I think I've worked out what the vision means. MAJOR FRIGGIN' SPOILERS!!!!

Anyone who's played ME2 knows that the Collectors were once the Protheans. I think that this vision shows the Prothean's transformation and the horrible experiments performed as their bodies became filled with cybernetics.
