I think it's normal for just about any engine with high mileage to sound noisy and clattery while cold. I was driving a 2001 Cavalier for a while that is over 300,000 km, it sounds pretty clattery and chattery cold, heck it's noisy even warm. I don't know how common it is for people to do "serious" valve train maintenance, that is one place where a lot of noise can develop when wear occurs, the gaps increase, springs weaken, etc. accessories also often add to engine bay noise.
You need to learn something about cars ... Even though its at Zero, a car should be able to start - I had one of these exactly .. always started no problem... W/O Engine heater with it at or below your stated temperature -- Get your car looked at
@MrTitusRbandoline I was just comparing the engine noise with and without a heater, at 0C and at -11C. I think a block heater does make a difference on the engine noise, esp. when it's -30C.
My 2001 ZX3 sounds a lot like that still. Mines at 200,000 miles atm. The engine shakes in mine though. I've never been able to figure out why it's shaking.
thats how my cars sounds and there is alot of vibration i have 112,000 miles on it
