  • The look on her face at 5:25... amazing.

  • I think one of this movie's best qualities is that it doesn't try to drive home either a pro-life or pro-choice message. It makes you consider both sides, but it doesn't try to convince you that one viewpoint is absolutely right. At the end of the day, Vera is a sweet lady who's just trying to help out frightened young women. It's also important that the police aren't portrayed as the enemy. They're never shown to be cruel or judgmental; they're just upholding the law.

  • @Kaminarikodomo

I'm pro-life and I do like the film even though people still think the side I've 'chosen' is wrong and idiotic. The film just makes me feel like there's a possibility in working together with pro-choice people in a non-violent and accusing way. I love all people, even if we have differences.

  • When filming Vera Drake, only Imelda Staunton knew ahead of time that the subject of the film was abortion. None of the cast members playing the family members, including Staunton, knew that Vera was to be arrested until the moment the actors playing the police knocked on the door of the house they were using for rehearsals. Their genuine reactions of shock and confusion provided the raw material for their dialogue and actions.

  • This is a great and important film that focuses so much on each character. Not just Vera Drake. That's something you don't see much of anymore.

  • Ethel is a wee sweetie. Her husband is so well suited! Glad there was not another abused woman there. When I first saw this I thought that she may end up with a horrible guy!

  • this film is amazing - mike leigh is possibly on of the finest directors of our time and his visions of real life are both stunning and tragic. imelda staunton gives an incredibly real and emotional performance here and i think this film, along with many others of leighs films are very much overlooked and make hollywood seem like a complete joke.

  • At 5:25, there is a fantastic almost 20-second steady focus on Vera when she realizes what the police are here for. An incredibly subtle but palpable wave of emotions runs across Staunton's face, you can almost hear what Vera is thinking at that moment. Brilliant acting.

  • i agree, sad though

  • @likearealboy EXACTLY U SAID IT! that scene alone is worth watching this mov.

  • @likearealboy I don't think her biggest fear was getting caught, i think she was so afraid that one of the girls had died.
