  • Schumacher/Hill/Villeneuve/Montoya/Alonso were all great rivalries, but his rivalry with Hakkinen had to be the closest and best to watch. It sucks I wasn't into F1 then.

  • Todays speed boosts and easy catch ups has killed F1

  • The cars looked best around these times

  • Which year is that?

  • @tupilia13

    It is the 1998 season.

  • rain-master michel schumacher xD

  • schumacher is a great driver on the wet..i remember Spain 1996..

  • 2.42 get married a loser ha ha ha !!! Michael Night the best of all time !!!

  • @Eandeavour Loser? i bet they dont think each other as a losers + both have got titles. Even the guy that collects the bottles from the place after the race is less loser than you.

  • Ah ah aha hakkinen .....

  • best mika the best!!!!!

  • best shumi the best

  • Your still the best Mika :)

  • Hakkinen got what a 50second lead eliminated cuz of the weather, and then Schumacher didnt take his stop go penalty?? This is probably the biggest example of Ferrari bias I can recall.

  • This was the shit.

Schumacher was one of the most accomplished drivers in the history of F1.

Yet he stated that Häkkinen was the only driver he really feared.

I guess he quit because so did Häkkinen. There was no challenge to him anymore :c

  • Hakkinen a good driver, but Schumy should have been 98 champion, because Schumy was much greater than the mono syllabic grey dude. ;-)

  • Watching clips like this to tie me over til the new season, great battles the two had. Last season was great to watch.

  • With the new Pirelli tyres, I'm backing Schumi to start winning in 2011. x

  • schumacher is the greatest "in the rain" driver I have ever seen....when the times for the sectors are given you can see that schumacher was closing in on hakkinen at a blistering pace.....no other driver can do this in the rain....the only driver I can think of today that may be remotely close to schumacher's rain driving abilities is Sebastian Vettel....though he is still very very young...One day, however, I think vettel will become the greatest F1 driver the sport has witnessed

  • Vettel???+ What about Lewis, 2-3 times better than vettel on the rain

  • @leiern83 lol...not even close...vettel dominates tracks when it rains...just look at last season and this season

  • @evropekon button is a better rain driver

  • @TheLloydA1 No way! That's crazy - Schumy was the rain master. Button is good in the rain but he doesn't come close to Schumacher-skill in the wet. Just my opinion.

  • Schumacher always was very good in the rain alot better then Hakkanien

  • THIS is real F1 - one man versus another! None of this "points game" nonsense of the last few years!

  • Two warriors here...

  • diniz is in the gravel trap! no surprises there

  • the best times in F1, that was real racing and battles between schumacher and hakkinen!

    Miss that so much!!!!

  • im german, i say FUCK SCHUMI

  • Schumacher - my F1 driver ever, but now Robert Kubica is the best, of course in my opinion

  • Hakkinen got psyched out by Schumacher, obviously. :) But I respect Hakkinen too, because he didn't spin his car on the grass, but managed to carefully get back on the track.

  • Häkkinen still won the title that year.

  • Sure, Hakkinen made a mistake and it cost him the race, but the safety car cost him his 40 second lead.

  • how fuckinggg ironic!! minardi goes off, and then hak goes into 2nd. dear oh dear.

  • ohh dear mika oh dear. u had to throw it away with the silliest of slips

  • Michael Schumacher, brilliant and entertaining driver! I loved the rivalry between him and Mika Hakkinen. Can anyone confirm that this is the race where Schumi won in the pitlane?

  • yes, the pitlane :)

  • @amandajbishop I have the same doubt, but I can not see this maneuver

  • what a bad luck....:s

  • 3:48 ...schuey almost losin it :D great car control at high speed

  • Shumacher is the best, his battles with hakkinen were always close, though Hakkinen won the war, or overall against his old rival.

WE also have to remmember how unlucky hakkinen was in alot of the grand prix due to some failure by the car.

  • Hakkinen was by far his toughest rival

  • Murray says "Finnish Grand Prix" lol

  • Shumacher is the best of all-time, but especially on wet surface !

  • this was such a good time:-D but i think (and hope) next season it will be very exciting with red bull, brawn gp, ferrari and meclaren^^^^

  • i miss these days........

  • murray makes it come alive

  • THAT WAS THE REAL F1

  • Häkkinen really fucked up this time. But the battles between those two were something to remember.

  • senna and schumy

i wish i could see they fightin in a rain race.....

  • 2 super drivers!!!

No one can say these drivers are not as good as the 80´s drivers.

for example, hakkinen was in the same time lap of Senna in qualification in the 2 races of the 3 they used the same Mclaren, and qualifycation was the best gadget for Senna...

That is another proof that HAkkinen and Schumacher are 2 of the greatest drivers of all time!

And Schumacher is the best driver of history!!

  • Schumacher was overall a better and more complete driver than Hakkinen but remember that Martin Brundle, the only man who actually was a team mate for a season both to Mika and Michael, says Hakkinen was faster of the two.

Also, Hakkinen drove the '93 Mac a lot more than Senna as he was the test driver and Estoril was one of the F1 teams' favorite test circuits. Senna didn't test much at all and pretty much only drove the grands prix.

  • because it were hard but fair battles between schumacher and hakkinen

  • i miss that times

  • great racing + murray walker commentary = pure ecstacy

  • BOTH LEGENDS :D i miss that great time in formula 1 .... legendary battles between them...i'm really glad SCHUMACHER is back for a few races...how cool is this??? i know there are many people who don't like schumacher but you can't change the fact he is one of the greatest ;) and can't wait for him to race against new guys like hamilton or vettel for the first time!!whether you like him or not you gotta admit he's brave

  • agree 100% I cant wait to get him back in the car. I hope that he will be in good shape.

  • @suppppenkasper Yeah, michael is really doing good now hahahahaha, Go hamilton!

Michael will probably retire next year.

  • schumi & mika... the battle of the 2 titans of modern F1 racing on track & off track!!. This is what first attracted me to watching F1 - spectacular!!

right now, i watch F1 not because of Button (he's really a good driver) nor Hamilton. But rather, I'm trying I'm looking out for Ross Brawn, hoping that he can replicate the success that he had achieved at Ferrari!

  • When Häkkinen retired there have been no battles like chumi vs mika. When Schumacher retired there have been no real drivers in F1... Mika and Chumi made me watch F1 and over 10 years of their battles in its history.

  • These were the best times of F1 with Schumacher and Hakkinen fighting for the first place.

  • Amen brother!

  • totally agree

  • @crespo265 and schuey mostly won! lol. mika just coldnt withstand him

  • @crespo265

You're 15 yrs old maximum. I'm wondering where toddler like you get confidence to judge whole history of F1.

In video, Mika vs. Schumi was just short period when watching nowadays F1 wasn't boring.

  • @crespo265 what are you numb, what a boring f1 time

i saw f1 at that time, and for me it was very boring, you almost dont see overtakes at all, whit luckey when they go to the pit stop....David was the domestic driver, and shumacher developing the ferrari and irvine another domestic driver...Are you from filand???

  • hakkinen made a mistake but he didn't spin. they are great pilots man

  • @SHIZOFRENCAT You collect the bottles from the place ??? Good boy !!! My hero !!!

  • Raining...

I knew it would no other than British gran prix.

  • a mistake is a battle too, dude. schumacher is the world best in the world of the world...you know what i mean?

  • hell yeah

  • Schumacher simply the best........remember that 1998 was the season where schumy lose the world champions because david coulthard hit him(spa-francoshiamp).......

  • schumacher is a loser??? so tell me who is a winner???

    YOU???

  • this wasnt battle just Hakkinen did mistake

  • well, hakkinens front wing was damaged, so he had not as much downforce as schumacher had, but anyways

  • Oh mistakes in a battlefield can couse death. So not making them is part of the mission.

So it goes in the sport...

  • kovalainen is not a briliant driver.

    the best is vettel.

  • And by what measure are you judging that opinion?.

  • vettel in a toro rosso's car obtained resulted superior than kovalainen in a powerful mclaren's car. like a victory in 2008

  • And how does that make Vettel the best in F1 though?.

He won in mitigating circumstance's, had all the top drivers got qualifing right that day, Vettel would never have won!.

Don't get me wrong, i think Vettel has potential to become one of best in F1, but he is far from the proven article right now!.

And i don't rate Hekki either, i think unless he has an outstanding season this year(wins the WDC) he will be gone from McLaren, to be replaced with either Vettel or Rosberg!.

  • I think Vettel is gonna be the best too.

in his first year in F1 he show us he has potential driving a toro rosso.

  • You know i really hope Kovalainen proves me wrong and has a good season this year!.

Im not one of these stupid fanboy supporters(of any driver), but going by his pace last year, i just can't see him improving enough to ever be able to compete with Hamilton!.

And with both Vettel and Rosberg looking like they will be available next year, i can't see McLaren holding onto him with both these other potential stars up for grabs!, as i believe either will be perfect for the McLaren setup!.

  • i like heikki but he isn't very good in my opinion. Vettel is great though and he is the next fastest driver other than raikkonen and hamilton. The best McLaren driver paring was in 2005 and 2006 with Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikkonen

  • Your forgetting Alonso, much as i think he is a self serving, back stabbing little tosser, there is no doubt he is an outstanding talent in a race car!.

  • No he is not, thats the point, he barely scraped home in the points last season, costing McLaren a chance at the WCC!.

And McLaren don't want a number 2 driver, they want 2 drivers that are capable of contesting the WDC, thats why Ron Dennis wanted Alonso, but he ended up throwing his toys out the pram when Hamilton showed he could match him for pace, and Alonso assumed(wrongly)that he would be given No1 status because of his pedigree!.

Thats how strongly McLaren believe in equality!.

  • Kovaleinen isn't good enough, its simple as that!, in fact he isn't even good enough to be at McLaren and will be replaced at end of 09 if not sooner!.

  • Hamilton "simulator wonderboy" learned to drive without even been on the track actually. He has no personality and his charisma lays on his girlfriend. Most fun in F1 now is his father´s pissed off face when Lewis loses to Kovalainen. You need to be a Finn to win.

  • Are you retarded or stupid?.

How many times have you seen Lewis's dad being "pissed off looking" when Kovalainen has beat him?.

Il tell you the answer none!, because Kovalainen aint good enough to beat him ya donkey!.

  • ohhhhhhh what a shame! haha por chemo!

  • Hakkinen lol :P ....

  • Of course testing helps overcome a rookie's learning curve. Most drivers in F1 have been racing since they were 8 years old. It adapting to the new cars which rookies struggle with, not racing.

  • Yea, your kind of right but testing does not simulate real racing conditions and nothing will fully prepare you for actually racing an F1 car until you do it!

  • That comment was a reply to Craig 1981

  • I respect your views but all the greats have driven for lower teams and come through the ranks where you often see a level playing field. Can you remember Mika in the Lotus or Michaels entrance in the Jordan. Less of the Fag you like Lewis and thats good for you.

  • epic, gotta love it

  • This comments section is saturated with fanboys. Just enjoy some nostalgic racing!

  • Hamilton had thousands of miles of testing before his first race, already 90% of a rookie's learning curve and he'd nowhere near Schumacher's level. He wont be as good as Schumacher.

  • that backliner shouldnt have been blocking michael he should have been sent round to catch the back of the pack

  • was that bellof?

  • bellof and senna

senna was like 6 seconds a lap faster than prost that was leadin and bellof like 2 seconds slower than him

  • Bellof was catching Senna. But that has nothing to do with this video.

  • he was not catching up with senna, i have the whole race here dude

senna was slightly faster than him

  • actually Bellof was catching Senna who was in turn catching Prost...

Bellof gained 10 places in 3 laps...

  • Very true Michael is the only real rain master I miss these days to. Hamilton you will never be worthy of being the rain master as Murrey used to call Schumi.

  • the greatest rain-master of evertime, and the greatest driver in history, Michael Schumacher!!!

  • MURRAY:And now RAIN MASTER M.S takes the lead :)

SCHUMI THE GREATES WHO DISAGREES ITS JUST JEALOUS

  • (SCHUMI THE GREATES WHO DISAGREES ITS JUST JEALOUS)

So having a different opinion is being jealous?

    hum...

  • Having a different opinion is indefinable or incorrect :)

  • little in terms of age....not in terms of size!!! MURRAY WALKER = LEGEND!!!

  • yeah mika-shcummi the heroes of F1

  • Hakkinen is the best!

  • Lol Hakkinen was little scared?! :D

SCHUMI GO GO GO GO! UR THE GREATEST!

  • SCHUMI THE GREATEST!

  • I totally agree with you, I'm a finnish drivers supporter like Mika, Raikka and Makkinen. Few years ago I find out the same thing you said: finnish drivers always fail when they're under pressure, take a look at Mika Kallio, Kimi Raikkonen and even Mika. When things goes wrong, they've nothing to do...But I still think that they're the best!

  • if James Allen were commentating on this, it would seem dull and uneventful, with Murray it is thrilling

  • this is back in the days when overtaking was routine...

  • It hasn't been routine since the early 80's...

People have been complaining about a lack of overtaking since the early 90's.

  • Yeah, I guess your'e right, but there was a hell of a lot more overtaking back then than there is now

  • Can't disagree there. Hopefully next year's regs will do a lot to help.

  • buuuh, i miss those rain races with our rain god :)

  • I miss Murray

  • 'It's all down to little Ralf' haha, classic Murray.

  • Bellissimo!! Memorabile!! Grande Schumy!

  • Bellissimo? xD that was a hakkinen´s mistake, not an overtake xD

  • gread memorys

  • i think schumacher won this race unfair. I remember that he got a stop & go penalty and he came to pits in the last lap for suffering it. that's why he didn't lose as much time as he would have lost if he came to pits earlier.

  • and, so what? thats not unfair, just strategy, dude. unfair, lol...very nice.

  • well that isnt allowed anymore to come stop and go on last lap..

  • On this particular day, the FIA screwed up first. A stop-and-go penalty could not be issued when the race is more than 75% run, it should always have been ten seconds added to the final race time, not actually visiting the pits. Schumacher could have easily done without those ten seconds.

  • hey.... why was there a marlboro logo and ferrari couldn't show it on the car? :0

  • because the race was in Great Britain and there you mustn't show tobacco companies' advertisings

  • i know... that's why i ask this, there's a marlboro brand in a wall

  • oh sorry, I didn't read your question accurate

  • confussing 'ey...

  • golden era?are you kidding?

    try the 80`s

  • yer murry was great f1 wasnt ever boring but now f1s full of cheats

  • Yes thanks to Mclaren.

Fire Ron dennis, and get McLaren back in fair F1 racing

  • These were the golden days of F1

  • i wish murry walker was still commentating

  • GO MIKA! <3 :)

  • i was there that day! :) 1 and only grand prix. missed coulthard go off at abbey chicane coz a was doin a piss lol. was only 11 tho

  • Hey, there was no battle on the video....

  • Wow thats wet!!! Hakkinen was very good, was just unlucky that he entered the sport at the same time as Schumacher, otherwise I think he would have won 3 or 4 titles. Great driving from Schumacher he really made the most of that safety car.

  • Schumacher for ever KIMI for ever FERRARI for ever

  • Ferrari for ever.... Would you have said the same thing back when it was Jean Alesi, Gerhard Berger, Nicola Larini etc?

  • yep

  • The King Michael

    Forever the BEST

  • What a wonderful video.

  • One of the most enjoyable races in recen years. Can't believe it was 9 years ago!!

  • The king of the rain !!!!!

  • forever schumi

  • The RED BARON. We miss him a lot. What a legendry driver.

  • tht twitch on 3 48 very scary

  • Woow!!!! The rainmaster. He was absolutely flying on the wet track :)
