Just try not to overeat and stuff yourself to the point where your body isn't burning off the calories at a steady pace, so that it stores the sugars and carbs into fat.

Good luck, and stay positive! :)

  • HI Justine!

My mom and I have have started the south beach diet and it has helped us get a big jump start into dieting,. and changing our habits .

I have the same problem as you, in the evenings i feel like i can eat the world! but since you come home from work maybe you can leave your food prepared so that you eat healthy meals rather than all the bad foods that come your way. Good Luck! and dont be afraid of the scale, its just a number & a way to show you're progress. Its not who you are. -M

  • As crazy as it sound jpmetz be POSITIVE :D

  • the scale can start to determine what was and wasn't a good week. maybe you were hormonal, maybe you retained water... maybe you had to pee, hell, anything can make the scale say something other than what you want it too.

Adding your measurements into the mix helps, it gives you more than your clothes, it gives you a different visualization . Maybe you haven't lost 5 lbs but maybe you've lost 3 inches.

Epic fail is okay.. bump in the road. Just remember it doesn't have to happen tomorrow too.

  • Hey Justine! I lost some weight last year counting calories like you are doing, I found that if I ate around half of my allowed calories during the day, I still had almost 1000 calories left after I got home from work. Then i could be a little bit 'bad' and not completely diet fail. I don't know if that helps any but it was my trick and it worked.

  • oh, it was "pass" huh?

don't you mean it was "passed"

  • mmmmmmmmm.

  • you look drunk.

    i'm jealous

  • HAHA i am not drunk, ass

  • It's ok I am scared of the scale too... I rely on how my clothes fit to decide if I lost weight!

It's ok to have good days and bad days.... counting calories becomes an obsession and then it just makes your brain tired :(

  • yeahhh I think I'm just gonna do that for a couple of weeks

  • Keep working towards your goal! :)

  • I am! thank you!
