I always remember taking Malcolm to a west end hotel when i was doing a bit of cabbing, great thrill for me as a Palace supporter as well. this was in the seventies. He gave me a tip which was more than the fare. Great character R.I.P. Mate.
Bon Voyage Mal, from a City fan of the '60's, to whom you were an iconic image, still looming large over Maine Road (& perhaps Eastlands). It was a great journey, now sail away, with the image of Colin Bell cutting in from the inside against the Spurs, laying off to Lee, whose shot is saved, but the rebound falls to Summerbee who slots it home, 2-0 to City,..... just as you showed them!
Terry Venables took most of the credit for the Palace Team Malcolm built up in the late 1970's ("the team of the 80's") - and on paper Malcolm's tenure as manager doesn't look very distinguished.
However the bare statistics cannot possibly do justice to the style and panache that he introduced. Malcolm made the Eagles a team which was noticed and one in which we could all take pride, despite the often disappointing results.
Big Mal, charisma, class act, good man,the Sean Connery of Football.I was at the Kop in 72,he came onto the pitch,15 mins before kick off,Kop baited, he walked down toward it, fans loved it, a plastic ball was thrown out to him, he shot and missed, masses of laughter and respect.
Man City fans will have fond memories and rightly so. Lets remember though that Joe Mercer was the manager.
Aside from the fedora spell at Palace I believe that Big Mal never really achieved much else after City and his record shows that he went through a hell of a lot of clubs where he stayed for just a year or two at most.
However his contribution to the Man City success period should be remembered and I salute him for that.
@punditpete With regards to his spell at Crystal Palace, I remind you that Palace were in the First Division when he took over-albeit near the bottom. He did not save them from relegation in the 1972/73 season. The following season was his first full season at Palace and he was expected to get them out of the Second Division. He did that-he took them straight down another division to the Third!
Big Mal the peoples manager, like alex, the peoples champion, men of style and wit following a path controversial at times but shining like a star.god bless ya mal!
thank you malcolm.thank you for making and changing crystal palace into the club we are today.bet you and cloughie will be having a glass and cigar tonight.RIP
@philmcfc26 have no tear any more for he will be were most are in anther time on a different plane for were he is we are also are in a future happy, life without end at last from a manchester utd supporter i recall him in the 1968 when city won the bigest cup in England and utd in europe nice man maybe he's teaching me foot ball in the future God bless from the INHERITORS
BM was manager of Palace. Results weren't going well he put it down to the fact that the black players wouldn't pass to the white players and vice versa.he decided to sort it out once and for all. He gathered all the players into a dressing room and told them it had to stop...and that there was no black and white in his team, as far as he was concerned they were all blue.Having got that off his chest he told them to get onto the team coach dark blues at the back, light blues at the front !
That 6-1 beating of United was for Big Mal a true Legend
