  • Tamasaburo is the best onnagata and this british narrator is stupid because the person performing here is a man

  • @Deidara188 Yes, but what do Onnagata play? Women. The only reason the narrator is saying 'she', is because the dance is about a woman that the Onnagata is playing. Think before you post. Though I do agree with you about Tamasaburo-sama. He is a national treasure to Japan.

  • Magnificent kimono, most impressive I've seen, I must say...

  • Because it is disturbed, please do not turn on the English explanation. I am angry!

  • Severing of the finger hinted at here was not about severing relations. Some would cut off a finger to prove their love FOR the man. It was a dedication, almost like ownership. She would ruin her life for him.... next step, if they could not run away was Shinju - a lovers' suicide pact. Tragic ugliness behind such elegant beauty.

  • how would oiran sleep with such big hair

  • @tumblefan101 they had special pillows on small stands to rest their necks on.

  • @Sotkai11 i know they had stands but i was thinking it would have had to have been like a really big one like bigger than a maikos is

  • งดงาม

  • That is lovely. The costume is incredible!

  • @MsKagome19 In past women play Kabuki first time!

  • Gorgeous , beautiful, amazing!! The narrations helped me a great deal. It's a first time i could actually watch to the end (considering the sad music one need to get used to in order to be able to listen). Can i embed this to my website? Thank you.

  • @alennna Best Onnagata!

  • Can't you post a video without comments, please? What kabuki this is if we must listen to your voice all the time?

  • @irenkaification Um i dont mean to be rude but the poster has already stated that the commentary is narrated by Paul M. Griffith and that it can be turned off on the original DVD, you should buy it and then you can turn it off, but you must admit that it does add valuable information to those who may not know what is going on otherwise.

  • @MsKagome19 Really?! He could've fooled me. I love how Japan can be modern, but at the same time keep old traditions alive.

  • Thank you upload

  • @hipp6y

I do hope you realize I understand Japanese fluently. Yes, there was a reason why I called him an idiot. He tries to insult someone in romaji instead of the actual Japanese text. That makes him an idiot.

  • Such beauty, mesmerizing art. Thank you, Japan.

  • good

    yeru 2

  • This dance is beautiful. It takes mastery to dance so gracefully, slowly, delicately and precision while positioning the garment and accesories beautifully and showing such passionate emotions.

  • This video makes me cry every time I see it, He portrays the loneliness so well and so beautifully, I love Bando he is amazing!!!

  • This reminds me of the Aztecs when they would inhale hallucinogens, eat magic mushrooms and mix a bunch of mind altering drugs together except, they had a reason to do stuff like that.

  • @sysofatallica...? a reason for destroying ur brain cells? Is there ever a good reason. >.<. This is beautiful!

  • So happy this is explained!! Always been curious, but never knew where to begin! Thanks for posting.

  • From what I know, Kurokami is danced also by Geisha.

Isn't Kurokami used as the intiation dance from Maiko transitioning into Geiko (Geisha)?

  • Such beautiful hands...

  • In the Kyoto Flower & Willow geigi community...they perform Kabuki plays with geiko playing male roles. :-)

  • I love his work, I do believe we are watching a legend in our own time.

  • Kabuki is the best theater in the world! Especially when it is played by Bando Tamasaburo-sensei!

  • you need to stop watching naruto your all going braindead its ok to like anime but dont obsese over it that goes for everyone

  • huh?

If you don't know where is it well:

It's in the east of Koto and Sumida and south of katsushika!

I even meet Bando Tamasaburo-sama, the greatest Kabuki onnagata actor second to Okuni!

  • if i am an idiot, then you are a fool, learn the language, and if i am a stupid guy,..then you are a retarded being

  • Sensei is used to address teachers(kakashi ^^), lawyers, doctors and other professionals

  • wow so this is Kabuki... its so beautiful and mesmerizing just like a moving painting.. hermoso!!

  • i just have one question. why are there no women in kabuki? I know it's men playing the female roles, but i don't know why.

  • there are no woman in kabuki because some of the dance could not hold the audience for as long as some of the other dances so they used their feminine charms which then turned Kabuki into more of a strip show. So they were forbidden to be on the kabuki stage to this present day.

  • not what happened. Kabuki was started by women. Must understand that stripping and hookers (if such low terms can be used) is revered as an art form and business there. There is no Christian/Muslim shame in Japan like in the West. Samuri, who got low pay, were wanting to see more Kabuki. Business fights broke out. Women were banned, so were young men. Had nothing to do with strip shows, but a business convenience. Mature men with shaved locks became the entertainment- Now it's just tradition.

  • your is also just as much fact as his below is

  • Kabuki was started by women alone. Samuri, who got low pay, were wanting to see more Kabuki. Business fights broke out. The Shogun had women banned, and later young men too. Had nothing to do with morality, but a business convenience. Mature men with shaved locks became the entertainment- It's not illegal for young men and woman to join now, but not really done. Mature men are just tradition now.

  • strange yes but there is a reason Women were banned from performing in Kabuki plays in 1629 because it was thought to disturb discipline. They were replaced by beautiful young men to play the female roles, but in 1652 they were banned for the same reasons as the women. Kabuki was allowed to continue with adult men playing all the roles, Yaro kabuki, which is the style that has became famous.

  • Shut up

  • c est magnifique!!

  • I'm very proud I'm part japanese, the beauty and tradition of my culture help my keep my head up when the world of Americans push me into shame of the past wars.

  • America does not own the world and cannot command it to cast shame upon Japan. It is a shame brought upon yourselves. Every country wrestles with its dark past.

  • Ignore those stupid comments.

  • Any chance of uploading more of these?

  • I am interested in the DVD but it is not clear to me from the yesasia page which of the DVDs contain which play and whether they have english subtitles (oral and/or text) or not ? I need a region 2 (Europe) DVD but english subtitles. Can anyone help ?

  • Hello friend I went to the yesasia page and it appears the DVD Sagi Musume - Tamasaburo Bando Butoushuu (DVD) (Vol.2) (Japan Version) is available for Region 2, but it does not have english subtitles or language.

I can tell you what plays this DVD has:

    Sagi Musume: The Heron Maiden

Kurokami: Black Hair (currently viewing here)

Kane ga Misaki: The Bell Promontory

    Inabune: Rice Boat

    Yamanba: Mountain Witch

  • @Martinit0 It has this English commentry which can be switched off if need be. This dvd would on UK dvds so it would play on region 2 DVDS.

  • Magnificient!
