I love any movie with hot girls that kick ass (at least semi believably). This looks pretty good. Watch Chocolate with Jeeja Yanin she does all her own stunts too. Amazing.
@gilgamesh310 Haywire is an American film sir, that is why I critique it based off other American films. Hong Kong films (and I've seen many sir, big fan) are in a different genre altogether and it wouldn't be fair for me to critique an American film based off a Chinese standard. Which is why I gave this film such high praise, because it went to that level rather than demeaning it's American audience with poorly filmed action.
I really wanted to walk out the theater seriously, I don't want to tell you not to go see it, I am just giving my opinion. I am very disappointed, but I still love Gina, she is badass, sexy, but Director really mess it up here, oh and the end was like WTF! I will give haywire a 3 out 10, sorry
First I would like to say that " I love Gina Carano" I really wanted to like n love this movie cause You see the trailer and you think to yourself this look like a badass movie! But see it today without reading any reviews from the net, I got to say that the movie was really boring from beginning to end, this has to be the directors fault. They kept playing the same tune or soundtrack through the whole movie, wtf! the fight scene were good, but felt short as the sound was weak in all scene!
@DENISPAVONZ1973 I think Chris just said in his review it's not quick cut to satisfy the ADD people. The movie requires you to pay attention. Geez the MTV generation really disappoints me.
Lack of score is not weak sound... on the contrary it's very strong sound. Foley, sound design, and ADR go into sound... leaving the music out is meant to make you feel like you are there and even make you relate to how alert she is.
It seems like a female take on the Bourne movies. I want to see it. My favourite Soderbergh-movies are Traffic and Ocean's 11, to cover both drama and action-comedy cathegory. (It's very hard comparing apples to pears...)
I don't believe Wonder Woman necessarily needs to be played by a white woman. My personal choice for that role would be Rosario Dawson. She's gorgeous, intense and statuesque and can play tough, strong women (Sin City comes to mind).
"You've never seen fight scenes portrayed like this"
Chris, it's better if you specify the angle you are coming from which is mainly from a Hollywood POV. Saying that the fights are completely different than anything ever is not true as they remind me of quality typically only seen in HK movies. HK action film makers have a high quality that Hollywood can't compare to. Make an effort to see more HK action films than just the few you have as there is much accomplishment that you aren't aware of.
@DaRunningMan I think that's what he means. I too am a big HK fan. And a Fight Choreographer myself. Haywire does not compete with HK action.
However this is easily one of the best fight scenes made in the US and it is slightly unique. For one not many fight scenes have no music and this is one of the few to actually make MMA look good since the style is so visually awkward when people start wrapping their legs around ppl's heads. Lastly it's hard to get a female to pull it off. Gina did great!
Well, I can tell you my least favorite was Contagion, @ChrisStuckmann . For some reason, that film to me wasn't suspenseful whatsoever, and its script was sub-par. Overall, my favorite is Ocean's 11 or Traffic, both excellent movies.
@ChristStuckmann As long as there's enough action in the film, I am SOOOO PUMPED for this film.
I just hope that Gina is good enough as an actress where she's tolerable.
And yes Chris, I've always said this since she was Crush on American Gladiators, and that is she SHOULD be and MUST be Wonder WOman in, hopefully, an upcoming adaptation.
I was very surprised to hear you say it would be in your top 15 of 2011 if it came out that year considering how great of a year for film last year was. I am going to take a guess that this will be your favorite film of 2012 up until The Avengers or Dark Knight Rises. Great review!
another awesome review gotta take ya hat off to Chris's attention to detail towards the movie as a whole package and the time and dedication he puts into his reviews - keep up the good work :)
My favorite Soderberg film is 'The Limey'...I also liked 'Bubble'. However, when he has a big budget and dozens of Hollywood stars in his films I find him a little disappointing and boring. Going to see 'Haywire' this week so hoping I like it.
Ooh now I'm even more pumped... I was a bit wary of the January slating of this; but I can't see how it can go wrong with ralent like that. Fave Soderbergh flick is hard - maybe The Limey.
Perfectly explained review Chris :) I really hope Gina Carano becomes one of the great action stars for this generation. Because she can legit fight, and Hollywood needs more females stars like that for these type movies.
hey chris..hope you see this, I've been subscribed in your channel for a while now, but I never really found out what is your exact movie rating system, if you have one. Is A the best? Is E the worse? Is there any A+? thx
I'm glad you voiced my issue with american action films these days. Which is why I hated the Warrior. Too much shaky cam and quick cut editing rather than showing us what these people are really capable of unlike the brilliance of Asian Cinema.
I've seen so many Hong Kong films that inspired me as a fight choreographer and I've been waiting for an American film to finally take martial arts films seriously and take the time and effort to actually put together solid fight scenes we can appreciate
My favourite is "Informant!" ..probably my favourite comedy of the 2000's (maaaybe behind Tropic Thunder)...Matt Damon is brilliant in it and i just found it to be completely hilarious..and it looks beautiful too
Good to hear this review. The trailer really didn't impress me all that much. It made the movie seem like just another formulaic action, revenge quest thingie - but we are supposed to like it because it has a female lead.
It's a tie between Solaris and Traffic. While I found Haywire to be a few steps above the normal action film, the story was still a tad bit too simplistic for its own good. I really enjoyed your review Chris. Keep up the excellent work.
Awesome! When I saw clips and a poster for this, I didn't expect it to be much. I was disappointed with the possibility of it being bad because the lead character is female, and I always hope that films with female leads, especially strong ones, will be good. But now that I've seen this, I'm DEFINATELY going to see it. :D
No, Wonder Woman has to be Bridget Regan. Her show (Legend of the Seeker) while pretty bad is one long audition tape for the Amazon Princess. Sadly this will probably never happen.
I have no doubt the acting will be good. My doubt is Gina Carano. Female action stars haven't been up to Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton heights. She better not piss me off. I BETTER be Sly Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, JCVD, Arnold Schwarzennager, Jet Li impressed.
Hey Chris, could you do a review of Kidnapped, the English dubbed Spain survival movie. If you havn't seen it...you have to. I know you love great cinematography...and Kidnapped had the best in any movie I've ever seen. It's dark,it's gloomy, and it uses less than...about ten shots in the entire movie. Glad you enjoyed, for me, judging by the trailer, "Haywire" looked like one of those average action movie that won't do as well as others. I may consider rent this one.
