cont'd: I believe it is more important to understand that many coahces have used it successfully and many students have benefited from doing so. I would like to add that there are actually a few versions of the technique. Fred's uses and actual throwing technique. Others use a technique much more like a Hammer Throwers action which is ironically much more of a swingers version. Anyway, great video, like your work, keep it up, EA Tischler eagolfpro on youtube.
Shawn, my long time inner game coach Fred Shoemaker has used this drill for decades. I began working with him in 1984 and as far as I know he had already been using the throwing the club drill at that point. He wrote about it in his book Extraordinary Golf. I am sure others have used it for a long time as well. Greg McHatton uses it, however I am unsure for how long. I guess people will like to argue who did it first, however I feel that is unimportant.
Shawn- The teacher's name was Fred Shoemaker ( club thrower). He used to do clinics at a club I worked at. Super nice guy, just don't be down range during one of his clinics !!!!
Thanks Shawn. I went back and reviewed the "feet together - updated " video. So many instructors preach keeping the head from moving up and down so as to return the club back to the ball correctly. This has always been confusing to me. Are they just incorrect ? Thanks again for all the good advice. Really looking forward now to the 2011 season !
@mckyj BEWARE OF THE FEAR MONGERS...OOOOOOOO! LOL!
This way of swinging is way, way more accurate for contact because it is done in conjunction to LISTENING TO GRAVITY. If you fight gravity by keeping your body rigid to prevent knees from extending and heads from bobbing up and down, then you are asking for worse! Plug yourself into the force man!! I show my students everyday how to hit the head off a pin! Compared to that, the ball is huge! Shawn
Shawn: Thanks a million for another great video. Is the idea in the backswing to do this to avoid snathing the club inside? And also to, as you say, give the club freely to gravity? I tried this, hitting shots, and it felt like I was swinging straight back and through (even though I was turning fully) and got ridiculous club head speed and a mild draw. This video may be very underrated - it's a gem!
@ocdave99 You are very welcome and I am happy that you were able to tap into your awareness of what it did for your swing; this is exactly the purpose of these videos and to anyone reading this; thank you for the comment as it will help others! Shawn
Shawn: Thanks for all the great videos ! In this video (especially evident in the slow motion toss of the club), your head moves up on the back swing and down on the forward swing. Is this much head movement OK ?
@mckyj You bet ya!! This is the way humans interact with gravity; it is the most precise way to move in the golf swing as well as the most powerful way to move; Jack, Tiger Kenny Perry, Moe Norman, Ben Hogan in the downswing and so many more do this; please see "#1 most popular teacher on YT; feet together", "#1 most popular teacher on yt; speed and Power" and "#1 Most popular teacher on YT; horse shoes" and you will get why in detail!!
Hi Shawn, just to express all my gratitude for the immense talent you share with all of us.....Joyeux Noel et une Année 2011 riche en satisfactions personnelles.
@flopyhats I don't think so; the brain would overload with this short circuit! Too dangerous as well; You can use your imagination and see what happens though! Shawn
@jms546 Thanks jms546! You were saying that he dedicated a full chapter in his book on this throwing of the club on our forum; much appreciate the input! I would have to say that this book would be worth getting for those who are or were on the fence! :) Shawn
i was wonder could you tell me if i need stiff shaft or not im using i15 irons but i keep on blooning them in the air i just wondering is it because to soft shaft and i am loosing distance but a couple of months ago i was hitting a 9 iron 150 yard but now only 130 yards help
@kingofrs125 This is a very common issue and one that I just resolved again with pokerlife123; we talk a lot about this on our forum too and I would recommend you come for a visit! The release of energy in the arms and hands past impact and through the ball are so important to ALLOW TO HAPPEN; see "golf pro lesson feel and let the hammer through", "golf pro lesson get some snap in your swing", and the videos I recommended for pokerlife123 ; then see the forum!! Shawn
Hey Shawn, always nice to see you make complicate things easy. Hope I can try it soon and get feedback. Fred Showmaker has mentioned the club throwing drill in his book "Extraordinary Golf". Seems he is not the only one... Greetings from Germany, Frank
Nice job, as usual. But I am not sure about how the title applies to the content. I thought the tomahawk was used like a hand axe or a hammer. What am I missing?
@honketyhank Here it is on wikipedia: "Tomahawks are also a category within competitive knife throwing"; when you see pictures of them you will see that they were perfect for throwing! You can just see how they would feel too coming out of your hands after a nice whip :) Awesome pieces! Shawn
@pokerlife123 No; not at all normal! If you feel the need to do this, your club face-grip relationship is probably too open dynamically; please see "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip" as well as "golf pro lesson strike it pure" part 1 and 2; Good question and thanks for that; others will definitely benefit; you should post this one on our forum too! :) Shawn
@clemshaw Shawn that's crazy! Watched strike it pure videos of yours like you said and wow.
Out of nowhere Ive been struggling with my weight shit , getting back to my left side with the longer clubs. I guess i have got lazy with my grip these last 2 weeks because i checked it after the video and it was weak.. Adjusted it to a stronger grip and like magic there is no more weight shift problems! Amazing how the grip can effect so much!
I use a 5lb medicine ball (the soft sand filled ones) to do the same thing. The sand filled balls do not roll. This is also a great way to warm up before a round.
shawn, aldo's here, just to say love yout vid and the way you swing the golf club, can yo see guys, that the three balls shawn hits rolls at the same place, that means he hit the three balls the same place at the net, Shawn you're the best, bye teacher
Hey shawn great vid. I was wondering if this drill can be done with a ball or something similar with the same effect? I only ask coz I hanvnt got the facility to throw my clubs. Also, the golf channel need to get a grip! I'm at a loss for words that u didn't get the gig!
@davidjbricey Thanks David! Yes, have a look at my " golf pro lesson medicine ball drill" video; perfect for practicing the backswing toss and not bad for the follow through either; the only thing you won't get in the follow through is the release of the hinge and the snap action to target; but you will feel the weight shift and body get out of the way; Shawn
Shame on the Golf Channel for not chosing you. This vid has been up for 2 hours and already 70 people have watched it. Now that says alot about your style my friend. Great vid Shawn. Thanks for your passion of golf.
Super channel. We are just starting out and would LOVE to have you either become our friend or maybe also be a subscriber.

Shawn, you are confused with the tennis pro, John McEnroe. He would throw his racket. We golfers have MUCH more control over our tempers.

Hi Shawn, Jackie Burke said he used to practice throwing the club like this back in the day, heard that on the secret in the dirt website.

Hi Shawn , Great video as always ! I have a question that may relate to this concept im not positive.
When im playing golf and hitting a shot with my longer irons such as the 3,4, and 5 it feels like i have to release the club sooner. Is this normal?
