what i dont understand about this is why people just bounce their sword back and forth, if it was a real fight, im sure someone would just run straight at the other, waving crazily, you cant really use your sword to block that
Yeah, actually you can. Crazy swings are the slowest and most telegraphed. I'm not a fencer, but a boxer, but still the same basic rules of combat apply. The fastest attack is a thrusting attack (like a jab). It's quick and you can't see it coming. When someone swings wildly, they use up energy and the weapon must travel a larger distance, making it slower. Also, with a good defense, you use minimal amounts of energy to block or defend the attack.
@p4cm4n182 yeah, you can. in a fencing fight, begginers usually try that first, as it does make sense. But parries are designed that way that you don't need almost any real FORCE to block somebody's attack; they simply LOCK-OUT the tip of the sword. See, the tip is the one that makes the hit, and a parry removes the tip just outside your bodyline - locks it out - so that you have to retract the sword and repeat the hit. And swinging wildly doesn't help; one countre-sixte and you're locked out :D
