  • thank you for posting! I've lived here in S.F. 31 years and enjoy learning more of the city history.

    never knew track existed.......

  • I'm making a large model of this cliff house. It's looks great. Hopefully you might be able to see it at the California State Fair.

  • Ah, but to have gone inside the baths and museum as I did a few times, awesome. I skated there a few times but it was the museum that was always fun to walk through. A 1958 movie: The Line-up was partially filmed in it. Even though it's a B&W film, its' all there to see. (-:

  • Wow, this is a wonderful video with some pics I've never seen before, great music and a overall educational experience.

  • i remember all the seals used to be on the big rock and bark and made a heck of a noise, the cliff house was and is in such a beautiful location, the view of the great highway

and the ocean, this is one of the most beautiful cities you will ever see

  • What is the music used for this video? I love it! The documentry was amazing too!

  • @mizzswager

Look at the caption info on the video...the music is identified there.

  • san francisco is full of history. anyone know how i can learn more about the city?

  • where's picture of the newer structure?.....and wasnt a "miracle" supposed to happen at some point. its just an old ass house that burned down twice. you didnt tell us anything special about it.

  • Exquisite! Thank you for this.... Brings back many many many memories....

  • Terrific, was just there this last week, still nice!

  • Very nice compilation. Even the "modest" replacement (in all its incarnatioins) is pretty darn big. WNP member and big fan of your site. I know Dan & Mary aren't that techy, have they seen your vids?

  • I suspect Mary & Dan have seen it. I created this quite awhile back when my focus was completely biased towards the 1896 structure. The movie clearly doesn't to the current structure justice. I'd remake it but my volunteer time is very limited.

  • Thank you for the nice short history of the Cliff House. Ocean Beach around that area is my favorite spot in SF. If only that elegant Victorian building remained, it could have added surrealistic beauty to the beach today.

  • Nicely done...I was there today...What I would give to be able to travel back in time and be there in 1900...just for a day. Thank you.

  • has anybody been 2 the ruins of it?

  • The ruins were long ago replaced by the newer structure.

  • Born and raised in San Francisco. Love the video, I go there every now and then, and I always imagined if the original cliff house was still standing.

  • Nice job, but way too many zooms and pans. Every shot doesn't need to zoom in or out. Great collection of stills.

Thanks for posting. Will check out your website.

  • Thanks for the critique....guess we were trying to follow the Ken Burns style. Have you created slideshows like this? If so, what program? Would love to redo it someday....

  • The slideshows I've done were on video w/o a computer, so any zooms were in-camera (if the stills were big enough).

But mostly I'd go from wide shot to CU's of details, as you did on some pgs of your website.

BTW, you and yr associates really did a GREAT job on yr Cliff House Project website! Tons of great photos, most of which I'd never seen before, and the slideshow of visiting Sutro Baths was super. Had wondered bout the layout inside. Visited once as a kid shortly before it closed. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the kind words on the website. Did you visit the baths to swim or ice skate? Apparently it was an ice skating place towards the end.

  • Didn't see the baths or rink, but I saw the Sky Tram and remember paying 25 cents to operate the Toothpick Ferris Wheel "constructed by a San Quentin inmate"... the same ferris wheel that was at the Musee Mechanique below the Cliff House till a few yrs ago. Now the Musee is down around Pier 45. My friend's Dad was really upset that I spent a whole quarter, worth a lot more in '64-'65. I think my parents gave me $1 total to spend.

  • merci pour le video

  • One of my favorite spots in the world. It always makes me first pinch myself, and then cry, when I see the Pacific again.

  • I know the feeling. It's a place that takes your breath away and doesn't give it back.

  • A Mini-Masterpiece. Thank you.

  • This is an wonderfully constructed video! It has helped me greatly in my research of the Cliff House.

  • how sad that it burnt :(

  • Very Nicely put together video! Thanks! eldon

  • Thanks!
