This was a great game! I got it as a birthday present back in the day. I remember it had an unbeliveable, thick manual aswell. Too bad it's propably long gone... Gameplay was fun. You could drop the enemy with a single shot if you hit the pilot. Not being able to shoot the wings sucked, though.
I know at some point that Dynamix had two follow up projects in 1993 - 94 called
Aces : Desert Fighters and Aces : X-fighters .... I have a video demo of Aces : Desert Fighters somewhere on one of my old Dynamix Game CDs ... as a promotional upcoming game release ... I tried and tried and tried to find a working copy of the demo of either game over the internet hoping to find it in some underground site , and haven't founnd one yet ... I am still trying to find my Aces over Russia
I am a DIE HARD Dynamix Fan ... I first played Red Baron When it first came out ... played it for hundred of hours on my old 386 .. Then got Aces of the Pacific again hundreds of hours .. then came Aces over Europe .. God again hundreds of hours .. recently I purchased over 10 different versions of various Dynamix , RB , AOP and AOE ... Still have my old 486 and DOS system working .. and yes I fire it up ... did you guys ever try out the Modded AOE version of "Aces Over Russia " I have it !
I still keep a dos computer around to play all 3 games of this series. Although I think if you search the internet you can find dosbox versions of these games that will run on modern machines. Its hard to find non usb joysticks these days! For me these games have the perfect mix of realism and fun.
I have never been so mad to get a new computer, than when I got one that this game didnt work any more. My favorite thing was that you could actually keep up with a career and get promotions and medals and such. I dont think anyone has captured that since Dynamix
Thank you for this! I didn't even realize that this still existed as a memory, until that load screen popped up! So many memories, so many years ago ... damn.
will my ATI Radeon 5700 be able to run this at low spec? i just picked it up at gamestop the guy there said its kind of performance extensive.. PLEASE RESPONFD!!!
The best flight sim of all time. An absolute perfect blend of realism and arcade, further amplified by the adjustable realism factors. ALL GAMES SHOULD HAVE ADJUSTABLE SETTINGS!
I don't think I would have been able to keep my sanity in college without this game.
Sweet !!! I played the heck out of AoP and AoE back in the day on my 486/SX-33, and then on the incredible new Pentium 60 LOL . Great game, especially the movie-making feature.
This one of my all time favorite game! AMAZING on that time! I wish to have the same game today but just modern graphics/audio, will be fantastic... sadly they don't do more games like this anymore... :(
Oh damn, after playing Heroes of the 357th to death on our 286, I played THIS to death when we got the 486. Good times. :D And then later on on new machines Jane's WWII fighters, and eventually WWIIOL and the IL-2 Series. <3
AOE was the most memorable for me though, I just loved the way Dynamix did flight sims. Red Baron was a blast too.
Wie hast du das Spiel nur zum laufen gekriegt? Ich bin begeistert. Bei mir klappts nicht angeblich zu wenig Speicherplatz (was natürlich nicht stimmt aber angeblich ein großes Problem vom Spiel sein soll).
The original box art had an Arado AD-234 jet bomber attacking the Ludendorff Bridge at Remegen. We got an angry letter from the mayor of Remegen, saying that if we continued using "his bridge" on our product, he would sue. We redid the box art for the European release.
@a0e0roberts You were with Dynamix? Wow, thanks for Red Baron and fond memories of my childhood, spending hours hunting Zeppelins over a pixelized Paris!
Sadly, I never got Aces Over Europe to work on my new Pentium 133, for some reason. I still have the box and diskettes.
@SIG551P Sorry. I still get messages at a0e0roberts, but can't seem to send.
Flying over Paris? Did you ever fly down low enough to see the Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower? All the testers wanted to be able to fly through the Arc, but the programmers told us to stop mucking around and get back to work.
There was a bug in the program that would have Axis trains running on Allied territory and vice versa. Nobody would notice unless you were sent on a bombing mission into friendly territory.
@ImperialistRunningDo I do remember the Eiffel Tower, that's when I realized I was in France, because at the time, my knowledge of geography was somewhat limited.
I also spotted some trains when over the city, I had no idea you could attack them! Now I need to fire up the old 486 and test it out LOL. Problem is, the old PC is with my folks back in Poland, I'm in Canada now. Will have to plan a trip back home this summer, haha.
@SIG551P I STILL have fond memories of Red Baron. I would have to spend hours and HOURS testing the program before it shipped. There was a sigh of relief when the announcement was made that it was out the door.
My bus wasn't going to leave for 45 minutes, so I just sat at my desk running the sim. Damon Slye came by and said "Alan, didn't you hear? It's shipped."
@ImperialistRunningDo Well your efforts paid off, because it is now an integral part of the memory my relatively happy childhood!
This game and Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon. The days of DOS my super high-end 486x PC and the powerful new cursor-based Windows interface! The good old days.
Despite the explosion in processing power and complexity, games these days no longer have the charm they once had... Am I getting old?
@ImperialistRunningDo Oh forgot to ask, did you guys encounter problems with Aces Over Europe and Windows 95? I could not figure out how to get the game to run.
The furthest I got was to have the intro play, and then my hopes were shattered when it froze... :(
But the really good booklet that came with the box provided for days of reading about the history of World War 2 and the aircraft involved. The team that published that did a superb job as well!
With Freedos, a FAT32 partition, and a VERY cheap CMI 8738 PCI sound card, which has -REAL- DOS drivers, and with Moslo to slow your computer down, you can play it like i do on my core2duo :-)
With the FW190F or with Mosquito because these carry big bombloads. And it was futile to shoot the large ships with guns, it absolutely not damaged them. I flew over them from their tail, on max speed, and dive-bombed. :) And else, i set autopilot target to a point NEAR the target and navigated there manually, this trick helped to avoid tze rendezvous with the enemy fighters. :D
IFF was a pain in these games. I restarted many missions after accidentally hitting my wingmen for flying towards me in a dogfight. That or I'd be chasing the wrong plane.
Greate game. Both Aces over Europe and Aces over Pacific. Is the source code available? It is a game worth recompiling for win32, raising its resolution. Since it is a 3D sim, it would no be that hard...
what sound driver did you use for the game? I tried one of the drivers and it made everything... musical, and the other sound driver on my list didn't want to work for me. :\
Luftwaffe I see you know how to fly cool. Good vid gameplay.
