I'm regretting already commenting on this what ever it is video only to say this; if you want to make up sword techniques and create a video that's your privilege but please do not put 'Samurai sword' in the description out of respect for the samurai and those who legitimately practice traditional forms of kenjutsu.
You block with the sharpened edge because thats how the swords would meet naturally. If you didnt block with the sharpened edge, then doing so with the boken would only create bad habits. I can understand not wanting to replace a sword if you banged sword edges all day. But in a real combat situation, it wouldnt be wrong to do so.
@narutopain11 Older men can learn from younger men, just as younger men can learn from older men. Age must be humbled in the midst of ego lest a student miss an important lesson. However, in this video, I believe that Park Sensei is simply assuming the role of Uke in this demonstration, as the intent of this video is to teach viewers, not the participants.
@XxXBeastificationXxX But these are not bokken techniques, they are katana techniques. The point being, block with the side of the blade, not with the sharp, thin edge.
very logical, as the attacker swings with a downward force, the "block" is actually a way for you to deflect the downward force off to the left or the right after the swords come in contact, causing your opponent to become a little off balance, giving you more time to react to the situation. if you were to block with full force against the downward swing then your sword would definitely break.
This looks like someone who's seen the basics of kendo/iaido in a video and made the details up themselves.
The block is almost a kendo kaeshi waza, but you wouldnt block with the ha, EVER, you block with the mune.. and not the way he's doing. And the stance is more or less hanmi, but he's doing it wrong, and the "steps" are basic okuri ashi, but again looking realy weird and not something he's actualy worked into his system.
Is that a hand symbol on Greg's waist line? It looks like hand symbol called Wat & it means to obtain perfection like the balance of a perfect circle. The hand position appears to be over the Tan Tien & is believed to aid control of thoughts and emotions.. It is considered the physical center of gravity of the human body and is the seat of one's internal energy (qi) and the location where the body's chi or vital energy distributed throughout the organism.

Swords can break, but they arent that fickle. Done all kinds of destruction tests on them.

Shouldn't the older man be teaching instead of the younger guy? It's just rare to see something like this.

why would you block with the blade forward? A hard bladed sword like a katana would definitely chip, if not break.

@Himmelgren They where using bokken, not a hard blade katana. qeustion solved.
