  • Its too bad the only good video of just the goal is called I hate you David Volek. Lets go Islanders

  • Idk how you can blame barasso on this it was samuelssons fault for getting caught deep

  • Lol. That was awesome. Thank you David Volek! :)

  • the 93 pens and 94 and 96 wings were two of the best teams never to win the cup. the iles won this series, simply because they wanted it more. the pens were complacent and the pressure to threepeat wore them down. new york had the luxury of going balls to the wall and letting it rip because they were such huge underdogs, they really had nothing to lose.

  • Nearly twenty years later, the Isles are still manhandling the overhyped Pens and giving Mario Lemieux fits of agida. Trevor Gillies for NHL Commissioner!

  • @sh43944

I'm an Islanders fan who ironically liked that Penguins team a lot. With Jagr, Stevens, Tocchet, Francis, Mullen, Murphy, Barasso..and by the way Mario Lemieux, they had a hell of a team. They were good enough to beat the President's Trophy winning Rangers a year earlier without Mario. However, the Islanders without their best player Pierre Turgeon, were faced with having to beat that PENS team 4 times out of a possible 7. That was hard to imagine. But they did. That's not luck.

  • Pen fans are always complaining sad.

  • Kevin Stevens paid the price in this game with his check on Rich Pilon...

  • The reason Barasso is Guilty in this is because he had already let in an Awful goal earlier in the Night when King sent a shot from almost outside the zone on net and it went in.

  • Playoff is different competition. If you win the Presidents trophy not win the SC maybe is the curse. Look at the Caps last year in the regular season is dominant but failed the guy name Halak or Hawks in 1991 106 points and lost 1.round, NYR 92 105 points 50 wins lost 2.round

  • You look at this video. Its 3 on 1 defenseman Samuelsson, Straka is stuck on a third Isles player. Volek scores shoot maybe skating to the net and scores anyway. I dont understand, why BARRASSO is guilty with this.

  • @Martanci He's not guilty. I'm an Isles fan but also a Barrasso fan since he played in Buffalo. This was just a great play by Ferraro and Volek and Barrasso didn't stand a chance. It's credit to good offense taking advantage of shitty defense. Not to say the Pens defense was a shitty team, jsut for that moment it was. I remember this series.

  • This was the only series ever that I rooted fgor the Islanders. I am a lifelong, miserable, suffering Rangers fan, but I hate the pens more than the isles.

  • my favourite goal of all time.... gave the Habs an easier road to the cup in 1993!

  • Shut your fucken mouth

  • I was those damn Pigeon jerseys!

  • I'm a diehard isles fan. Obviously Mario was recovering from cancer, which helped the isles, alhough Turgeon was injured and barely palyed in the series. The pens had won the last 2 cups. i think they lost for a variety of reasons, they played more games then anyone in the last 3 years, a general arrogance, Healy playing the best hockey of his careerand the Stevens injury.

  • Arbour had to build from scratch and although Arbour worked under Bowman in St.Louis, he owes credit to Punch Imlach who he played for when he played for the Leafs when they won their final cup in '67. Arbour took this team and made them shock the hockey world like only Al Arbour can, the man is brilliant.

  • The Isles also won the series because of Arbour, I will say it here and always, Arbour is the best coach the NHL has ever had, he is better than Bowman for a very simple reason.

Every team Bowman has gotten was already one of the best teams in the league,

  • Jagr was seriously interfered with when trying to get back into the 2 on 1

  • People say this years upset of Montreal beating the Pens was the biggest, that is bullcrap.

I would like to see the Habs beat Pitt without their BEST offensive weapon. The Isles defeated the Pens without Turgeon, the guy scored freaking 58 goals that year.

  • @mrceebees14 We didn't have our best d-man, arguably one of our 2 or 3 best players to boot. I think that's pretty damn impressive. Ok I guess if Cammalleri was gone it'd be curtains. But in those playoffs, Turgeon was not the primary scorer goin before his injury. It was Ferraro. Without Ferraro, they could've had Turgeon and not gone very far.

  • @journeythruthepast You must have no watch the series, it was Healy who stepped it up the most out of all the players we had. Turgeon made up 37% of our total scoring by the time we made the playoffs, without Pierre we don't make the playoffs. Ferraro?

  • Oh but also lots of Isles fans claim a healthy Turgeon would've beaten the Habs despite the fact Turgeon was considered too soft and too one-way to be a playoff beast. Like Thornton, but not as bad. Turgeon was never a huge gamebreaker in the post-season and though 1993 was his peak, I don't think he singlehandedly makes up for a series they lost in 5 games, 2 of which weren't close (games 1 and 5). I know what Pierre was capable of and beat Roy and the 93 Habs he was not, even at full health.

  • @journeythruthepast They never claimed he was healthy and if you know anything about sports, you NEVER tell the other team if one of your stars is healthy or not.

That is a 101 lesson in hockey.

Turgeon was not a known playoff goal hound, but this playoffs he did very well, he CRUSIFIED the Capitals with goals and assists. He would have been just as effective against the Pens.

  • @journeythruthepast NO team is at full health when they get into the playoffs. That is another 101 lesson, if you are not in pain in some way, you aren't going to win the cup.

So you watch or even play hockey? Because everyone knows this right off the bat.

  • @journeythruthepast Try Steve Thomas who has his BEST playoffs ever, Maly and Kaspar as rookies stepped it up, Green, Hogue, Mullen, everyone stepped it up to get the Isles plast the Pens. There is no excuse to the Pens, you lost that series because 1) the Isles wanted it more and 2) Barrasso sucked

  • I'm not an Isles fan mrceebees14. And Ferraro had 13 goals in the playoffs that year and 12 of them came in the first 10 affairs. He was the catalyst for a while but yes it took a full team effort to beat the Pens. I just don't get why people think the Canadiens beating them this year was a major fluke and they got lucky when their best d-man was out the whole way except for 10 minutes of game 1. 1993 Isles were a bigger upset though, I have to agree. 1992-93 was the best Pens team ever.

  • faggot volek

  • Volek=GOD

    LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • With John Taveres the Islanders are starting to have what resembles a future now, maybe they'll remain on Long Island, I hope they do, there is too much tradition there, and if they moved somewhere else it just wouldn't seem right.

  • Healy completely outplayed Barrasso and it was the single-most difference in the series. Arguably the two finest NHL coaches go head-to-head (Bowman-Arbour). This and Arbour's 1975 coaching job with the Isles, when they rallied from a 3-0 deficit may be the highlight of his career despite the four straight cups. As an Isles fan, I cherished this run to the semis.. Still wished we had beaten Montreal through. Damn you Dale Hunter!

  • yeah, and don't forget the nice showing islanders made in the 2002 playoffs that was cut short because leafs darcy tucker cheap shotted mike peca. F*** the leafs and F*** the canadiens, both! :-X

  • Hahaha fuck you penguins!

  • Dude, I'm a Pens fan and I have to say I'm very disappointed with you living in the past. OK, I understand that it was a major loss, but understand that if Kevin Stevens or Mario Lemieux didn't get injured, we would've won. It's time to live right now. Be happy that we won the Stanley Cup, there's no reason to live in this moment 17 years ago.

Still 92-93 was a great season. At least Mario won the Art Ross title, we won 17 games in a row, and we received the President's Trophy.

  • Well as an Islander fan I cling to that moment cuz we haven't had too many reasons to celbrate but I love em anyway. Don't forget we beat you guys with our best player too, remember turgeon missed most or all of that series.

  • You were good in 1993, I will admit that. I hate to see a fellow Pens fan like pens91 live in the past. Hope you guys do well with John Tavares. I'm sure he'll help you out like Mario Lemieux did to the Penguins when they were struggling.

  • I agree... Pens are the Champs

so no need really to look back

  • 2nd Place in the Conference!! Whooo! 1st in the Division. Look out, New Jersey!

  • Jeff Grim is 100% correct! Where the hell is the 5th Penguins skater on the ice? This overtime goal looks like a powerplay goal, but, it wasn't. Was a Pens skater asleep on the bench when they did a line change? That would explain the 3 on 2 on David Volek's goal, which would've never have happened on a 5 on 5, NFW.

  • the islanders are the best. Mabey not in 2008 when they were the worst but they will be the best in the 2009 season

  • You are childish!

  • The Montreal Canadiens should give both LA Kings Wayne Gretzky and Isles David Volek honorary 1993 Stanley Cup rings because they were responsible for eliminating 2 teams that would've knocked them out of the 1993 playoffs--

the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

  • The Leafs would have never beat the Habs in the 93 finals. Leaf fans always have a way of thinking their team is better than it really is. Don't forget the Leafs went 7 games in all three of their rounds that spring, and their loss to LA had more to do with running out of gas than that non-call on Gretzky. Had they advanced against the Habs in the Final, they wouldn't have had anything left for a well-rested Habs team.

  • I've seen this play dozens of times and can't figure out where the Pens fifth skater is.

  • @JeffGrim

    Here's a quote from Jagr's autobiography:

"Now it was overtime. We pounded the Islanders as if it was the first period, and we looked as if we were stronger. Mario and Ronnie did have chances to end the game, but Healy stopped them. I also had a good chance, but then it happened. We rotated badly and only had four players on the ice, three of them in the Islanders' defensive zone. And then the puck went to David Volek at the red line..."

  • @fcoyle27 Thank you for that fcoyle. I always thought they only had four on the ice. Amazing how the fundamentals come into play so much in overtime.

  • @fcoyle27 Cool.

Jagr is honest, although he is still a world class pussy.

  • I remember watching that game live. I almost took a fit when Volek scored the series winning goal by breaking the TV. I was so mad.

  • Volek was cleary offsides on that play. Those refs need glasses to see that. He was clearly offsides

  • your clearly retarded because u can't spell clearly and he was no where near offside

  • I'm a lifelong yinzer and Pens fan, and I always hated Barrasso. I'll never understand how this "money goalie" reputation got started. The 2 years we won the cup, his combiend GAA was 3.56, and was 3.66 from '89-'96.

Our departure from the '93 playoffs is unforgivable. Way to step up your game after Mario's comeback from cancer, asshole

  • what about when Mario missed half the pens 92 run and Barrasso carried them. I think it's ridiculous how pen fans put all the blame on him for this loss. What did Kevin Stevens do for the series, he did play in six and half games, how about Jagr being shut down, where was Joey Mullen? etc

  • no jo no david to je borec

  • It is quiet again in pittsburgh

  • lol right when i read that he said it

  • not trying to take anything from my beloved islanders but who was that running interference on the pitt defender which allowed volek that shot uncontested???

  • That was good ole Vladimir Malakhov- all 7' of him. THat team beat the Penguins without Turgeon too. Hopefully there'll be more moments like that in the future. Especially since Milbury is gone.

  • And thus began the slow, lurching, painful demise of the New York Islanders.

  • David Volek byl náhodou borec !!!

  • I like the penguins jerseys in this video. I hate the full penguin skating with the hockey stick it looks terrible

  • Next to the Yankees blowing 4 straight against Boston, this is easily one of the biggest choke jobs in sports and certainly the NHL.

And they did it without Pierre Turgeon.

  • So Sweet !!!!

  • I'm an Islanders fan and I'm glad they kicked the Penguins fuckin asses just like in 1975 and 1982.

  • God Bless David Volek

And Fuck You Pittsburgh Penguins Fans!!!!!

All Pittsburgh Penguins Fans can suck my dick!!!

  • I just threw up all over my screen.

  • amazing goal, Volek WOOO

  • Volek is a legend

  • that was the best penguins team of in their history. also i think al arbour out-coached scotty bowman. (which is a hard thing to do also)

  • the pens stink..the closest they will get to the cup again is when the red wings come to town.

  • nice prediction! hahaha

  • I remember that goal going in and celabrating the habs stanley cup thank u volec

  • Hey, the Pens just got outplayed in '93. I remember them clearly chasing the Islanders the whole game (and the whole series for that matter) and they just did'nt have any finnish left in them after the tying goal, which they were reluctant to get.

  • David Volek and Sid Bream snuffed out the last embers of my childhood. Bastards.

  • Those names(Fransisco Cabrera got the hit that Bream scored on) are permanently seared into my brain.

  • I miss Al.

  • One of the greatest upsets in hockey history.

With a 100% healthy Turgeon the Isles would've won the cup that year.

  • No, they were no match for Montreal, even with Turgeon, that ended in five, Turgeon can't win three matches alone.

  • Pittsburgh had a better team than Montreal, and the Isles beat them despite not having Turgeon. He still wasn't healthy for the Montreal series.

  • No no no no... the Pens were at the end of their reign. Most importantly, Roy got hot. He wasn't known as the best big game goalie of his time for nothing. Even if the Pens got past the Isles they were in really tough against the Habs. Let's face it, if you goalie is cold, like Barrasso was, you don't have much of a chance. Sneaky Pete was notorious for going cold in Montreal. It's why he was traded out of Buffalo. He couldn't beat the Habs in 90 or 91, he sure wasn't going to in 93.

  • Everybody picked Pittsburgh to win the cup. They were dominant in the regular season, and I don't really see how you could support the notion that the Habs were better. As far as Roy vs. Turgeon, we'll never know because Turgeon was hurt, which is the whole point.

  • There were already signs in the regular season that the Pens were getting a little long in the tooth. Mario wasn't quite as dominant. Tochette was slowing down. Trotier wasn't there to keep Jagr and Sandstrom in line. No, the average fan may have thought that the Pens were ready for another great march but I could see definent signs of weakness.

The biggest problem was that Barraso was as cold as could be. Roy was firecracker hot and thats why Montreal would have made the Pens look bad.

  • Any team that was looking for Sneaky Pete to lead them in the playoffs was barking up the wrong tree. Turgeon was never a great playoff performer. In fact, it was his lack of playoff-performance over the course of his career that affects his place in history.

In the regular season he was a cleaver and shifty player. He had a great stick and seemed to think the game like a lesser version of Gretzky. However, in the playoffs there is less time to make plays and space is at a premium. CHOKE

  • The 93 playoffs is seen as a would'a, could'a, should'a time for many teams. The Leafs, Sabres, Isles, Nords and Kings think that they could have taken the Habs if only they had gotten a few bounces. The reality was that Patrick Roy prevented those shift-in-momentum moments from ever happening.

It's this simple: Roy outplays Potvin, Hexy, Heals, Fuhr and Hrudy in any of the parallel universes that Einstein or Brain Greene can imagine. Roy was in his prime and never played better. The End.

  • "Signs in the regular season"? The Pens got, what? 15 more points than the Habs? The Isles already beat the team that was far and away the most talented. I'm not saying that they'd have won the cup again if not for the Isles, but they would've been the favorites for sure. I'm not guaranteeing that the Isles would've won the series with Turgeon healthy (you can be the one making all the crazy "The End" guarantees), but they'd have had a real shot with him at 100%.

  • The End was meant to say that I had gone on about the subject for too long.

The Isles wouldn't have been close, even with Turgeon. He was a CHOKER. He rarely did anything in playoffs. His performance against the Caps was exactly that, a playoff performance against the Caps. The Isles were good/lucky to get to that point but they were never really in the series.

  • The Isles went 5 games (2 of which they lost in OT) without Turgeon against Montreal. The other two they lost were in Montreal.

  • Two of their losses came in overtime. It doesn't get much closer than that. The idea that they were "never in the series" is pretty ludicrous, and you're saying that Turgeon playing well against Washington...what, doesn't count? It pretty much destroys your argument that Turgeon wouldn't deliver in the 1993 playoffs to cite an example of him delivering in the 1993 playoffs.

  • Ironic you mention that- Turgeon became a Hab two years later.

  • Turgeon did the same thing when he played for the Habs. He looked great in the regular season but could never do it when it really mattered. It's too bad because he was a crafty player who was fun to watch but when the playoffs rolled around you just knew that he was going to go missing.

  • Ray Ferraro and David Volek say SHUT THE FUCK UP...

  • I'll never forget that goal. I was 14, my dad was a huge Islanders fan....boy, did he let out a yell!

  • I love you David Volek

  • what was Barrasso doing that far out of the net?!? I think it was the curse of the pigeion! Why did they ever put that hidious bird on our uniforms?!? It demorilized our team, there was no way they could win a cup while wearing that THING!

  • You mean the ones that everyone on the team, especially Lemieux, hated?

  • wow...talk about a blast from the past

  • tom barraso is my old 4th grade teachers husband

  • I know how it feels, the Pens beat the Sabres in Game 7 OT in 2001, but this just had to be like a thorn on a pressure point

  • fucker. we shoulda won the cup for the third year running

  • If the Pens should have won the cup, they would have beat the Islanders. But they didn't.

    LET'S GO ISLANDERS

  • Fuck the islanders....GO PENS!!!!!

  • I still cringe at the mention of David Volek. I never heard so many obscenities at one time at the bar I was watching the game at.

  • That sucked. I remember that like it was yesterday. My dog almost mauled myself and my friends as we yelled in disgust.

  • Healy outduelled Barasso big time in this series. Both goalies had bad games in the series, but when it counted Healy came up big. Oh well, doesn't matter since Barasso was overall the superior goalie. His wins, vezina and calder and 2 cups speak volumes over career backup alternative motormouth Healy. But in 1993, Healy was the star who stole the series. Ray Ferraro played out of his mind too.

  • VOLEK!!!!!!

  • Good times good times

  • What a great goal. May 14th 1993...Pens fans just absolutely crushed by that goal. Sidney the diver may whine his way to a cup but not in Pittsburgh. Fleury is garbage and that D is brutal. Have fun watching him cry about penalty calls

  • If Turgeon was healthy most experts would say the Isles would be lucky to win a game, with Turgeon out I dont think anyone thought the Isles would have a shot in hell at winning a game, this is just proof of how Al Arbour is the greatest coach of all time, perhaps in any sport

  • Love the call by Chris Cuthbert:

"With Ferraro, here they come, two on one, Volek shoots, SCORES!!!!! DAVID VOLEK! ISLANDERS!"

As he did in 1975, 1982, and in 1993; Al Arbour did it again...to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Completely outmanned by the star-studded Penguins, Al Arbour is nothing short of brilliant.

  • I love Volek!

  • Al Arbour...greatest coach of all time..

  • tom barrasso sucked ass from far out..motherfucker needed glasses

  • The Isles had no business winning this series without Turgeon. Probably one of the greatest Stanley Cup playoff upsets.

  • DAVID VOLEK!!!!

  • LOL... Look at all the Penguin haters. It's OK... We're gonna get a couple more now with Crosby in command of the entire league. Everyone's gonna bend over for Sid -- LORD STANLEY, HERE WE COME AGAIN!

  • um no

  • I Loved that game. My cable box was messed up so I had to watch it through the squigly lines on the tv. Pens Suck!

  • makes me fuckin puke... i remember punchn the wall @ age 15.fuckin ulf should have knew his role.

  • A rookie Marty Straka was caught way up ice. In 1993, defense was still a foreign word to many. 2-3 years later everything had changed so much that the 3-on-1, 2-on-1 breakdown in OT would never happen and the goalie would be really bulked up in a butterfly position. to make the save and the game's final score would've been 2-1, decided in triple overtime.

  • god bless my pens..

  • God Bless the New York Islanders!!!!!!

  • I hate the Islanders but watching the Pens lose their run at a three peat didn't bother me at all.

  • Simply put folks...one of the greatest upsets in the history of the Stanley Cup Playoffs...EVER..........

  • Best part about that goal: Mario was on the ice for it. Bahahahahahaaa!!

  • What does that mean you douche?

  • I was 7 years old, watching this game just a week after I'd split open my head celebrating our win over the Capitals and that piece of shit Dale Hunter. Quite frankly, excepting Charlie Hayes' catch in foul territory, this is the biggest televised sporting moment of my life. And it still is, since the Isles seem to want to blow their shot at the 7th or 8th seed in the Eastern Conference this year...

  • I remember that game. I'm an Islander fan, and that was pure drama, especially when the Pens tied it up near the end of regulation. Emotional roller-coaster. What a thrill when Volek scored. And you folks are right, the Pens would have won the Cup again that year had it not been for AL ARBOUR.

  • U should remember it, it was the last time we won a playoff series!!

  • That was a weak goal to let in, terrible to come out like that, I don't know what Barrasso was thinking. This put the Stanley Cup UP FOR GRABS, literally, after the Pens were clearly the favorite to win it that year, and surprisingly, and tragically they didn't. But, they'll hopefully see another cup, as long as they don't move to another city. LET'S GO PENS!

  • Typical game by Tom Barasso. You fire like 50 shots at him, he'll probably stopp all of them. If you fire only 8 shots he'll let in like four of them in.

  • I know right...

  • The 3rd goal was worse. I think Thomas scored it or something. It was shot from just over the red line but went off a d-man's stick and Barasso was totally off-guard and it went by him. He let in a few softies in the games on Long Island too.

  • yeah volek scored but it was those butt ugly uniforms that gave us bad karma, if somethings not broke dont fix it...they have sucked ass ever since they changed the logo....see look now we go back to the old logo and were winning again

  • I've always wondered why they changed the logo after winning two straight cups. Bad karma, man. I think the Houston Rockets did the same thing. I guess they tried to capitalize on the popularity of their teams.

  • LOL dude, we love David Volek. I don't hate the Pens, this was a great series, the Isles were able to end the Pens run of 2 straight Stanley cups without the complete services of Turgeon. I have no hate for the Pens, I hope they keep the team in Pittsburgh. Good stuff!
