This is also a pet peeve for my daughter (8) and myself. It takes less than 30 seconds for the other person to yield. Teaching your children early in life not to be rude is a good thing (sorry Martha). If for no other reason think safety.
one problem with lane courtesy as a pet peeve - if you're a league bowler doing practice bowling around people just having a good time, telling them about 'lane courtesy' and having a fit about their 8 year old kid running up during your approach makes you a douche.
