Schumacher/Hill/Villeneuve/Montoya/Alonso were all great rivalries, but his rivalry with Hakkinen had to be the closest and best to watch. It sucks I wasn't into F1 then.
@Eandeavour Loser? i bet they dont think each other as a losers + both have got titles. Even the guy that collects the bottles from the place after the race is less loser than you.
Hakkinen got what a 50second lead eliminated cuz of the weather, and then Schumacher didnt take his stop go penalty?? This is probably the biggest example of Ferrari bias I can recall.
schumacher is the greatest "in the rain" driver I have ever seen....when the times for the sectors are given you can see that schumacher was closing in on hakkinen at a blistering pace.....no other driver can do this in the rain....the only driver I can think of today that may be remotely close to schumacher's rain driving abilities is Sebastian Vettel....though he is still very very young...One day, however, I think vettel will become the greatest F1 driver the sport has witnessed
@TheLloydA1 No way! That's crazy - Schumy was the rain master. Button is good in the rain but he doesn't come close to Schumacher-skill in the wet. Just my opinion.
Hakkinen got psyched out by Schumacher, obviously. :) But I respect Hakkinen too, because he didn't spin his car on the grass, but managed to carefully get back on the track.
Michael Schumacher, brilliant and entertaining driver! I loved the rivalry between him and Mika Hakkinen. Can anyone confirm that this is the race where Schumi won in the pitlane?
No one can say these drivers are not as good as the 80´s drivers.
for example, hakkinen was in the same time lap of Senna in qualification in the 2 races of the 3 they used the same Mclaren, and qualifycation was the best gadget for Senna...
That is another proof that HAkkinen and Schumacher are 2 of the greatest drivers of all time!
Schumacher was overall a better and more complete driver than Hakkinen but remember that Martin Brundle, the only man who actually was a team mate for a season both to Mika and Michael, says Hakkinen was faster of the two.
Also, Hakkinen drove the '93 Mac a lot more than Senna as he was the test driver and Estoril was one of the F1 teams' favorite test circuits. Senna didn't test much at all and pretty much only drove the grands prix.
BOTH LEGENDS :D i miss that great time in formula 1 .... legendary battles between them...i'm really glad SCHUMACHER is back for a few races...how cool is this??? i know there are many people who don't like schumacher but you can't change the fact he is one of the greatest ;) and can't wait for him to race against new guys like hamilton or vettel for the first time!!whether you like him or not you gotta admit he's brave
schumi & mika... the battle of the 2 titans of modern F1 racing on track & off track!!. This is what first attracted me to watching F1 - spectacular!!
right now, i watch F1 not because of Button (he's really a good driver) nor Hamilton. But rather, I'm trying I'm looking out for Ross Brawn, hoping that he can replicate the success that he had achieved at Ferrari!
When Häkkinen retired there have been no battles like chumi vs mika. When Schumacher retired there have been no real drivers in F1... Mika and Chumi made me watch F1 and over 10 years of their battles in its history.
@crespo265 what are you numb, what a boring f1 time
i saw f1 at that time, and for me it was very boring, you almost dont see overtakes at all, whit luckey when they go to the pit stop....David was the domestic driver, and shumacher developing the ferrari and irvine another domestic driver...Are you from filand???
Schumacher simply the best........remember that 1998 was the season where schumy lose the world champions because david coulthard hit him(spa-francoshiamp).......
And how does that make Vettel the best in F1 though?.
He won in mitigating circumstance's, had all the top drivers got qualifing right that day, Vettel would never have won!.
Don't get me wrong, i think Vettel has potential to become one of best in F1, but he is far from the proven article right now!.
And i don't rate Hekki either, i think unless he has an outstanding season this year(wins the WDC) he will be gone from McLaren, to be replaced with either Vettel or Rosberg!.
You know i really hope Kovalainen proves me wrong and has a good season this year!.
Im not one of these stupid fanboy supporters(of any driver), but going by his pace last year, i just can't see him improving enough to ever be able to compete with Hamilton!.
And with both Vettel and Rosberg looking like they will be available next year, i can't see McLaren holding onto him with both these other potential stars up for grabs!, as i believe either will be perfect for the McLaren setup!.
i like heikki but he isn't very good in my opinion. Vettel is great though and he is the next fastest driver other than raikkonen and hamilton. The best McLaren driver paring was in 2005 and 2006 with Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikkonen
Your forgetting Alonso, much as i think he is a self serving, back stabbing little tosser, there is no doubt he is an outstanding talent in a race car!.
No he is not, thats the point, he barely scraped home in the points last season, costing McLaren a chance at the WCC!.
And McLaren don't want a number 2 driver, they want 2 drivers that are capable of contesting the WDC, thats why Ron Dennis wanted Alonso, but he ended up throwing his toys out the pram when Hamilton showed he could match him for pace, and Alonso assumed(wrongly)that he would be given No1 status because of his pedigree!.
Kovaleinen isn't good enough, its simple as that!, in fact he isn't even good enough to be at McLaren and will be replaced at end of 09 if not sooner!.
Hamilton "simulator wonderboy" learned to drive without even been on the track actually. He has no personality and his charisma lays on his girlfriend. Most fun in F1 now is his father´s pissed off face when Lewis loses to Kovalainen. You need to be a Finn to win.
Of course testing helps overcome a rookie's learning curve. Most drivers in F1 have been racing since they were 8 years old. It adapting to the new cars which rookies struggle with, not racing.
Yea, your kind of right but testing does not simulate real racing conditions and nothing will fully prepare you for actually racing an F1 car until you do it!
I respect your views but all the greats have driven for lower teams and come through the ranks where you often see a level playing field. Can you remember Mika in the Lotus or Michaels entrance in the Jordan. Less of the Fag you like Lewis and thats good for you.
Hamilton had thousands of miles of testing before his first race, already 90% of a rookie's learning curve and he'd nowhere near Schumacher's level. He wont be as good as Schumacher.
Very true Michael is the only real rain master I miss these days to. Hamilton you will never be worthy of being the rain master as Murrey used to call Schumi.
I totally agree with you, I'm a finnish drivers supporter like Mika, Raikka and Makkinen. Few years ago I find out the same thing you said: finnish drivers always fail when they're under pressure, take a look at Mika Kallio, Kimi Raikkonen and even Mika. When things goes wrong, they've nothing to do...But I still think that they're the best!
i think schumacher won this race unfair. I remember that he got a stop & go penalty and he came to pits in the last lap for suffering it. that's why he didn't lose as much time as he would have lost if he came to pits earlier.
