Anybody who looks at this and thinks he's "average" has no appreciation for fundamental football. He's a brilliant football player, very rarely do you see a college linebacker with this much field awareness and overall polish.
Rolando McClain is fucking awesome player. He did not win the Dick Butkus Award and play for Alabama and run a 3-4 or 4-3 defense whatever the coaches decided for him to run because he was average.
..plus,, why would a top college football school like Alabama keep allowing Rolando to tackle" too high" lol.. come on folks.. wake up... he's a HUGE GUY!!.. he knows what's he's doing.. it's called putting all your weight and strength into the person your tackling and stopping their momentum... if you always go for their knees and feet first, they can stiff arm you and escape.. but try going thro someone's upper body like Rolando.. :) u won't.. I've never seen him in real life, but it doesnt it seem like he tackles awfully high? He is doing ok in the NFL so far but he has gotten burnt quite a few times by quicker players because he almost refuses to take out their knees. He will be top 3 LB in another year if he works on that. You can't stand up tackle in the NFL forever before you are just another average defensive player
He is a mastermind at reading plays and changing coverage and blitzes. He is the smartest LB I have seen in a while. He can read plays, make tough tackles, make interceptions, and read the QB's eyes to see where the pass is going so he can make a play on the ball or stuff the receiver. He is also good on the pursuit.
@910brick that's true but I thought about it the raiders shoulda trade Russell to Jacksonville instead of Morrison since they only got two QBs but it doesn't matter let's see how things go this year!

@910Brick LoL the nation traded Morrison like the moment after they drafted Mcclain. To Jax for i believe a 5th round pick. Morrison was a bum in the middle made every tackle 6 yards down field. I always felt he was out of position and would be much more well suited outside and hoped the raiders would keep him and give him a shot outside but that didnt happen.

in my honest opinion, he looks very instinctive. Definitely not a hard hitter by any means like Willis or Maualuga, but knows where he needs to be on EVERY play. This is a good LB, not one that will make crazy highlights on sports center, but he definitely seems to have a nose for the ball.

I was impressed with his pass coverage but disaapointed bout him gettin blocked so easily and so often...and his tacklin form but he slows guys down for others to help and tips balls for our good secondary to intercpet..good run stopper and play reader..so on those skills alone he will help the raiders....not to mention he will only get better...oakland needs a new coaching staff tho

The ONLY "knock" on him ( this isn't really a big deal either) is that he isn't as explosive as some other LB's that came out this past year. Over all, best LB in the draft. Looks like a beast to me. Granted, not every play can make the f*ckin highlight reale, but I like how he fly's to the ball and is able to take down the ball carrier. He oughtta shake things up in the AFC West, and with Lamarr Houston in front of him to help slow up the run, we oughtta be an improved defense without a doubt. Go Raiders!

The kid was the leader on D of the National Champ 'Tide. He's the best pick the Raiders have made since Nnamdi. (well spoke 2WIREG) He's going to be a very good/ pro bowler. When was the last time the Raiders had an impact LB? I love Morrison but his days might be numbered.
Let's hope they go after either the OT from USC, the DL from UCLA or maybe one of the QB's in the second rd.

Not impressed at all - he jogs a lot, no burst, always upright, gets lost in the noise - don't see anything inspiring here for the Raiders - just another guy to go through the motions, hold a block and hope someone makes a tackle. No burst, no fire, no relentlessness I can see from this 7 minute and 33 second "highlight" reel

The Giants really wanted this kid for a reason. The scouts have much more info on him and YouTube videos only show so much. Kind of a toss up for me. But he wasn't a bad pick.

But I don't see anything else that is overly impressive about him. They say he has a very high football IQ and watches tons of film, I hope that helps him in the pros.
@TheRealDjTovio The fact he is a leader, not afraid to be a leader, comes from the Alabama system under Saban, and is an accomplished student of film and schemes makes me feel good on the pick - it is what the Raiders need on that defense (in 2009 season after 1 blown coverage or TD the defense went instantly FLAT) - he can keep the tempo up. I hope we see the same demeanor on the field.

Yes i say he has great size and play maker ability, its just that raiders dont need a slow tackle machine, we need someone like Patrick willis / Sean weatherspoon type. I feel the Raiders could be switching to a 3-4 defense. They signed DE Chris Cooper and a second DE. Also signed LB Wimbley. We still have LB Morrison and now we have McClain. Sounds like we added some depth for a good 3-4 defense.

in my honest opinion, he looks very instinctive. Definitely not a hard hitter by any means like Willis or Maualuga, but knows where he needs to be on EVERY play. This is a good LB, not one that will make crazy highlights on sports center, but he definitely seems to have a nose for the ball.

The ONLY "knock" on him ( this isn't really a big deal either) is that he isn't as explosive as some other LB's that came out this past year. Over all, best LB in the draft. Someone who will instantly make a defense better.

The kid was the leader on D of the National Champ 'Tide. He's the best pick the Raiders have made since Nnamdi. (well spoke 2WIREG) He's going to be a very good/ pro bowler. When was the last time the Raiders had an impact LB? I love Morrison but his days might be numbered.
Let's hope they go after either the OT from USC, the DL from UCLA or maybe one of the QB's in the second rd.

@TheRealDjTovio The fact he is a leader, not afraid to be a leader, comes from the Alabama system under Saban, and is an accomplished student of film and schemes makes me feel good on the pick - it is what the Raiders need on that defense (in 2009 season after 1 blown coverage or TD the defense went instantly FLAT) - he can keep the tempo up. I hope we see the same demeanor on the field.

They could had traded the 7th overall pick and gotten two lower picks albeit in the first round. Thats all im saying man. I dont see how that is ignorant.

Today Oakland traded twice so obviously they are fielding call but when you are in the TOP 10 not many teams want to take your spot. Name one team who would have traded to 8 and why. THERE IS NONE. Saying a team should have traded is saying a team has to read the future.

@GUEROMEXICANO831 Picking a player who is projected to be picked at 13 or 14 at 8 IS NOT a reach. The Chargers trade down to pick a player projected in the 20s and people dont say shit because its not the Raiders. Oakland played the board perfectly, picking the best play from a postion at the pick they were giving, seeing that #8 was a terrible spot to trade. Fking Clausen lasted till well in the second. Your argument is terrible and you point doesn't hold with anyone...

I feel the Raiders could be switching to a 3-4 defense. They signed DE Chris Cooper and a second DE. Also signed LB Wimbley. We still have LB Morrison and now we have McClain. Sounds like we added some depth for a good 3-4 defense.

lol n once again im bak after readin some more comments....yes i agree he doesnt seem like hes a hard hitter or an explosive hitter but if u notice he actually holds his ground n hes strong n gets to push them back not only dat he has good awerness n reads plays good as well goo reaction time once he plays in the NFL he will become a HArd hitter jus give him some time =D!!
