Monica had the strongest voice of the three, but Aaliyah had the strongest stage presence, and she was able to bring everything together (the dancing, the singing, the stage presence). She did it with perfection. And Brandy I would say had the best PR. She was advertised more than any other artist and spent more time on television than any other artist which was one of the factors that contributed to her popularity.
I wish I could go back in time with just these 3. Back then it was real talent studio and live performances. Now if you hear some artists perform live they sound like shit! There is only few that actually sounds good live, and Aaliyah, Brandy and Monica is one of those few.
We've gotten to see both Monica and Brandy vocally mature, but it's sad that we never got to see where Aaliyah voice would be now. At the time of her death, her range was near 3.5 octaves which is huge AF for a 22 year old. Monica's is near 4 octaves now and Brandy's is in the 3.5 octave range, so I wonder where Aaliyah's range would be now
I will always have respect for all 3 of these women. They were up against the best back in the 90's selling platinum albums and proved that they belonged at a young age. See back in the 70's, 80's and 90's, artists had to proved their talent. The game is so messed up now, it's really sad.

They are the prettiest R&B singers. They are great, and they were true to themselves. <3 They grew up to be great individuals.. Miss when music had good meanings.
The 90’s saw many artists, but Aaliyah always stuck out to me. Her smooth dance moves and sexy yet respectable style along with enticing song lyrics took you as a fan to another level. Hit after hit, you held onto Aaliyah. She wasn’t just a pretty face, she was a total package
Brandy was, is and always have is been the best of the three. Her voice is amazing and that's all there is to it. The woman sings, takes her time like she doesn't have anything to hide. You just hear each and every note and each one is PERFECT. I love it. And no crazy screaming.
And then there were three =) Monica was "Miss Thang". Very mature for her age, and her voice was so strong & Powerful! Aaliyah was the shy one, very laid back, the "TomBoy". Her voice was angelic & melodic. Brandy was America's sweetheart with the perfect image at the time. Always saying the right things & being charming. Her voice was unique. She had this smoky soulful tone that was distinctive & original. All 3 were totally different in sound & imaging. Damn I miss the 90s!
It's senseless to compare these three young women. All three do something different; all three all truly gifted. Why not enjoy EACH one for each one's own UNIQUENESS? All three have contributed to musical history; all three have a musical legacy.
i think its funny how the majority of you dont know the difference between "runs" and "vibrato". Aaliyah had the most creative runz, then brandy and then monica. Smh. I love all 3 of there voicez. Back n the day.. brandy lacked a lot of range and power.... TODAY she will kill monica. She started singing wth her soul and soundz amazing singing acapella. Shez come up! M's power to B's harmonies to A's falsetto, M's clear alto to B's smoky alto to A's angelic alto, M's soul singer ear to B's jazz singer ear to A's pop singer ear, M's vibrato to B's tone to A's transitions...strength/uniqueness/subtlety... together, they occupy everything a vocalists would want.

like brandy said in her song should i go "this industry was more than a different world when it was just me,monica and babygirl(aaliyah)". aaliyah,brandy and monica are the princesses of r&b. they came out around the same time and same age. brandy was more successful than both aaliyah and monica in the teens years but as time went on aaliyah was blowin up bigger than ever and she started to outshine both monica and brandy. all 3 are talented lovely women tho.
@thetruth4u I agree with the statement about Brandy. I felt like she had the kind of voice that should have COMPLETELY changed music. But she never lived up to her voice's potential. Almost as if her voice has a ridiculous amount of personality, but she, as an individual, lacks the depth of her voice.

Three completely different artists. All with diff strengths. Aaliyah is clearly the most versatile...has most range, and clearest tone. Brandy has most unique voice, and her control is incredible. Monica is a powerhouse, confident, but her voice just doesn't move me. Aaliyah had that Angel sounding voice, she never overdoes it on a song, just takes her time with it and sings it cool and smooth- a true vocalist! you can tell she was classically trained. She's no1 for me, Brandy close 2nd.
I grew up listening to this music over and over again. Definitely my favorite artists of their time, back when music was still about talent before all the glam glitz and fame...and auto tune.
To be honest I don't think the three could be compared. All three were great and had very distinct unique voices and all GREAT in the genre. I actually liked all three but preferred Monica not saying one is better than the others...Let's not compare because all three had the 90's on lockdown forreal. Rest in Peace Aaliyah you are trully missed. Mo and Brany are friends now and hate it when people put the other down to build the other up...Let's just suport both of them bc not too many real r&b
Monica - clearly has the most raw power of the three, but she's not musically or vocally creative.
Brandy - has a distinctive smoky rasp that's gotten better with age. Glad she stopped trying to be Whitney. She's much more expressive now and restrained with her runs, but has hit and miss musical taste.
Aaliyah - Had a clear bell-tone, was versatile and supple with effortless *timing* and taste. Easily the most forward-thinking and musically adventurous of the three.
@Takver why do you say brandy is hit an miss with her musical tastes? she sings the most amazingly beautiful songs. she does meaningful music meaningful. her music is awesome. i think her tastes is always on point. :D
Honestly, I love all three women. There voices alone shuts down most of the female singers of today. Tragically, Aaliyah lost her life before her star light was complely done showing the world what she could do. They all got the job done so y put them up against each other.
Brandy is in a vocal catergory all by herself. Monica and Aaliyah can sing no doubt, but brandy is more than just a singer. Her musicianship is just genius..
Monica has a truly awesome voice, Brandy a tone most singers envy, but Aaliyah had something special...beyond a great voice and gorgeous face. I miss u baby!

it let's me remember that there was a time when vocal artists actually had to SING to be in competition with one another. Sure, there were videos and choreography, etc. but at the end of the day, people had to back it up with something. nowadays, it's like they do you a favor if they actually sing live...what happened in the last 10 years?

@thetruth4u I agree with the statement about Brandy. I felt like she had the kind of voice that should have COMPLETELY changed music. But she never lived up to her voice's potential. Almost as if her voice has a ridiculous amount of personality, but she, as an individual, lacks the depth of her voice.

Three completely different artists. All with diff strengths. Aaliyah is clearly the most versatile...has most range, and clearest tone. Brandy has most unique voice, and her control is incredible. Monica is a powerhouse, confident, but her voice just doesn't move me. Aaliyah had that Angel sounding voice, she never overdoes it on a song, just takes her time with it and sings it cool and smooth- a true vocalist! you can tell she was classically trained. She's no1 for me, Brandy close 2nd.

To be honest I don't think the three could be compared. All three were great and had very distinct unique voices and all GREAT in the genre. I actually liked all three but preferred Monica not saying one is better than the others...Let's not compare because all three had the 90's on lockdown forreal. Rest in Peace Aaliyah you are trully missed. Mo and Brany are friends now and hate it when people put the other down to build the other up...Let's just suport both of them bc not too many real r&b

Monica - clearly has the most raw power of the three, but she's not musically or vocally creative.
Brandy - has a distinctive smoky rasp that's gotten better with age. Glad she stopped trying to be Whitney. She's much more expressive now and restrained with her runs, but has hit and miss musical taste.
Aaliyah - Had a clear bell-tone, was versatile and supple with effortless *timing* and taste. Easily the most forward-thinking and musically adventurous of the three.

Honestly, I love all three women. There voices alone shuts down most of the female singers of today. Tragically, Aaliyah lost her life before her star light was complely done showing the world what she could do. They all got the job done so y put them up against each other.

it let's me remember that there was a time when vocal artists actually had to SING to be in competition with one another. Sure, there were videos and choreography, etc. but at the end of the day, people had to back it up with something. nowadays, it's like they do you a favor if they actually sing live...what happened in the last 10 years?
