The head contact rule is there to prevent broken necks and severe head trauma. The checking player has the obligation to make checks that do not violate the rule. If they misjudge and make head contact,they have still violated the rule.

Most veterans like Maltby and Chelios wine when ever a young guy hits them cause they think they should have the respect. It's what you get for playing with your head down, and therefore you probably learn your lesson. GREAT HIT!
I'm impressed with the Carolina broadcast team. They didn't get all stupid and douchey like a lot of tandems do in this situation. The hit was as clean as could be according to the rules currently in place. If the NHL wants to regulate hits to the head then by all means...change the rules. The hit was brutal, but not illegal. Sutter needs to keep his head up and not stick it out there to be taken off by a defensive play. Weight played the body, but the position that Sutter took while reaching for the puck placed his head and shoulders in Weight's path.
Maybe not he'll keep his head up and realize he's playing hockey and he's not a ballerina...
One of the first things you learn in Pee-Wee hockey is keep your head up. I was caught with my head down and guess what? I learned to keep it up after having my bell rung...

Forget legal or not....the Sutter looked at Weight, and made a bad choice in trying to advance the puck by lowering his head and reaching for the puck to dump it in.
Weight did not hit Sutter high, Sutter lowered his head.
I hope Sutter recovered fully, but honestly people, Sutter knows better. He took a risk trying to beat Weight, and it failed.

-Brandon Sutter didnt mean to lower his head for the .2 seconds when he got hit. its not sutters fault and its not weights fault.

its hockey, obviously a big forward such as Weight will be looking for the hit, Do you know who Weight is? He is a very respectable player. He doesn't look to hurt people that is just stupid. This hit is as clean as it gets. Weight lowers his should and puts it under Sutter's chin. Yeah the hit was high and above the shoulders, but you're aloud to hit someone to the head with your shoulder. That is NOT penalty, and I'm not saying Sutter as a player and person deserves this, but any player playing with their head down deserves a good hit like this. It's what you get for playing with your head down, and therefore you probably learn your lesson. GREAT HIT!

I'm impressed with the Carolina broadcast team. They didn't get all stupid and douchey like a lot of tandems do in this situation. The hit was as clean as could be according to the rules currently in place. If the NHL wants to regulate hits to the head then by all means...change the rules. You mighty not like this hit but when held up to the rules in place today this hit was PERFECT.

I don't know... I'm pretty sure Dougy tried his best to keep his body low. Sutter was crouched way down. It's a tragic result. But you either have to have a no hitting rule or you have to let this stuff happen. You can't penalize someone because the other guy bends way over before getting hit. God bless Sutter, though-- what a great kid.

it clearly wasnt weight's fault cuz sutter had his head down. Yea maybe weight could have avoided the hit but im sure sutter knew he was comming at him and was just trying to race to the puck cuz had he made it by he would have been on a breakaway. Also its the players responsibility to be aware of the puck, sticks and other players. Now if people think that you should hit a person who has their head down, every skater will be skating with their heads down.

The hit was brutal, but not illegal. Sutter needs to keep his head up and not stick it out there to be taken off by a defensive play. Weight played the body, but the position that Sutter took while reaching for the puck placed his head and shoulders in Weight's path.

One of the first things you learn in Pee-Wee hockey is keep your head up. I was caught with my head down and guess what? I learned to keep it up after having my bell rung...

Weight teed the kid up, ignored the puk completely, saw he had a blind side shot on him and he targeted his head and destroyed him with a brutal cheap shot. Kostopoulos was preparing a shoulder to shoulder hit and Van Ryn tried to fake him out, turned away from the hit and got hurt because he screwed up.
