@Deidara188 Yes, but what do Onnagata play? Women. The only reason the narrator is saying 'she', is because the dance is about a woman that the Onnagata is playing. Think before you post. Though I do agree with you about Tamasaburo-sama. He is a national treasure to Japan.
Severing of the finger hinted at here was not about severing relations. Some would cut off a finger to prove their love FOR the man. It was a dedication, almost like ownership. She would ruin her life for him.... next step, if they could not run away was Shinju - a lovers' suicide pact. Tragic ugliness behind such elegant beauty.
Gorgeous , beautiful, amazing!! The narrations helped me a great deal. It's a first time i could actually watch to the end (considering the sad music one need to get used to in order to be able to listen). Can i embed this to my website? Thank you.
@irenkaification Um i dont mean to be rude but the poster has already stated that the commentary is narrated by Paul M. Griffith and that it can be turned off on the original DVD, you should buy it and then you can turn it off, but you must admit that it does add valuable information to those who may not know what is going on otherwise.
I do hope you realize I understand Japanese fluently. Yes, there was a reason why I called him an idiot. He tries to insult someone in romaji instead of the actual Japanese text. That makes him an idiot.
This dance is beautiful. It takes mastery to dance so gracefully, slowly, delicately and precision while positioning the garment and accesories beautifully and showing such passionate emotions.
This reminds me of the Aztecs when they would inhale hallucinogens, eat magic mushrooms and mix a bunch of mind altering drugs together except, they had a reason to do stuff like that.
there are no woman in kabuki because some of the dance could not hold the audience for as long as some of the other dances so they used their feminine charms which then turned Kabuki into more of a strip show. So they were forbidden to be on the kabuki stage to this present day.
not what happened. Kabuki was started by women. Must understand that stripping and hookers (if such low terms can be used) is revered as an art form and business there. There is no Christian/Muslim shame in Japan like in the West. Samuri, who got low pay, were wanting to see more Kabuki. Business fights broke out. Women were banned, so were young men. Had nothing to do with strip shows, but a business convenience. Mature men with shaved locks became the entertainment- Now it's just tradition.
Kabuki was started by women alone. Samuri, who got low pay, were wanting to see more Kabuki. Business fights broke out. The Shogun had women banned, and later young men too. Had nothing to do with morality, but a business convenience. Mature men with shaved locks became the entertainment- It's not illegal for young men and woman to join now, but not really done. Mature men are just tradition now.
strange yes but there is a reason Women were banned from performing in Kabuki plays in 1629 because it was thought to disturb discipline. They were replaced by beautiful young men to play the female roles, but in 1652 they were banned for the same reasons as the women. Kabuki was allowed to continue with adult men playing all the roles, Yaro kabuki, which is the style that has became famous.
I'm very proud I'm part japanese, the beauty and tradition of my culture help my keep my head up when the world of Americans push me into shame of the past wars.
America does not own the world and cannot command it to cast shame upon Japan. It is a shame brought upon yourselves. Every country wrestles with its dark past.
I am interested in the DVD but it is not clear to me from the yesasia page which of the DVDs contain which play and whether they have english subtitles (oral and/or text) or not ? I need a region 2 (Europe) DVD but english subtitles. Can anyone help ?
Hello friend I went to the yesasia page and it appears the DVD Sagi Musume - Tamasaburo Bando Butoushuu (DVD) (Vol.2) (Japan Version) is available for Region 2, but it does not have english subtitles or language.

Tamasaburo is the best onnagata and this british narrator is stupid because the person performing here is a man

Isn't Kurokami used as the intiation dance from Maiko transitioning into Geiko (Geisha)?
