Here's my musical sandwich: Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Night on Bald Mountain, Sibelius Second Symphony 4th Movement, and then Moonlight Sonata again. Try it everyone. It's beautiful.
When I was 15, I played this in my youth orchestra. Its an incredible work, but again our band was for those aged 14-18 with a minimum grade standard of 6. Surely they could do something more a little more challenging at the proms?
@acl1022 Challenge is a matter of autonomy. This is incredibly challenging to perform if you have the personal and group standards for it. \Really, that comment is a bit of a slap in Sibelius' face.
@freekydeekydutchVI well said. I really wonder if that youth orchestra he is talking about really was able to play the music (probably only the notes at most)

the movement of this orchestra is amazing, and it really helps them play. i play bass and i get so into the pieces, even with a 6 and a half inch instrument in my hands, im swayin, swingin, kinda makin an ass of myself, but i feel the music, which is what classical music needs to be outstanding
Fantastic performance...apart from all the waving around when they play in the woodwind. I know they're "getting into it" but it's so irritating to see them doing snake-charmer impressions while playing. Amazing playing though!
I played this song my junior year of high school with the South Carolina 2009 All-State Orchestra at Lander University and Dean Angeles was our conductor and it is probably the best orchestra I'll EVER play with and we made him cry when we got to the point of 5:15 and he went off the podium during rehearsal and was out there for about 5 minutes. It was so amazing. I'll never forget that monent.

8 is standard for an orchestra of this size and a work of this kind, and in one wide shot 8 basses is what i saw. I was a bass player and have played this work several times
replaying 6:00 over and over and over again. AMAZING!

Whoa Woodwinds, settle down its not a dance competition, you are awesome, everyone notices you that's enough.

@emdb1981 Hah, it seems to be that one clarinet player who's the most carried away, complete with finger splays between fingered notes.

Does anybody know if the melody starting from 1:00 in this piece is a quote of anything. It sounds somehow familiar to me.

@acl1022 you're a fool. This music wasn't written for some youth orchestra in the first place. It's music right from the heart of the composer.
Most annoying comment which makes many who reads this wonder if you really know what music is about.

um...some of the musicians look like theyre in their 40's or 50's. Like the principal trombone with the wrinkles and the balding head?

"basically for a youth orchestra"? Nonsense. This is a superb performance, even some professional orchestras would play that worse!
