have you ever had to go and donate to a sperm bank...in one period of time...that you actually had to keep ice to your balls later for the rest of the year cause they've turned dark blue and... dont work right?....thats how expensive this shit is ;P
Some people will always have a biased opinion towards tube amps. I have gotten the ultra to sound like a proper tube amp and it really does respond like one. The Axe FxII is another ball game, there is a lot you can do with these units once you really spend time with them. And after you find all the kind of things you can do with these then you'll know why the price tag is so high. Anyhow to each his own,it's a phenomenal unit.
Fun fact of this video: you can actually see, that the tone you hear isn´t created by the Axe FX, because his guitar is plugged into the ENGL Fireball, so that the preamp of the Fireball is used. The Axe FX is just in the loop as an effects processor, what is really the right use for it. Modeling will never reach the tone of the real amp, but the Axe FX is really by far the best effects processor ever built. Keep the tone to the tubes and the effects to the Axe FX and you will have the best tone
@sillyness3456 not really dude, most of the axe fx emulations actuallly sound better than a real amp :) that's why he no longer uses engl live and uses them as his main tone (powered by marshalls preamps)..so is the likes of tosin abasi from animals as leaders, dweezil zappa, periphery and countless others..the tube amp isn't always the best thing
@Spacca189 Those people use it because it is smaller and lighter than a big rack with all their effects needed, Tosin Abasi and Periphery use that thing, because their guitar tuning is so low, that most amps can´t handle it and they have many different sounds, so that they would need countless different amps to get their tone. Chris uses the Axe FX due to contract issues at Megadeth. A simulation can never be as good as the original. If you listen closely you will get the difference.
@sillyness3456 the main problem is that when playing live you dont actually hear the nice guitar amp tone but only a miced up version of it. and if that microphone placement isnt placed very nice and mixed well you will have a shit tone no matter how good the amp is.. :( poor engineers out there messing up good tones :( will never end, but axe fx can actually help a bit there i think..
@freakguitar1 Of course you are right, because there are lots of bad engineers out there, but the Axe FX only gives you 80% of the tone, so that there is still room for tweaking. Live you normally barely hear yourself without In-Ear monitoring, because even with monitoring-cabinets in front of you the drummer is still that loud, that you hear mostly drums... And if the engineer is bad, you will have a shitty tone, even with an Axe FX on D.I. to the mix... Truly no end on that...
@sillyness3456 using the Axe FX II in the studio can't be beat. it's a great investment..instead of buying 10 different heads into one studio rack which costs upwards of $10,000..then you gotta worry about mics, the room that it's recorded in, etc.
@metallica5252 But the sound of the real heads would be better... Are you a sound engineer? I know lots of these guys and each of them told me, that the Axe FX ist great for live gigs in really small venues, because you can have good tone, without noise on stage, what makes mixing simple. But in the studio it just isn´t the real thing. You need real amps to track really good guitar tones. Every band, that uses Axe FX only live uses real amps in the studio, even Periphery...
@metallica5252 As far as i know, Misha used an Engl Invader and a Diezel VH4 to track the self-titled album. The Axe FX was used for overdubs and stuff, I might be wrong, but i read that somewhere...
@sillyness3456 you may be right..but the axe-fx II wasn't even out at that time, you don't realize how much better this unit is compared to the ultra it's like night and day. I'm not gonna be one of those "analog freaks" lol who cares if it's not a real amp when it sounds that good
He meant to say "I avoided this for years, then they offered me a load of money" :P but in all fairness Axe FX is pretty cool, better than the line 6 bollocks!
@Esbanez I doubt Fractal had the money to throw at him. He was with Digitech before, and God knows those guys have money.
He doesn't seem like the type to let money decide on his gear anyway. Remember, this is the guy who's spent most of his career on inexpensive Ibanez axes.
@gnsumas You raise a valid point! Was mostly a joke anyway :P the Axe FX does seem pretty sweet, I would probably get one for quiet home recording, but personally for studio and live just cant beat the sound of a real tube amp!
@Esbanez I don't know about studio recordings, but his live tone sounds like the real deal personally, and I hear he leaves his Marshall EL34 100/100 off for live gigs nowadays (Dave probably doesn't know ahaha).
The Axe is real sweet, I've been using it for slightly over half a year, and unlike a traditional amp, there's that ability to tinker about that makes it so exciting. No matter what sound I get, the Axe is always ready to provide more than I'll need and then some. A must own for sure
@fender132435 I agree, but the only thing that put's me off getting a Pod HD pro is that you can't load custom impulse responses like you can with the Axe FX.
Firstly it only costs US$2200, cheaper than almost any of the hundreds of amps and effects it replicates perfectly. Secondly he and many others, like myself, use IT and nothing else. Think Steve Vie etc...
But hey, you keep telling yourself whatever. PCs will probably never catch on either.
Actually he runs the AxeFx in the loop as an effect processor. You dont have to use the amp models on the unit. As an effect Processor AxeFx is godly. Thats how I use mine.
@ThieleM Ah cool, well in fairness I have a spider IV so I wouldn't know for certain haha, I know a fair bit about amps but lack of funds mean it's nothing more than knowledge for now ;-)
@chuckmehh if he only uses the ENGL to power the AxeFx he would use the fx return because now he uses the pre and poweramp from the engl and that doesn't makes sense because the sound would be crappy
It doesnt sound crappy, that is also how I use AxeFX with my ENGL. I turn off the modeling features and just use the effects...it sounds amazing. It is just like having a refrigerator's size rack in one little rack space.
John Petrucci and Steve Vai also use the system as an effect processor rather than a Modeling center.
@RobiRoadkill -- Let me explain why you're a retard. He was never a full member of Nevermore. Not for one single day. He was brought in to add a 2nd guitar only for their touring lineup. The band wasn't going to use him in studio or for songwriting. Period. Now go get a life, poser.
@RobiRoadkill i wouldnt call never having to work a single day in your life in exchange for playing in one of the bands which inspired you for 20+ years selling out. u must be like 15. u ever have a full time job or worked for 40+ hours a week? it probably aint as fun as playing in megadeth!!! get real lol
@RobiRoadkill who wouldnt play for megadeth?!! honestly?! u would get soooo much money, let alone play shows around the world. u obviously are very young like 12 or 13 and understand nothing about local music scenes, underground scenes, mainstream, and the concept of SELLING OUT. going from nevermore to megadeth is def. NOT selling out!! they have similar fan bases!!! he probably loved megadeth before he even joined!! and i asked the fjob question to guess ur maturity, and u seem like a lil kid
@RobiRoadkill lol sorta. i mean u call random people sellouts and talk shit about people about their age on youtube. then u get schooled and cant say anything back. im not mad just cuz its funny haha ur funny but retarded at the same time. and im usually against laughing at retards... except in this case
Sure, no problem. I mean Dave Mustaine seems like such a reasonable guy/bandleader, so I'm sure he'd be super-supportive. After all it's not like Dave's insecure or power-hungry or anything, right???
He actually designed a clip that can hold any pick and pretty much any angle you want. This way he can go into a tapping part and not have to fold the pick into his palm or some other place. Its a great idea
I bought the Axe and sent it back. It doesn't sound as good as a Diezel Herbert, Diezel VH4, or Mesa Mark IV. Axe is better than Line6 though. If there is a certain tone you are after, buy the real amp... not software.
anyone know how this would work with an amp like he has here? does it go into the effects loop or does he just have his ENGL on display and it's not even on?
@metallica5252 It could work a couple of ways. My guess is that in this particular video he's bypassing the preamp in the ENGL and just using the power section to push the Axe into that cab.
@metallica5252 axe fx goes in to the fx return of the engl, so you're just using the engl poweramp. All the preamp tone comes from the axe fx. This is not new, Dave's used a rocktrol prophecy/line6 and digitech gsp1101 preamp with marshall poweramps since time began, it's just lighter to transport on tour. In the studio of course he uses tube amps, he even used the Randy rhoads marshall head and JVM410 for the latest album.
@metallica5252 yeah u have to make sure the fx loop is fully activated to 100% so it's completely bypassing the amps preamp. For instance if the knob was at zero, then you would have a 100% DRY signal, 0% WET, where your fx loop is essentially bypasssed
That is incorrect. When you crank the FX loop knob on an ENGL the loop is in parallel with no signal passing through. At 100% the loop is in series and adds any effects through at maximum. The loop level doesnt bypass the preamp in any way,
@ThieleM You're wrong, I have 3 ENGL amps mate, if you put a preamp or fx unit in to the fx return (when it's set to 100%) you completely bypass the amps own preamp. There is nothing plugged in to the send socket of course. Once you have done this only the amp's poweramp stage and master volume are functional.
YIKES.....I totally misread your original post...this is what happens when I post before having my morning espresso. I was talking about the regular plugging in the send and return jacks on the back of the amp. If you are only using the return jack then yeah, its as you noted.
@ThieleM yeah no worries mate. I myself use the loop properly with send and return but was just letting that guy know how to use a preamp like the fx using only the return for the poweramp stage. I actually dislike the axe fx, it just can't compare to the feel, dynamics and organic punch of the engl preamp
You have to remember one thing. A lot of these guys have endorsements with their Amp companies. No matter how well the Fractal can actually emulate the exact amp sound or even better for that matter.... They still won't give up the real amps due to their long lasting endorsements and relationships. For anyone that isn't yet out with a record or has no endorsements... Well The Fractal is perfect for them you can start by having this unit endorse you :) Cause it really does it all in one box :D
Of course that sound is NOT an amp simulation, it's the ENGL being processed by the AxeFX. This is not as bad as Blackstar's amp ads featuring Gus G. and playing music recorded before Blackstar was a company. LOL.
@FallenCole777 To be fair, he joined Megadeth late in the recording process, so he didn't get much chance to get much input on Endgame. Dave's gonna let him loose on the next album, I'm sure of it. Just watch.......or should I say HEAR, what they do next. :)
someone know the right connection with the fractal into a head amp?.... cuz i have the axe fx and a engl e670 el34 and i don't have enough power......around 40% minus than my real distortion head amp....(i have the last update with my AXE). tanks for response!!!!!!!
After he finished talking he was probably thinking to himself, "Yea, but no amount of amazing gear will make you sound like this..." And started playing
@FallenCole777 yes as long as he stays in MEGADETH i dont think i could survive another lead guitar lineup change... or any lineup change for that matter...
The Fractal unit is amazing for recording. The effects are incredible. Signal routing is powerful & easy to do. Live though, I still prefer a tube head into a 4x12.
If you don't own or have never played through an axe fx then you have no reason to comment on its sound. By the way, why would he plug in to an antiquated tube amp when he has a perfectly good fractal unit right there. How do you like them apples flamers? Meshuggah, Broderick, Rammstein, Vai......just saying.....
Let me clear up any confusion as I was in the room when this was being recorded. Chris was using an Ultra with power amp simulations turned "on" into the return of the Engl into a mic'd 4x12. It was basically recorded at bedroom level.
On tour, currently Chris uses the Axe-FX direct to FOH. He as a power amp and 4x12 on stage that he uses for a back line vibe.
If you are asking this question you do not know what kind of a beast the axe-fx is. It really does sound like about 50 authentic tube amps. Don't believe me? Check who's using them on Fractals website. Little hint is Steve vai and John Petrucci.
@Mo7Vsta he's using the engl to power the axe-fx the reason he probably uses it is because you can fine tweak every single detail and make a wide variety of sounds not just consisting of the engl sound and very accurate to the amps it's said to model unlike line 6 i hate when people compare this awesome piece of equipment to it

Chris Broderick needs to write a solo CD because every band he's been in is so different, from Jag Panzer, to Nevermore, and now Megadeth...i wonder how his own songwriting would compare to his past projects
@glassprisoner417 he would have done it long before, if he's confident enough on his own musical creativity. but though chris is extremely good on guitar, he needs a band for him to be able to impose himself guitarwise. In megadeth, dave writes all the songs and he just lay his solos.
My name's Chris Broderick, and I bet you can't pay for this.

In the studio of course he uses tube amps, he even used the Randy rhoads marshall head and JVM410 for the latest album.
asianaxeman 10 months ago
@asianaxeman ok so it just goes into the fx return but not the send?
metallica5252 10 months ago
@metallica5252 yeah , you can put any fx unit /preamp in to the fx return just to use it's poweramp. Just make sure the fx loop is on and at 100% WET
asianaxeman 10 months ago
@asianaxeman what do you mean 100% wet? you mean the return knob turned to 10?
metallica5252 10 months ago
@asianaxeman by 100% wet you mean turn the return knob to 10?
metallica5252 10 months ago
@metallica5252 yeah u have to make sure the fx loop is fully activated to 100% so it's completely bypassing the amps preamp. For instance if the knob was at zero, then you would have a 100% DRY signal, 0% WET, where your fx loop is essentially bypasssed
asianaxeman 10 months ago
@asianaxeman ok thanks man i appreciate the help!
metallica5252 10 months ago
@asianaxeman
That is incorrect. When you crank the FX loop knob on an ENGL the loop is in parallel with no signal passing through. At 100% the loop is in series and adds any effects through at maximum. The loop level doesnt bypass the preamp in any way,
ThieleM 5 months ago
@ThieleM You're wrong, I have 3 ENGL amps mate, if you put a preamp or fx unit in to the fx return (when it's set to 100%) you completely bypass the amps own preamp. There is nothing plugged in to the send socket of course. Once you have done this only the amp's poweramp stage and master volume are functional.

@asianaxeman
YIKES.....I totally misread your original post...this is what happens when I post before having my morning espresso. I was talking about the regular plugging in the send and return jacks on the back of the amp. If you are only using the return jack then yeah, its as you noted.
My bad.
Cheers guy....
ThieleM 5 months ago

Well The Fractal is perfect for them you can start by having this unit endorse you :) Cause it really does it all in one box :D
immortalsoloist 1 year ago
Of course that sound is NOT an amp simulation, it's the ENGL being processed by the AxeFX. This is not as bad as Blackstar's amp ads featuring Gus G. and playing music recorded before Blackstar was a company. LOL.

@FallenCole777 To be fair, he joined Megadeth late in the recording process, so he didn't get much chance to get much input on Endgame. Dave's gonna let him loose on the next album, I'm sure of it. Just watch.......or should I say HEAR, what they do next. :)

Chris is WAY MORE than Megadeth would ever be. Both in theoretical knowledge and technique. And this comes from a Megadeth and Dave fan.

@dimgrav theoretical knowledge and technique don't make music

@MrUsedBooks Agreed, but Chris never had the chance to create something himself. Such a waste of talent.

@FallenCole777 in the first video he talks about playing flamenco and jazz....so yes he should definently make a solo album!!!

@FallenCole777 yes as long as he stays in MEGADETH i dont think i could survive another lead guitar lineup change... or any lineup change for that matter...

The Fractal unit is amazing for recording. The effects are incredible. Signal routing is powerful & easy to do. Live though, I still prefer a tube head into a 4x12.

seems like a bit of a waste of time... making a video just to tell us that his amp is better than any other one that you or me could buy xD
dobby240 1 year ago
If you don't own or have never played through an axe fx then you have no reason to comment on its sound. By the way, why would he plug in to an antiquated tube amp when he has a perfectly good fractal unit right there. How do you like them apples flamers? Meshuggah, Broderick, Rammstein, Vai......just saying.....
mrbeatdoctor 1 year ago
Tom King Quote - Fractal Audio
Let me clear up any confusion as I was in the room when this was being recorded. Chris was using an Ultra with power amp simulations turned "on" into the return of the Engl into a mic'd 4x12. It was basically recorded at bedroom level.
On tour, currently Chris uses the Axe-FX direct to FOH. He as a power amp and 4x12 on stage that he uses for a back line vibe.

@realkman666 I would pick the Axe-Fx too so much more versatility then the ENGL.

i just want to know whats wrong with that perfectly good Engl?
Mo7Vsta 1 year ago
@Mo7Vsta
If you are asking this question you do not know what kind of a beast the axe-fx is. It really does sound like about 50 authentic tube amps. Don't believe me? Check who's using them on Fractals website. Little hint is Steve vai and John Petrucci.
MistahhB 1 year ago
@Mo7Vsta he's using the engl to power the axe-fx the reason he probably uses it is because you can fine tweak every single detail and make a wide variety of sounds not just consisting of the engl sound and very accurate to the amps it's said to model unlike line 6 i hate when people compare this awesome piece of equipment to it

Chris Broderick needs to write a solo CD because every band he's been in is so different, from Jag Panzer, to Nevermore, and now Megadeth...i wonder how his own songwriting would compare to his past projects
glassprisoner417 1 year ago 199
@glassprisoner417 I bet Chris Broderick got the idea of paying and liking all music from Buckethead.
Chris Broderick Probably = Inspired by Buckethead
SpartanLaserCanon 11 months ago
@glassprisoner417 he would have done it long before, if he's confident enough on his own musical creativity. but though chris is extremely good on guitar, he needs a band for him to be able to impose himself guitarwise. In megadeth, dave writes all the songs and he just lay his solos.
