maybe this'll help you understand: in a used bookstore, i came across a 1950 national geographic "year in revue". in it, there was an obituary for the nation of tibet. cause of death, invasion by mao' pla. the article said there were 3 reasons:

1. location: tibet serves as a strategic buffer zone; better to control that zone

2. land and resources: mao said tibet could accommodate 100million han chinese

3. pride: china suffered horribly under euro onslaught/opium war. this was "vindication".
